What Every Body Is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People, by Joe Navarro Marvin Karlins

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School—This book illustrates which nonverbal clues telegraph untrustworthiness and deception and which radiate sincerity and compassion. In this fascinating take on body language and the ability to decipher it for use in everyday life, Navarro emphasizes that while knowing the reasons for certain behaviors—like touching one's neck—can be useful in "reading" people, they are not foolproof barometers of deception. A former FBI agent who commonly used these techniques to help crack cases, the author cautions about jumping to conclusions and encourages using clusters of nonverbal patterns to help discover whether a person is lying or just under stress. One chapter is devoted to the brain and its limbic system, which controls those involuntary quirks of behavior. Black-and-white photos illustrate different points throughout. This book is a worthy research tool, and a good addition to larger collections.—Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. “A masterful work on nonverbal body language by an exceptional observer. Joe Navarro’s work has been field-tested in the crucible of law enforcement at the highest levels within the FBI. I cannot praise the book enough.” (--David Givens, Ph.D., author of Crime Signals and Love Signals)

I'm going to preface this review with the fact that I have Aspergers; So there's a few social skills I have a natural difficulty with. For me these include things like reading body language, eye contact, determining if something is literal or figurative, etc. While I do understand body language, It doesn't always come naturally to me - I might miss seemingly obvious things like someone doing the "Come here" motion with their hand, Someone needing me to get something for them that's behind me and pointing at it (but without verbally saying it), etc. A book like this is incredibly valuable to me, since it shows me what the body language looks like and what it means or may mean. Since I don't always recognize these things, even moreso than most people - This book is worth it's weight in gold to me.

Beyond useful in all walks of life. The only warning I have for people, beware the literal power this book possesses. If you read it a section at a time and then look for that item, you will start to see how much people actually lie in general conversation. If you are a people watcher, this book will provide insight light years beyond what you think you understand. It also can help people who are a bit socially ackward with feeling comfortable around people they do not know.

4.9 stars.A phenomenal book! I will now look at everybody in a different way, and try not to be creepy when I pay attention to their body language, haha.Seriously, though, this was fascinating. I originally read this book partly because I wanted more insight into writing the bodily gestures of my characters during dialogues, but of course, these tips are useful for my daily interactions with others too.One thing I realized for writing body language in fiction, is that even though we can see gestures in detail in real life, we may not necessarily describe these gestures with so much precision in our books: one, because readers might not understand what it means or they might even misunderstand; two, when we interpret someone’s facial expression, we may jump to the emotion without consciously processing what physical gestures expressed that emotion. So we’ d think: “her gaze turned wistful” rather than a detailed portrayal of her eyebrow, pupil, mouth, etc. movements.I really liked the general principle of spotting comfort versus discomfort behaviors, as this heuristic makes everything easier to understand. And I appreciate how honest Joe is in telling us that there is no sure-fire way to know if someone is lying or not. Real life is never that simple to figure out.The only reason why I took off 0.1 stars, was because I was led to believe by a certain paragraph in the book that we would see a chapter on people’s idiosyncratic, personal bodily gestures. So I was disappointed to find that I was mistaken.Still, this was a fabulous book! Highly recommended!

Each of us, instinctively, look at the faces of people with which we converse. We also take a generalized wide field view of their body language. We decide friend or foe rather quickly, displeased or happy, the very general view of who we are encountering. We OBSERVE things like people rubbing their sweaty palms on their thighs or tapping their toes, or licking their lips, but those we just "see" without thinking about. After reading this book you will notice stuff like that and see if it applies, which means you are thinking which means you paid attention to the book. You will quickly identify every one of the "tells" in the book, in yourself and others, but now you will think about what you see.

The impact this book has had a dramatic impact on the way I view human interactions. Before reading this book, I scarcely understood body language and non-verbal communication; now, thanks to this brilliant work by Joe Navarro and Marvin Karlins, I understand why some people seem more confident than others when they speak, how adopting different techniques can allow one to become more persuasive when speaking, what to look for when attempting to detect deception, etc. This book is more than a just a work of non-fiction: it is a guide to help you understand how non-verbal communication effects human interactions. Thanks to this book, I've begun using some of the techniques the authors recommend to become more self-assured in communicating effectively and convincingly; this book as also given me the tools necessary to gauge what another person's thoughts are when I'm communicating with them, as a great deal of human interaction depends on understanding others through their body language. I will be referring back to this book many times in the future, as the wealth of knowledge that is explicated throughout this work is so valuable that it necessitates consistent review and contemplation. Plus, the book is written a way that makes it immediately accessible even to those who do little reading, so I won't have to worry about becoming confused by vague language when referring back to a specific page or technique. I loved reading this book, and I find myself continuously enjoying it whenever I refer back to it to help clarify any uncertainty I may have after interacting with another person. Whether you want to better understand what your significant other is thinking or feeling, what to do to come across as more friendly and inviting to strangers, or simply improve your non-verbal intelligence, this book will surely help you do all of that and more.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my son who is feeding is newer interest in psychology and counseling. My wife and I started reading it before we wrapped it up for him and enjoyed it, though we only spent about a half an hour with it. The content reminded me of how the TV series "Lie to Me" might have started. The book is very straight forward, making it an easy read. The author doesn't waste any words and gives straight content without any fluff throughout. There are many black and white photos to supplement each section of the book's content. This would make a good read for anybody with an entry level curiosity for this subject matter.

