I went to school with Kevin Gale, and heard this story from his mouth when he returned. I read this book when it was first translated from the original Hebrew and loved it. Everything in this book is true, Kevin is an honorable person and doesn't tell tales. I was thrilled to see it's being made into a movie and my old school chum's story told to an even larger audience, as it is truly a tale for the ages, an adventure you won't want to miss!

Yossi is very candid in recounting the many poor choices he made during this adventure. Several times I wondered how he came out of the circumstances alive. However, I failed to identify with him strongly because his attitude about the rainforests seemed immature to me, almost like he was going on a Disney ride rather than being equipt for survival against animals, weather, and parasites unknown to him beforehand. He was similarly immature in his connections to others, putting trust in those he ought not have and failing to make solid connections to those he should have valued better. In the Epilogue he redeemed his character very much in my eyes. (SPOILERS) Having barely survived the jungle, he came away with a love for it as a whole ecosystem. He made rainforest conservation a focus in his life and initiated several conservation sites around the world.

"Jungle” is a captivating book for explorers not just of the physical world but also of the mind.I have a personal interest in Yossy's story since I have also planned to go through the Madidi jungle. I enlisted two friends who chickened out at the last minute. My inspiration was the "Mines of King Solomon”. But recently there was a book and a movie about a related theme which is about Percy Fawcett and his search of the city of Z. Percy crossed parts of Bolivia about 6 times 100 years ago. He disappeared in Brazil to never be found again, just like Yossy's friend Marcus. The difference between Percy and Yossi is that while both got enamored of the jungle, Percy only criticised the people who hired him and paid him with gold. Yossi, on the other hand, came back to Bolivia and tried to do something beneficial for the people he encountered. The book leaves one end open and that is the disappearance of his friend Marcus as well as the mystery of his guide Karl, whose story and background remains something that in time should be known since he lived in Bolivia for over 10 years.I saw the movie and it reflects the book, but it should have been done in Bolivia. It misses natural scenarios like the so called valley of the moon.Anyway, “Jungle" is worth reading and there is something to learn.

Yossi and his companions were all dreamers looking for adventure in the jungle. Being young, naive and trusting they set off on a journey with a total stranger believing that he was a good man and would take care of them. Their experiences on the river and in the jungle are difficult to imagine surviving. Only their powerful will to live allowed Yossi and Kevin to survive. While their story is amazing, reading the book was at times tedious. The first half of the book is just walking, walking, walking thru the jungle. Day after day. Yossi's account of his journey alone in the jungle is difficult to see thru my eyes. Immersing myself into the story beside the lead character is what keeps me reading. I see what they see and feel what they feel. That just didn't happen for me here. I don't know if it is the style of writing or that so many important little details were left out to keep the length of the book manageable. This is an amazing story of his will to live and overcome so many obstacles, both physical and emotional, that should have killed him.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get the real first hand account of their journey.

There is another good one. It must be a true story. About twenty years ago, during a trip to the Bolivian jungle, I met a guide named Lazaro, on the river Beni (rio Beni), that told me about it, he claimed that he was part of the rescue team at the time. He said the title of the book in Spanish was " Regresso del (rio) Tuichi. Initially, I couldn't find an original copy of the book, however, several years later, there it was; in English, on Amazon!!!

I bought this book after watching the movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it, although it's not particularly well-written. I wish it included a map to help the reader orient him or herself while trying to follow along. My mind always went back to the movie when I was lost.

Yossi definitely has more determination than I could have ever mustered in his situation. This true account will speak volumes to you about mind over body. What a survivor!!!!

I enjoyed reading the survival portion of the book once they found themselves in that predicament, but I guess I'm just not very adventurous. The history's they encountered seemed predictable. I can't imagine wandering off into the jungle with so little training, preparation, and protection. Also, depending on a guide based only on his word and an incomplete map seems foolish to me. I tip my hat to Yossi's tenacity and life accomplishments since his jungle adventures.

