Just awesome! Impeccable writing? Check. Humour? Check. Good plot with everything coming together at the end even though not always in the favour of the characters? Check.I like how there is nothing that makes you think: "Hey! That couldn't happen to Y because then X would just swoop in and do this or that." You know what I mean?Instead everything that is laid out at the beginning fits with everything else in the end, like: "No, X had to go to that other place in order to that thing that let to the incident that shaped the circumstances for Y. Making it completely natural that Y gets out of a certain predicament with the help of this and that". This is not a weird retelling of events from the book. I am just trying to explain myself and doing a horrible job at it. :S :PSome spoilers ahoy!In addition to being awesome, this book also tries to teach us/kids that people are usually bad for a reason and that they can be good if given the chance, and it does a wonderful job of it, if somewhat sad. I never thought I would cheer for Snotlout. And feel so sorry for him. And MISS him, even.I can really recommend this book, along with all the others in the series, of course.

This series of books has been a hit with my 6 year old grandson (and me). We are working our way through the entire collection about the boyhood of the famous Viking Hiccup and his friends and dragons. Vivid characters, sometimes crude and a little violent, the stories are creative, suspenseful and exciting. Although they are stand alone stories with flashbacks and background, it is far more fun to start with Book 1 and work your way through the series. Even the drawings done by the author are terrific. Yes Vikings can be ugly and it beats the beautified and sanitized version of books one and two Disney did. Hats off toe Cowell.

My 10 year old son and I LOVE this series! I can honestly say that in all my years of reading and reviewing hundreds of books, this series is in my all time favorites. Rarely do I come across adult books, that even begin to compare to character development and story lines that these books do! Cressida Cowell, I know that you are writting the last book in the series right now, but please come out with more book quickly! I live for the days when your books are released and I am so sad once I am done, knowing I will have to wait to experience such splendor again.

Great price for a great series! Looked around and couldn't say no to this great deal. Just know this is a paperback box set of books 1-9 and there are 3 more books after. (The last coming out end of 2015) Bought for a 10 year old, but my husband and I have been reading it and enjoying the story. Easy fun adventure read. One of the must have series for us on the shelf next to Redwall & Narnia.

I am not very happy that lately a few of my packages have been arriving later than I was told they would come but I am glad to have this book all the same.I'm only ready the first few chapters and already that has me hooked for more. It makes me sad to know there is only one last book left before the series comes to an end but I am happy to have been through the ride and discovering such a fun and heartwarming book series. If it weren't for these books we wouldn't even have the fantastic film series DreamWorks has been making so thanks to Cressdia Cowell (and Hiccup) for giving us the grand adventures both on paper and on the silver screen.

It is sometimes a challenge to find books for my son to read that are of interest to boys! He has read all the books and would read more if there were more. The books hold his interest and even give fun trivia information about the world of training dragons!

...but Cressida Cowell can do it! I have read and purchased every single one of her Dragon series books, including the imports and special titles not easily available in the United States, and I have loved them all! They just keep getting better and better, and that's not an easy task for an author. In fact, the very first book in the dragon series (How to Train Your Dragon) was my LEAST favorite! If you have read Cressida's other dragon books: look for more of your favorite characters, some really funny scenes with Fishlegs, Stoick the Vast, and Big-Boobied Bertha. You'll see some favorite old villains and get to accompany Hiccup on a journey to find "America." You'll meet some new characters and a frightening sea dragon (there is such an AWESOME picture of him on the front cover!!). You see Hiccup really grow up a lot in this story, and his true bravery shines through stronger than ever.If you have never read Cressida's books or only read a few: there is some crude humor here, farting jokes, booby jokes, so if that kind of thing offends you or your child, you might want to think twice. The sea dragon is described in scary detail, including its immense size and shooting poison from its mouth, so if you plan to read this to a youngster who might get nightmares, it might not be the best choice. And as always, I recommend reading her books in order, so start with the first one and read your way up to this one. But remember, out of all of her books, I found the first to be my least favorite, and I'm not really sure why that is.Last fact to know is that this is an import and it's paperback. I prefer buying her books in hardcover to add to my collection, but I couldn't wait for this one! Being an import, it contains some British slang and spelling that U.S. children might not understand at first, but nothing that would interfere with the story.I am an elementary school teacher and have read Cressida's stories aloud to my 2nd graders. If your child is too young to read this on his own, it will make a wonderful read aloud, too.