The book is decent, but the author demonstrates a certain naivety in many of the suggestions he makes, indicating that they're backed by significant research that just hasn't determined cause and effect.Notably, he states that all of the "other" diets out there (note that he implies this book is not a diet, but it is - any method of eating is a diet) ultimately work by creating a calorie deficit as if to imply that by following this book, you can lose weight without a deficit - but thermodynamics would disagree. Do certain foods provide equivalent satiety to other foods but for lower calories? Yes, there's research behind that. But the author repeatedly states that cutting calories and creating a deficit isn't the right way to lose weight as it can hurt performance, and yet the *only* way to lose weight is via a calorie deficit. There is literally no other way. There are additional points of information that are only correlation (e.g. those who eat breakfast are leaner than those who don't - and those people also exercise more, smoke less, and a host of other factors that make them healthier) and further statements that are generally debunked, particularly nutrient timing around whether it's best to eat carbs, proteins, or fats at different times of day (he says carbs in the morning, protein at night, but there aren't studies that he references or that I've found that actually prove causation here). Note that I'm not talking about post-workout nutrition which has been studied extensively and for which there is support for carb and protein consumption immediately post workout to maximize both glycogenesis and protein synthesis. The author also states that if you eat carbs late at night, they are "more likely to turn to fat" which has been proven patently false over and over again (I'm tired of reading and hearing this). De novo lipogenesis (the conversion of carbohydrate to triglycerides) is jokingly low (a few grams a day) except in cases of extreme carbohydrate overfeeding. Carbohydrate is burned in preference to fats when present which thus, in a caloric surplus, will cause overall adiposity to increase, but carbs themselves are very rarely converted to fat in any significant quantity. But overall, the book has decent suggestions and if you're going from a standard, untracked diet to a measured one, this'll help you, but let's call it was it is - a diet. The author would benefit from being more truthful to the science instead of pretending that there is a magical way to lose weight without going into a calorie deficit. Even despite many of the pros stating that they go to sometimes drastic measures to manage weight, he acts as though this diet makes it simple and easy. Peak performance is not natural, the body cares about survival, not a few seconds off your 5k. Elite performance will require sacrifice.

I want to preface my review by stating that I have extensive background in exercise science, nutrition and human performance. There is very little from a nutrition or performance standpoint that I am not already familiar with as I keep up with most peer reviewed academic journals. Having said that, I learned a great deal from Mr Fitzgerald's book. Perhaps more importantly, I was able to put this knowledge into practice. I cannot say enough good things about the brilliance that is this book. If you are serious about honing your performance, you should buy this book.About me: I am a serious runner in my mid 30's who averages about 100 miles per week. I mostly stick to 5k's and 10k's, but did my first marathon last year and came in at 2:59. I was a state runner at high school, but never quite fast enough to make the college grade. My 800m repeats are fast as are my miles, but I knew that in order to make serious PR gains I needed to drop weight in a healthy way. This book has been by blueprint for getting there. The book has proved to be so comprehensive, well-researched and insightful. It's principles are beautifully and artfully laid out. For the past 4 months I've been following closely the dietary quality score approach and managing my hunger and I've gone from 165 lbs to 155 (I hit my goal weight a few days ago!) The last 5 lbs were stubbornly difficult to shed, but I got there. This spring I'm going to see how my new racing weight will allow me perform at my 2nd marathon. Stay tuned! The Dietary Quality Score is such a holistic, refreshing approach to eating. I found it so outstanding that I created a family DQS chart for our little boy with magnets on the refrigerator. We challenge him to get as high of a score as possible every day. Thanks Mr Fitzgerald for your comprehensive work!

Age group competitive marathoner here. The book is meant as a complement to calorie tracking, with tips on what healthy foods to eat and some pointers to how many carbs are needed in an athlete's diet which is helpful. It's more of a Daniel's formula (building blocks) than Pfitzinger approach (ready to use plans), to put it in runner's terms. It's useful for people who haven't been paying attention to their eating habits and nutrition, probably even eye-opening to the "if the furnace is hot enough..." people, but not a lot of new things to learn for those who are not new to healthy eating. The DQS App and methodology don't add much, you could go on a "nuts and wine" diet and congratulate yourself with great daily DQS scores.