The nutritional content of baby food is much more important these days now that we know about the dangers of pesticides, etc. I got this book with the vague idea of maybe making organic baby food for my grandchildren when they are visiting, but now I am excited about the whole prospect and will be sharing the information with my daughter. I found the chapter on storing organic food especially helpful, and the penny trick is absolutely amazing! Living in a hurricane zone with frequent loss of power or threat of losing power is a common occurrence, I am surprised I haven't heard of the penny trick before now. I will definitely be utilizing the trick immediately.

I actually bought this book so I can make organic baby food for my friend who has a newborn. I love to garden and always have so many vegetables and fruits left over that sometimes they go bad. There are so many useful ideas in this book that I would have never thought of like using ice cube trays to freeze the food or using wax paper in the freezer. There are many tips and tricks offered for weaning babies too. My kids are older and they also enjoy many of the recipes found in this book such as the baked peaches and the broccoli and cheese nuggets. The book includes information about reading and understanding store bought baby food labels, food allergies and toddler finger foods.

With my first two babies, I was just too overwhelmed to try the idea of making my own baby food. It seemed like it would just be way too much work. After giving birth to my third though, I really want to give it a try. I have breastfed them all to try to give them the most natural options, so why not do the same with their first foods. This book provides the perfect overview for just starting out. I thought I would need all kinds of extra blending and storing devices, but this provided methods using things I already have in the house. The recipes at the end start with babies' first foods and go all the way to finger food options as the baby transitions into a toddler. Since my oldest has allergies, I wish I had read this when he was still a baby. I could have provided him with so many more options just by making them myself. This really does show how doable it can be and provides a lot of extra feeding tips that first time moms especially will appreciate!

I am beyond my child rearing years, but my adult son and step-children have babies so I like to see what is "new". Two of my grandchildren are ready for starting solid foods so I picked up this book. This book an excellent resource that is very thorough. It explains nutritional needs, how to know if the baby is ready for solids, food allergies, storing the food safely, and many healthy recipes. I have to admit, even as an adult, sound so appetizing! This book is a must have for any parent, grandparent, or caregiver of a baby or toddler.

This book is a good, basic guide to the idea of introducing your baby to solid food and is probably best for those who have little or no experience feeding a baby. I'd never heard of the "ice cube" method before and that will definitely be something I keep in mind when the DH and I do have a baby. Love that the author has a nod in there for the parents acknowledging weaning is hard on them too.

This is an interesting, informative book on how you can make organic baby food for your body. The book gives an overview of nutrition for babies and talks about nutrient requirements, food allergies, weaning, moving to solids, what foods to choose and recipes for organic baby foods. Examples of recipes in this book include Potatoes and Pumpkin with Apple Snack and Butternut Squash with Peas. This book also gives you info how to store organic food once you make it. Overall, I would recommend checking this book out for good info on feeding your child and making your own organic baby food.

Was looking for an informative book on feeding of babies and have found one with this well written book. We are preparing for the coming of our first great grandson and it has been a few years, since having to go through the baby thing. The author is very thorough with her presentation and breaks the subject down so that you can easily understand it. From the ounces per weight per day of formula needed, to how to freeze baby food properly. The use of the ice cube trays for freezing is a really good idea. This book would be wonderful for a new mother, offers some really good recipes for organic grown baby foods, such as chicken corn chowder to applesauce muffins for babies. It is great also for us older grandmothers and great grandmothers who have forgotten a lot.

I wish I hadn't wasted money on this book. There were typos and errors throughout and you can tell it's not based on actual research. It's like someone woke up one day and decided to write a book...and finished it before their baby's nap was over. Waste of time and money, unless you're looking for a good laugh.

