A History of Cookbooks: From Kitchen to Page over Seven Centuries (California Studies in Food and Culture)

Review

"Notaker’s impressive work of research calls for cookbooks to be read and valued the same as literature . . . . A History of Cookbooks also serves up a wonderful history of publishing, since that first printed Italian cookbook coincides with the advent of Gutenberg’s press" (Print Magazine)“This stirring work will enhance our engagement with the kitchens of our ancestors.” (Times Literary Supplement)"A complex and dense read, and the author is to be complimented on maintaining clarity throughout. For the food historian it is a useful reminder that cookbooks have scope beyond that of mere instruction, and for the literary historian it highlights the complexities that underlie apparently simple manuals. It is a book for serious students of both fields." (Petits Propos Culinaires)“It is the work of a polyglot, a researcher passionate about his subject, and an indefatigable reader. . . . Henry Notaker’s work is a reference book worth having in any good library.” (Agricultural, Food and Environmental Studies)"Well-argued and researched work, taking a new and intriguing approach to a popular subject.” (CHOICE 2018-12-01)"...a dense but well-argued and researched work, taking a new and intriguing approach to a popular subject." (CHOICE 2018-07-01)

From the Inside Flap

“This astonishing book brings thoroughness, discipline, and a new level of scholarship to the history and the nature of one of the commonplaces in our lives. Henry Notaker examines the cookbook through a meticulous dissection of the roles of all those who participate in its creation. He traces the complex process, from the inventive mind of the cook to the responsibilities of the writers, designers, printers, and even those who ultimately see to the distribution of a physical volume that might be found in kitchens anywhere. This is not, however, some kind of simple behind-the-scenes-at-the-zoo tour; it is a profound exploration of a cultural product through a rigorous exploration of the many contexts in which it comes into being. And, beyond that, it is marvelous to read—serious but companionable and rich with good stories. This is a treat for food lovers and for those who love reading about books.”—Nach Waxman, Kitchen Arts & Letters, New York City “An absolutely magisterial and meticulously researched study of printed cookbooks from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century. The details revealed are immense and the author’s grasp of the material astonishing.”—Ken Albala, author of Beans: A History “An innovative and original literary history of the Western cookbook that is extraordinarily broad in its range—from the social status of cooks to the evolution of time-keeping devices.”—Barbara Santich, author of Bold Palates: Australia’s Gastronomic Heritage

As a lay antique cookbook enthusiast and blogger of the same, this was a fascinating read. Really appreciated all of the references to different works that I myself have found and enjoyed. Not appropriate for the modern cookbook enthusiast or cook - you really have to know about some of the works and authors the author references to enjoy this book. Gained a new appreciation for organization, authorship, and evolution of cookbooks over time. Some chapters were a bit of a stretch and I skimmed through those - like the use of the various grammatical structures - I'm a language person, and even this was a tough sell. If you're a fan of antique cookbooks on any sort of level, you'll get something out of this book and walk away with a new appreciation for the cookbooks you love so much.

56197104Cherese Akhavein's review Apr 29, 2017 · editit was amazingThe Ebb Tide by Beverly Lewis has a perfect title because if you really think about it our life is very much like the Ebb Tide, low at points and in need of Gods gentle hand and then high at other points were we think all is fine.In this book you will meet Sallie Riehl, who is struggling with her love for her family and joining the community so she can keep her promise to her Mother to join the church, however can she be happy and fulfilled to herself? Sallie travels to Cape May as a nanny to a English family she meet while being a waitress, there she meets a Mennonite young man Kevin who for the first time she realizes there is someone out there who understands her and her need for knowledge. As the summer progresses there friendship progresses and Sallie opens up to God and his plan however her heart is still confused with her family and her place within the community. Can Sallie see her place within this difficult time or will see settle. Will Kevin be a friend or will God lead them to a different place.Beverly Lewis has opened the readers eye to the life of us all in this book, we all live the Ebb Tide and rely on Gods strength to carry us through those low times.I highly recommend this book.

I had ordered The Ebb Tide through Amazon and when it arrived, I started reading put it down just long enough to get a nights sleep. Got up the next morning, got my cup of coffee and started reading had it done the end of the day. As usual when I start reading Mrs. Lewis books I cannot put them down till I get them read. I met her a year ago when she was in Orrville, OH at the library, it was one of the high lights of my life. A friend introduced me to her books several years ago and I now have a collection of her books. Just waiting for the next one to come out. Every once in awhile I start at the first book that I have, and reread them all. I always put the date in the books when I read them and also when I reread them. Thank you Mrs. Lewis for being the wonderful Author that you are. God Bless You.

I have loved each of Beverly Lewis' books! Each of them, their characters, their struggle with their faith, either to keep it or break away or to find their faith outside of their Amish upbringings! The way Ms. Lewis writes her books deals with the struggles her characters face in such a way that you can see yourself in some of them! Maybe their struggle to find your own faith or to keep the faith you already have found! We can each see ourselves in her characters so many times! Our struggles with our own faith, either to find it or to keep it is paramount in each of her books in a very different way each time! That is what makes each of her books so different yet so simular at the same time! I really just love each one of her books! What a writer!!!My reviews are different in each book as I don't always write about the characters with each one! This is one of those books!Read one and you WILL be hooked onto her writting!! Thank you, Ms Lewis, for another wonderful read with more incredible characters!Blessings and happy reading!