Another solid endurance sport nutritional book from Matt Fitzgerald, this one focusing on weight control. It can be a challenge to balance the energy needs and hunger management associated with endurance training with the weight control many of us desire for better performance. This book has plenty of useful strategies, grounded in nutritional science. Difference lifestyles and performance levels are considered. I do wish he was a little bit clearer on how weight loss actually occurs (you need a calorie deficit and the book seems to sometimes dance around that). Overall, recommended for anyone with an interest in the subject.

I am very glad I found this guide BEFORE our recent trip to Morocco. After reading it, I was much more enthusiastic about visiting the madrassas in the cities we visited.Very clear explanations of the designs that you will see at the various buildings.History and background of the different architectural styles and designs are well-explained.We first found these Approach Guides before a trip to India. This one did not disappoint.

I used their guides for S. E. Asia and found them very detailed and very useful if you are interested in the culture and architecture. Not a "cheap shopping" guide. Since I spend a lot of time in Morocco I was curious on how they presented it. Bottom line, I wished I had seen this book before. Am going back in April and will use a lot of the information on things I had missed. Make sure you watch their linked videos.

It was so easy and fulfilling to anticipate each city we visited in Morocco through the photos and background provided in the e-book. I looked for a hard copy to drag along, but the internet services though out the country made the e-book work just fine.

The guides are excellent in explaining architectural and decorative details found in Morocco. Not as comprehensive a travel guide as the title suggests, however.

Don't leave home without it! I was on tour for 2 weeks in Morocco in Nov. and Dec. 2014 and found this guide invaluable. It begins with generous introductory material about the architecture and decoration seen in Morocco. Monuments in 6 cities are well described with maps and highlighted closeup photographs: Rabat, Salé, Meknes, Fez, Marrakech, Casablanca. The most important sites are indicated by a * (13 out of 23). I visited 13 of the 23 monuments described in the guide and found the * rankings very helpful to prioritize the most important sites to see with limited time. I learned about some gems only through this guide: 1) Abu al-Hasan Madrasa in Salé, which is a beautiful courtyard building that you will have all to yourself and that is similar in style to the most famous madrasas in Fez and Marrakech, 2) Koutoubia Mosque's Minbar in the Badi Palace in Marrakech, which is described by the authors as the highlight of Badi Palace; in my experience, this is one of the highlights of my trip to Morocco. This sacred pulpit was constructed in Córdoba, Spain, in 1137 and stood in an earlier mosque in Marrakech that was replaced with the Koutoubia Mosque, where it stood until the 1900s. It was restored by a U.S.-Moroccan team headed by the Metropolitan Museum in the late 1990s. The guide provides links to the texts of 2 very complete and helpful references with closeup photographs; no photos are allowed at the actual site. Although other guidebooks mention or describe briefly the Minbar, only this guidebook goes into detail.

The focus on art and architecture, with an historical context, is superb, and makes this different and more useful than more general guide books. Well written, easy to follow.