Review

I cannot overstate the importance, timeliness, and helpfulness of this book. Ed has given us the wisdom that only comes from a heart shaped by the gospel and a deep compassion for people, generated by the love of Jesus. This is a must read and a must share. --Scotty Smith, Senior Pastor, Christ Community Church; author of The Reign of Grace and Objects of His AffectionAn all-too-rare combination of gospel understanding, biblical wisdom, personal empathy and long counseling experience shines through these pages. What is most needed is a course of divinely prescribed anti-depressants. Like a skilled spiritual pharmacist, Ed Welch fills that prescription for us. --Sinclair B. Ferguson, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, S.C.; theologian; author of The Christian Life"I have come to rely on Ed Welch and others at CCEF for guidance and insight in better understanding the issues of the soul that plague many people today. For those who want to address more than just the symptoms of depression, Ed's counsel is invaluable." --Bob Lepine, Co-Host, FamilyLife Today

The great preacher Charles Spurgeon often battled with bouts of depression. In deep ways he wrestled with a most heinous mental health issue which plagued him most of his life. In the midst of ministering to others he remarked that, "I have sometimes been the means in God’s hand of heling a man who suffered with a desponding spirit.  But the help I have rendered has cost me dearly.  Hours after, I have been myself depressed, and I have felt an inability to shake it off."He continues in another place;“I am the subject of depression so fearful that I hope none of you ever get to such extremes of wretchedness as I go to.  But I always get back again by this–I know that I trust Christ.  I have no reliance but in Him, and if He falls, I shall fall with Him.  But if He does not, I shall not.  Because He lives, I shall live also, and I spring to my legs again and fight with my depressions of spirit and get the victory through it.  And so may you do, and so you must, for there is no other way of escaping from it.”Depression, and it's wicked allies, are blind guides. Attaching themselves to the best of us with no regards to gender, education, social status, and leading us down paths we were never intended to travel. In my own battle with Depression, Anxiety, and a host of other issues, few things have helped me in the depths of my most desperate moments. From the moment I picked up, Depression: Looking Up from the Stubborn Darkness, I knew I had found a vital resource which would help me to dispel the fog and despair I currently face. Right from the outset I could tell that Ed Welch knew and understood depression unlike many I have read. In the midst of "pray harder" or "God must be punishing you" I found Welch to be a most comforting companion."Depressive speech is poetic. Prose does not capture the experience, so it is either poetry or silence. Depressed people are eloquent, even when they feel empty at their emotional core devoid of personhood."Welch seemed to understand me as an individual made in the image of God and not merely an autonomous person afflicted with a mental health disease. He knew that in the recesses of my darkened heart there lay a seed of hope even if he had to dig past the layers of decay which had been building up the past 33 years. He had a keen awareness of the way I viewed my existence. The only thing you know is that you are guilty, shameful, and worthless. It is not that you have made mistakes in your life or sinned or reaped futility. It is that you are a mistake; you are sin; you are futility.Ugh! My soul groans at the very reading of that quote but he's quite right. It's not that I have made mistakes in the past, though they are many, or that I have sinned, it's that I am the very embodiment of those things. I remember that I was once alive and vibrant chasing after God.Now, when I think of my status before the Almighty, pain floods in knowing that I am no longer so.I spend countless hours remembering the passion which once ran through my veins like fire. I remember that I was once enjoying a closeness with God that has now been severed, or seemingly so. I trust in the sovereignty of the triune God of the Bible who sits enthroned on the seat of heaven but I wrestle with questions of suffering and his goodness. I wrestle with the reason he chose to play things out in the way they have. What has helped most, in addition to the Scriptures, are the Confessions and Catechisms in which my doctrine finds adequate summary. I find in the Heidelberg Catechism a powerful remedy for the despair I face when walking through my darkest of days.Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death? A. That I am not my own, but belong - body and soul, in life and in death - to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. What a remarkable confession to utter when walking in the valley of the shadow of depression. The very utterance of them can make the faintest heart return with life. Surely there are days when I can barely concentrate or where the anxiety is worse than usual, but I remember that G, in his infinite wisdom, "knit me together and formed all my inward parts." (Psalm 139:13-14)Welch echoes the words of the confession in various places warming even the coldest soul. He comments that "Hope is risky" and quite rightly follows that up with an explanation why;"Underneath depression's veil of passivity is a heart that is busy making choices. Sometimes you prefer hopelessness. You want it. You aspire to it. Isn't that a reasonable way to explain why you are so immune to encouragement? You hear the words and understand them, but you don't want them. Even though self-pity and your attempts to kill hope are not working well, you are loyal to your hope-killing strategy."Can you see why Hope is risky? Hope is risky because it gives opportunity for failure. Hope can be dashed and trampled on the floor, that is, if hope lies on what is seen and what can be gained through our own efforts. We have a mediator in heaven who will never leave our hopes unfulfilled. Depression may be full of paradox at every turn and yet God works in ways we cannot understand this side of eternity. What works the best in the midst of relentless pain and suffering is a relentless love. "Depressed people, like all of us, are aware of kindness and love that is willing to sacrifice. Love always leaves its mark. As a result, depressed people who do best are cushioned by preserving love."We as Christians know of a relentless, pursuing, and preserving love. We have seen it in the face of a man bloodied and hanging on a cross. We have seen it in the very act of the Christ who stepped down from heaven, taking on our very nature, and yet was without sin. We see this love in a suffering servant who. though despised and rejected, bore our sicknesses and carried our pains. A man crushed because of our iniquities and pierced at the very act of our rebellion. Love has none great than that servant who laid his life down for his sheep. In the midst of your darkest pain, in the groaning of your most deepest suffering there is hope. Not merely a hope for right now but a hope which lasts into a glorious eternity with the author of that very hope. I will leave you here with the grace-soaked words which Welch himself concludes his most compelling volume yet;"Your own heart has much to say, but let Jesus have the final word. 'Grace' is the shorthand. In that one word, God takes us out of ourselves and turns our attention onto him, the One who showers forgiving love on us even when we don't realize all that he has forgiven. It is brimming with promises and guarantees....In your battle with the manifold features of depression, Grace to you."