This book was written with a lot of insight into how one girl viewed her life as a Rabbi's daughter. The ups and downs of this position were shown with a lot of feeling. How the daughter rebelled, how her life turned out and how she dealt with it. She went from one fold of her religion to another. If I told you any more details, I might as well give away the entire story. I enjoyed this well-written story very much and would recommend it.

While I was eager to read this memoir, I was very disappointed in the language Reva Mann chose whenever she felt she needed to describe her sexual encounters. These sections not only turned me off, but also frequently disgusted me. On the other hand, Ms. Mann’s description of life, particularly marriage and the raising of children within the ultra orthodox Jewish community is accurate, so for those unfamiliar with both law and tradition, the book is quite informative. Her personal struggles with her rabbinic father, anxious mother, even more anxious husband, and her dear, disabled sister all indicate that anyone can face these life challenges, and not solely due to the demands and expectations placed upon members of the ultra orthodox Jewish community. One can find sympathy for the author , but establishing the respect she desperately sought was difficult for me to find due to her shocking sexual descriptions; these were so unnecessary in her effort to drive home her point.

I honestly wish I hadn't read it, but I kept waiting for the author to go to a therapist and realize that she was as self-involved as her parents. That never happened. Instead at each stage she thinks she has her life all figured out and then, oops, she doesn't. I get that it's hard to figure out life and that it's hard being raised by emotionally unavailable parents. Her self-analysis was just grating to read about. You have problems? Go see a professional! The dedication was to a doctor. I hope he was a therapist.

I just finished reading The Rabbi's Daughter and I recommend it highly. I am Christian but have always been interested in learning about the Jewish religion. Reva Mann's story gave me such an intimate look into the religion and I am grateful. I felt the desire she had to be part of something and feel loved while at the same time feeling things were not quite right. The struggles she had with her family were so painful and I felt deeply for her. I was surprised at the negative reviews saying there was no closure with the book. That is life, most stories do not have perfect happy endings. But Ms. Mann grew so much during the book that I think there was closure because she was able to take from each of her lives and create a life that she felt good about. It took great strength to share her personal story so openly and I thank her for that.

I liked this book but there was a lot in it that shocked me. I am Jewish and found the parts about Hassidic customs to be fascinating. I just wondered what kind of mother Reva Mann was when she subjected her children to her sexual partner. The book was funny in spots, compelling in spots. I recommend this book. I think the author was a little too explicit.

Spoilers are included. This book is not memorable for it's literary style. The writing is mediocre. The story is one you hear more and more frequently, about life as a woman in the ultra Orthodox Jewish world. Most of them say pretty much the same things, and each tends to confirm the other's story. A woman's goal and value is in her ability to bear and raise children, and create a Torah home for her Torah student husband. The unfortunate representations of marital sexual relations do back up those nasty rumors that have been going around. Of course, all the Orthodox people who review the book say, "But that's not the way it is!" And maybe it isn't for everyone, but certainly often enough for it to be a common occurrence when people finally feel free to talk about it without having to make it pretty "for the goyim". (Non-Jews or, to the ultra Orthodox, Jews who are not ultra Orthodox) Also, as a memoir rather than a study of Judaism, remember that the impression of Judaism is the author's, and is not intended as a well rounded exploration of Judaism. It doesn't need to be; after all, it's a memoir. This concept seems to be difficult for some people to grasp.Unfortunately, I had almost no ability to relate to the author. She's unlikable. Her expectations are unreal, and therefore doomed to fail. I was particularly dismayed by her apparent lack of concern about the effects of her behavior on her children, when those effects were not going unnoticed by her. She is a person who is stimulated by extremes and novelty, so the likelihood that she is going to find deep satisfaction in a religion based on structured minutia is a predictable failure. Yes, she went to an extreme form of Judaism, but the more extreme the Judaism, the more regimented it is.Finally, I found it confusing. The Orthodox Judaism she describes her father practicing in England is not what I recognize as Orthodox Judaism in the USA. Too liberal for what I would have considered Orthodox, too conservative for what I'd understand as Conservative. Perhaps the era, or perhaps the categories are simply different. But the family observances seemed to conflict, which jarred me each time and made me unable to simply go along with the narrative.Very explicit descriptions of sex and drug use.In addition to "The Rabbi's Daughter", I have recently read "Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of my Hasidic Roots", also a memoir, and "Hush", a novel based on the experiences of a Hasidic woman. They tell similar stories of girls and women in restrictive ultra Orthodox Jewish communities. Of the three, however, I strongly recommend "Hush" by Eishes Chayil. Although a novel, it paints the clearest and most well balanced portrait of a society which has serious, dangerous flaws, but also beauty. The writing is brilliant, and the story emotionally stunning. Spend your time with the five stars instead of the three.

