This was a great guide for an 8-day trip around the city. It is fairly compact and was easy to carry if we needed to refer to it while we were out. At some of the major sites (Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia), we used this book instead of renting/purchasing guide materials at the sites and it was great since it contains maps for individual sites and historical information. The book is organized by neighborhoods and has separate sections for accommodations, eating, etc. I found that a little tricky, if we were looking for somewhere to eat, to be going back and forth between a neighborhood section and the food section, but I guess there is an advantage to having all of those types of listings in one place--you can easily compare.The guide had a lot of historical information which I loved and gave a lot of context to individual sites and the city. It seemed like it had all the info we needed to be informed travelers in the city.
I've used the Rough Guide for all my travels for nearly 20 years - it has never let me down. The Istanbul Guide was no different - just the right amount of information to get you where you need to go and know a little bit about where you are.
As with all Rough Guides, it offers not only clear basics, like how to's, but also a nice array of detail--specific bank and ATM locations as an example--and more detailed information, like local history, or anecdotal detail about locations, people and experiences.
The tip on parking outside of Lugano saved us enough money to cover th cost of the guide plush some.