This book is for Christians who know what it is like to “walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” At one time or another, that is all of us. While the book is grounded in Scripture, it is mindful of medical, psychological, and historical perspectives on depression. It does not discount any treatment approach, but it asserts that any method apart from deep spiritual soul-searching will fall short of the mark. It is a compassionate book, full of loving understanding and gentle exhortation.

Edward Welch is a gifted author and caring person. I've read his book on Anxiety and now this one on Depression. Note- if you or someone you know suffers from depression, you don't want to be reading this book in public. It will pull at your heart on every page and leave you sobbing (in a good way most of the time)!

I had this sitting in my Kindle for months before I finally decided to read it, partly because I just wasn't sure if I really wanted to read yet another book on depression. So glad I started reading it. It is by far one of the best and most practical books I have read on depression. There has already been a lot said about the book so I will only add that if you are struggling with depression or know someone who is this is a must read. Finally a book on depression that doesn't leave you feel hopeless and more depressed but offers hope and practical thoughts on how to walk through depression.

I'm encouraged after reading this book. After the death of my 26 year old son in 2013, discouragement has been unwanted visitor. I'm grateful for men wise in the scriptures to remind me of His sufficiency and love for me.

Very thorough and practical in the discussion of the symptoms of depression and the techniques to work through when it hits. Saturated with the Bible, but does NOT pigeonhole depression as only a spiritual-sin problem as (unfortunately) many pastors espouse from the pulpit. This book is a big help and I believe will be my go-to resource when I feel depression creeping up on me in the future.

Great book on depression from the Biblical Counseling perspective. It's open to secular methods and diagnoses but is strongly biblical. It's a breath of fresh air from the biblical counseling camp.

Presents hope and help for depression. Notes many causes and encourages us to look for clues to our cause and then helps us deal with each cause. Treats depression as pain and suffering and shows how the Bible teaches that suffering has a purpose and so does your depression.