How does someone review the most emotional, roller coaster ride of a series conclusion they've ever read? In truth? I'm not really sure but I have a lot of feels that I'm struggling to put into words.I adored A Darker Shade of Magic when I first visited the four Londons of V.E. Schwab's world. It quickly made my list of must-read fantasies. Then came A Gathering of Shadows and all hell broke loose. So much happened and so fast that I was left in a daze upon finishing and forced to wait for what seemed like an eternity until A Conjuring of Light released.Honestly, I was dreading the release a bit because it meant the end of the Shades of Magic series and I wasn't ready for that. I'm still not ready and I've already read it. So right, the book. Was it good?Do you really need to ask me that?I'll start by saying that while A Gathering of Shadows was crazy action and all sorts of things happening at once, A Conjuring of Light slowed things down a bit but not in a bad way. Loose ends needed to be tied up and I think of the three books, this was the most emotional both from the story perspective as well as reading it.AGOS left off on a major cliffhanger that's quickly addressed at the beginning of ACOL but that's not the worst thing the gang has to deal with this time around. Where the book lacked some of the action of previous installments, it more than made up for it with the relationships between all the characters. Everyone has a part to play and are forced to make heartbreaking decisions that had me flying from one page to the next.Goodness, this is hard without spoiling something from a previous book.So the big bad from Black London has decided to take over a new world and while it's a battle of who will come out on top at the end of the day, there's a lot of backstory dropped into this one that you don't see in previous books. Holland, for example, gets a whole damn history written for him and I was internally bawling (just wait, the tears broke through by the end). He's a character that I loved to hate in ADSOM, then he began redeeming himself (marginally) in AGOS, and finally came around in ACOL.Though he can't hold a candle to my ships. Last book we met Alucard and I fell in love with an unavailable "privateer" (I mean, Kell is my one true love so that's alright, I'll fight Lila). The sailor and Rhy needed a happy ending and I was screaming every few chapters because it was constantly under attack. There were moments I may have had a minor freak out. No big deal. Those two had the biggest struggle of my ships. To be honest, I expected more with Lila and Kell but the two had that unspoken relationship where you know they're a thing but nothing is ever said. It comes through their actions. They did relatively well throughout the whole book, though had their respective personal struggles as well as balancing the dynamic of the entire group.Somehow I've kept it together this far but just give me a moment. I have to talk about the ending. The ending. It's over.First, every time I see the word Anoshe I start tearing up (and yes, that includes when I typed it). But it's nothing compared to when I reached that first conclusion of the story. You know, that moment when everything is (relatively) alright and what's coming up is the wrap-up, the conclusion to the conclusion.I stopped reading, 17 pages to go. And I sat there, fighting the tears and the lump in my throat because somehow all those emotions snuck up on me. I don't cry very often, like ever really. And never over a book.Almost ruined the pages with tears, y'all. Moved it just in time. And so I picked up the book once more and I read those last 17 pages and closed it, completing the end of an extraordinary fantasy series. I have never had such a strong reaction to a series ending. Ever. And I'm not sure I will again.Don't let these books go to the wayside. If you haven't started the series and decided to read this review anyway, I'm very confused but alright, now go read them! And if you're putting off ACOL... I understand. You'll likely never be ready for the end but know that you're not alone in that. And I don't think there's anything else I can truly say as my heart hurts too much to put those feelings in words. I'll just leave you with one that, if it holds no meaning now, it soon will.Anoshe.

I held off my overall review of this series until this book, so here's my opinion of the previous installments:Book 1 was a satisfactory burst of originality, drawing enough comparisons to many other prior fantasy novels to be considered a member of that clique, but perhaps not original *enough* to set itself above or even high in that clique. Score: 3 and half to 4 stars.Book 2 continued to make a nod toward ideas that came before, namely the main event, the Elemental Games, which drew the obvious comparison in name to the Hunger Games but was actually more akin to the Triwizard Tournament from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The Games were less exciting than I expected, mostly because of the obvious parallel to those works (felt like I'd been there before), but also because the entire book was slow until it ended on a cliffhanger involving Kell, whose action which brought about the cliffhanger is rather unbelievable. Score: 3 stars. Now, for Book 3. If you've read to Book 2, you *have* to read the third book because of the damn cliffhanger. My issue with this book is the lack in character development. I've read other reviews that comment on the abundance of character development, reviews written by people who read the books in the same way I did (over a period of less than a week). With such an uninterrupted amount of time to simply read, it's clear who develops into a round character and who doesn't. In my opinion (and I acknowledge that there are many opinions that might not agree with this), no one developed in a significant way.Yes, Book 1 Rhy is a sheltered, spoiled prince but he's not a jerk and his desires to be a good brother, a good king, etc. remain the same throughout. Yes, Book 1 Lila is a lost little puppy without a purpose and by Book 3 she's found her calling. But her hasty, off-the-cuff actions are always used as a plot device to further the action.Yes, Book 1 Kell is flawed: arrogant, broody-without-a-cause, weak, too emotional. And Book 3 Kell is the exact same. All other characters might as well be considered wiser, weaker, or more damaged extensions of these three. The story was unpredictable, yes. But I found myself less thrilled and more confused by the erratic nature of the action. One of the things I liked about the first book was the lack in detail of the magic; any story about magicians that delves too far into the magic or starts introducing new magic in the final act loses credibility and by the end of this book, I felt that line had been crossed. It's probably a hard thing to manage, even J.K. Rowling wasn't immune to that pitfall (see Deathly Hallows). And, finally, as others have noted, the final pages left a lot to be desired. It's another pitfall: book got to be too long, had to end it soon, so the author just sawed it off and left it rough around the edges rather than smooth. It's not the worst book I've read, it's not the best series I've read. But if you started it, you have to finish it.

What an incredibly satisfying end to the series. I naturally had high expectations for this book after having loved the previous two books, but even still, this book surpassed my expectations. I cried throughout the final section of the book, not necessarily because of the actual events happening on the page, but because it was so emotionally fulfilling and felt like such a satisfying conclusion to everything. Everything I could have hoped for in a final book.