Where do I start? I have read at least 20 of Beverly Lewis's books and enjoyed them all. But I think I enjoyed this one the most. Why? First the setting. I share the main character's love of the beach. The descriptions were just right--makes me want to visit. I can picture all the details with all of my senses. I enjoyed Sallie's summer at the beach almost as much as she did. Next, all the characters were likable and relatable. I can relate to Sallie's desire to travel and learn and see the world. Kevin is a genuine nice guy, and interesting too. ( I share hist interest in marine biology too.) I love the Logan family too- real people. Their faith is woven nicely into the book without being preachy. Even their relatives are kind and understanding. The plot was well written and enjoyable--just the kind of read I need to put me in a peaceful frame of mind.

I think I have read all of Beverly's book and when I saw this was coming out, I couldn't wait to get it. And it was NOT a disappointment! Loved it! It was a great story and not as "Amish" as most Amish books are but yet it still kept with their theme. Couldn't put it down. Can't wait for her next book!!

This book is one of many Amish books I have read. It is a different type of story than Beverly Lewis usually writes and could be a good introduction for a first time reader. It is about an Amish girl who lives in an English home for the summer and not as heavy into the Amish life and religion. I really liked the Abram's Daughers 5-book series. There was more about the Amish way of life and the story was more elaborate and I couldn't put the books down. We passed the books around our office and when one co-worker finished her book she would chide the other co-worker to hurry up and finish the book she needed next. It created quite a frenzy until the books were all passed though the group. If you have time, read all her books. They will take you away to a different place in life.

Beverly Lewis has done it again! This beautiful story reminds us to pray and seek God's will in every decision. Not every conclusion is expected but God's will is always perfect. This was a lovely story and I would love to see a couple of sequels featuring the sister and aunt with Sallie and Kevin as secondary characters! I have grown fond of them and would like to know more about their adventures!

Sallie is a amazing young woman. When the Logan family asked her to be a nanny for their daughter her life will change. Kevin is truly a remarkable man. Watching these two become friends is wonderful. Sallie is trying to decide if she should join the church and she is struggling. Beverly Lewis will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next in Sallies life. This book is hard to stop reading. You will feel God working throughout this whole story. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

the book could have undergone at least one more edit, assuming it had already had at least one. Misplaced modifiers galore. Missing punctuation. Transitions? Very few. I could go on. At the end I wondered whether this line of books is supposed to read like the Reader's Digest Condensed version. Or, as I suspect, editors don't edit anymore. The 4 stars are for storyline.

The Secret Orphan is by Glynis Peters. This book is set in England beginning in 1940 during World War II. It also skips to the present, nearly sixty years later, where a woman is dying and she begins to relive her life.Elenor was summoned to her Aunt’s home and reluctantly went. At least she was getting away from being a slave to her brothers. The only affection she had had was when her Mother was alive. Their Dad had a very stubborn opinion that women were only there to take care of their man. Therefore, it was her responsibility to take care of him and her twin brothers. When he died, things just became more difficult for Elenor. Then, their Aunt summoned her to come take care of her. Her brothers simply said goodbye and left it at that. Elenor loved her family farm but knew there was no place for her. At her Aunt’s home, she was expected to take care of her aunt and learn to be a lady. It was difficult for Elenor; but she did her best. Her aunt lived in a house with a housekeeper and her husband and daughter. George, the husband, was a tutor and was gone a lot. Victoria cooked and kept house while raising their daughter, Rose. Other than giving her a place to stay and food to eat, neither paid much attention to Ruth. Ruth and Elenor became good friends as both were lonely. For Rose, Elenor put up with George’s chauvinistic ways. Then, her aunt died leaving Elenor alone. She went back to the family farm for safety and because it was now hers alone since both boys were killed in the war. Can she run the farm by herself?Rose was a darling little girl who was very bright and a brilliant pianist, even at five. Her parents gave her food and shelter but didn’t give her love. Victoria was lucky to be able to find a position which allowed her husband and daughter to live with her. Victoria was careful to keep Rose away from the main house when possible. After Elenor left for the farm, Rose and her Mother stayed at the house, keeping it going. George was in London on a trip and died in the Blitz. When bombers flew over Coventry, their house was hit. Rose was found alive in the ruin but Victoria was dead. Where was Rose to go since her family was wiped out. Of course, to Elenor. Can she survive the nightmares of the raid? Will Rose adjust to the country? The book is great. It shows clearly the complicated life a woman had during

The best parts of the story are scenes of everyday life at the worst parts of the war. The number of people it took to work on a farm, raising food not just for themselves but overseen by officials trying to produce for everyone is fascinating. The fact that the healthy young men that would have been doing this work were away at war or dead, so it was done by women. The Wikipedia article on Coventry has some historical background to explain a few things that probably most British know but most Americans don't - and a particular plot point isn't explained in the book.

I loved the book. The characters were so real. It was really a good book but I was not happy with the ending, I thought it should of said more. But I still enjoyed it.

How i loved this book!! A story of love and compassion. It had humor and the author had a good knowledge of human behavior. The story line kept moving and was hard to put down. Very goid

Interesting story. I think the character development could have been done better. I found the writing stilted and some things went totally without explanation. There was a mention by Jackson that he had received a picture of a plane from Rose asking about the plane he flew. Rose said she did not send that. The matter was dropped there rather than used as a hint that Rose's father had ulterior motives.Elenor left servants she did not like nor trust in charge of her home and belongings. There had even been evidence that the man had been pilfering her aunts belongings.Over and over, situations were presented that nothing came of. Too many loose ends.

The lack of editing is so bad, it takes what might have been an interesting plot & likeable characters & turns them into annoying exercises in patience. There's a reason it was only 99 cents. If you've got nothing else to read, this might do.

From the first page to the last this story grips your attention and does not let go until the end. I was intrigued by the main character as she is a naive young farm girl who is thrown into situations that she doesn't understand or cannot comprehend where they might go with her or if she will be safe. Sometimes I believe she might be smart and other times I think she might be. But ultimately she make the correct decisions and it's okay. End well.