Very well written and compelling story of love, loss, and redemption set in Israel and London, England. The story has no heroes and villains; just good hearted people, and their family, trying to make sense of their lives.

Masterfully written, this autobiography is so raw in its honesty. A person, a young person, a girl who has to go through so much in order to find her real calling - it's heartbreaking.

I enjoyed this short biography and will be assigning it to my history students. It's an excellent detailed overview of two important colonial-era scientists who I had not heard of until recently. I'm glad to have discovered this and it has sparked my interest in reading a longer adult-length biography.

I read this book in a women's small group at church and found myself underlining sentences on each page. This is the kind of book that you want to read slowly because each chapter is filled with nuggets of truth. Stormie writes from the heart!

Very informative, gave me a different way of looking at situations

Wonderful way to incorporate a life story into the Bible. I understood because I also lived it! Thanks I needed this!!

Dance with Demons: The Life of Jerome Robbins, by Greg Lawrence

From Publishers Weekly

Choreographic and theatrical genius Jerome Robbins was born in 1918 in New York City into a materially comfortable but emotionally bleak Jewish immigrant family in New York City. Lawrence (who coauthored Gelsey Kirkland's Dancing on My Grave) points to this emotionally bereft childhood and paternal disapproval ("My son's a fag how can I talk to him?" was reportedly his father's attitude), as well as Robbins's struggles with his Jewish heritage, his sexuality and, most famously, his decision to name names before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in the 1950s, as the definitive aspects of Robbins's life and creative legacy. The sum total of Robbins's work as reported here is staggering; his decades at the heart of the golden ages of American ballet, musical theater, theater and film, as director or choreographer, often in collaboration with such giants as Leonard Bernstein and George Balanchine, left the American public a cultural gold mine. Lawrence interviewed hundreds of dancers, actors, directors, family members and other contemporaries all, whether they loved or hated him, recognized both Robbins's genius and his clearly tortured soul. Most of the remarks herein tell us far more about the speaker than about the subject, but as such, they form an indelible picture of the various eras during which Robbins worked (he was active almost until his death in 1998). Robbins himself made numerous attempts over the years to write his own autobiography, only to abandon them repeatedly when the emotional cost became too great. In the end, Lawrence's account, though comprehensive and lively, can only give us a solid picture of Robbins's times and contemporaries the man himself remains a mystery. Illus. not seen by PW. (May)Forecast: Readers in New York, the center of the ballet and theater worlds, will grab this much-touted book. First serial in Vanity Fair; forthcoming reviews in the New York Times by Janet Maslin, the New Republic, the Washington Post Book Review and Variety; an interview in New York Blade; and a May 1 spot on NPR's new show, Studio 360, will bring lots of attention.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Lawrence (coauthor with Gelsey Kirkland of Dancing on My Grave) tells the life story of legendary American choreographer Jerome Robbins from many different perspectives. Robbins is known for choreographing major Broadway musicals like West Side Story and The King and I and also many ballets. This biography is dominated by quotes from a variety of sources, including critics, dancers, family, and Robbins himself. Rita Moreno of West Side Story is quoted as saying, "What he did that was so unusual [was] that he choreographed for character. He choreographed the way a writer writes." Robbins's demons of the title include problems with his family, his sexual orientation, and his testimony to the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). The most interesting sections of this hefty tome concern his choreography and its creation, his collaboration with Leonard Bernstein and George Balanchine, and the artistic process. This first full-length biography of this important choreographer is recommended for all libraries. (Photos and index not seen.) Conrad's photographic biography is a good companion to Lawrence's work. Conrad, a screenwriter and longtime friend of Robbins, has combined photographs of Robbins's childhood, insider looks at rehearsals, and lovely photos of performances of his choreography with excerpts from his journals and brief biographical narrative. The result is a heartfelt tribute to a man she clearly loved who contributed much to his art. Recommended for public libraries with broad interest in dance. Jerome Robbins was a monster to many throughout his career. He was imperious, quick to take offense, both personally and politically treacherous (he turned on friends and lovers as easily as he turned on those whose left-wing sentiments he had once shared, naming names freely when he was called before the House Unamerican Activities Committee). But he was a brilliant choreographer and director; he introduced a modern-day American vernacular into ballet with "Fancy Free" and went on to create, direct, and/or choreograph such Broadway classics as "On the Town," "Peter Pan," "The King And I," The Pajama Game," "Bells Are Ringing", "West Side Story," "Gypsy." and "Fiddler on the Roof," among many others. He imposed a reign of terror on his productions, often (like David Merrick) playing creative principals off against each other, he hogged billing and created whole new ways of being credited (the "name in a box" thing was his idea), and generally left a trail of bodies wherever he went. In the case of "West Side Story" he re-orchestrated Leonard Bernstein's score while Bernstein removed himself to a bar and got quietly drunk -- and Bernstein was no shrinking violet. But people fought to work with him on virtually every project because he had the golden touch: in addition to the shows listed above, he transformed out-of-town dogs into hits, including "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and "Funny Girl." He was bisexual although he leaned toward homosexual, and the book is very good about his relationships, many of which ended in ruins; the one that endured, in off-again, on-again form for decades was with Montgomery Clift. One of the things I like best about this book is that Greg Lawrence neither demonizes nor whitewashes his subject, seeking instead to understand him. And I have to say that in the end we understand Robbins' bad behavior much more clearly than we understand where his astonishing talent came from.

An incredibly researched book. It is definitely a book only for those who are interested in the dance world. This book gives you many insights into the person of Jerome Robbins and makes you appreciate how complicated the human being is. There is no yes or no about the book; i.e. you don't finish it either loving Robbins or hating him but maybe, as all those who worked with him, respecting him.I, being, an old war horse from that period, an old dancer and an x-New Yorker, could really identify with what Lawrence talks about, including ballets, places and dancers. It gave me a tremendous amount of knowledge about the professional world of dance, the people involved and the difficulties of choosing such a lifestyle. More than anything, you can appreciate what a genius Robbins was in a world that is so full of talent and egos.

This book should have been edited to a substantially smaller volume. There was no need to itemize every career effort by Robbins, even the works that went nowhere. After about 300 pages, my interest waned and I started skimming. His upbringing, personality, demons and genius had been well established by this point. It wasn't necessary to have multiple people say essentially the same things over and over again, both positives and negatives. We got the picture. The chapter related to Robbins' relationship with Balanchine was held back until almost the end, this seemed to be a carrot to keep the reader hanging in there.

This was a very interesting book about a very interesting person. I've always been fascinated with Jerome Robbins and this book tells everything I wanted to know. He had such a wonderful life and was so talented as a dancer and choreographer, but sadly in many ways he never got over his personal demons. He had a very troubled relationship with his parents, especially with his father. He also spent most of his life trying to come to terms with his Jewish back ground. There was lots of detail to read through, but it was a book well worth reading.

Loved this book. Learned a lot about the world of Broadway and ballet theatre. Great gossipy read!

When I reviewed Christine Conrad's book on Jerome Robbins ("Jerome Robbins: That Broadway Man, That Ballet Man") I wrote that the book on Robbins had yet to appear. Well, that book is here.Greg Lawrence's fascinating DANCE WITH DEMONS is so painstakingly researched and so fair-minded, so interestingly written that it speeds along as if it were a novel, that it will, I believe, in years to come, be regarded as a very important document of life in the Theatre and the Ballet from the 1930's to the 1990's.None of Robbins' "psychological problems" are glossed over and none of his matchless successes as a classical choreographer and as a director and choreographer of Broadway mega-hits is given short shrift.Any reader with an interest in life in the New York City Ballet, under George Balanchine and then under Peter Martins, or in the Golden Age of Broadway's Musical Comedies, can afford to miss this book. Years and years of research obviously went into its writing. Just a very few examples of people quoted at length about Robbins, the artist, are his collaborators on WEST SIDE STORY (Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Prince), his collaborator and boss on THE KING AND I (Oscar Hammerstein,2), his dancers on Broadway (Yuriko, Robert La Fosse, Charlotte D'Amboise, Grover Dale, et al) and his dancers in the ballet world (Peter Martins, Suzanne Farrell, Bart Cook, Violette Verdy, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev, et al). We also get to read what the critics said about the various works when they premiered. What makes the book terrific reading is that time and time again, through the years, we read of no one who has anything negative to say about Robbins, the artist. And yet, over and over we read of peers being crushed, other artists being "named" in the HUAC hearings, friends and lovers being used and abused.Demons, indeed.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
