The title sounded quite appealing as well as the reviews by other renowned sports writers such as Marty Appel and Jonathan Eig. However, the text was more of a simple narrative of Greenberg's batting performance in each game of the 1938 season. Connections to events in Europe and the spread of Nazism were offered in a cursory way. I was hoping for more insight regarding the anti-Semitism encountered by Greenburg in the world of baseball as he pursued Ruth's iconic home run record. Again, this was treated superficially. The nearly 35 page appendix was a game log of the entire season. Great if you appreciate statistics but I must wonder if this necessary and germane to the title, "Hatred And Home Runs In The Shadow Of War"

My dad, Bill Trotter, was a major league pitcher in the late 1930s and early 1940s for St. Louis and Washington. I have heard him speak of Greenberg many times. He always said he was intentionally walked to keep him from hitting the long ball, not because he was a Jew. In fact the idea is absurd to a real major leaguer and was sportswriter stuff. In addition, Hank was such a gentleman he was admired throughout the league. There were only eight teams in the league so teams played a series once a month or so and became very familiar with each other.Ruth hit his 60 in 1927 so it had only been a standing record for 11 seasons, unlike in 1974 when Hank Aaron was breaking Ruth's career mark of 714. Then it been a part of American lore for 47 years. This book has lots of facts to savor so do not go looking for a lot of religious prejudice.

The back cover of this book shows that distinguished authors Marty Appel, Dan Epstein, and Jonathan Eig praise this book and who am I to disagree with them? However, I found this to be a matter-of-fact book covering the year Hank Greenberg hit 58 home runs with a lot of information regarding other matters in 1938 as well. I didn't find the writing to be riveting at all with each chapter divided up into the months of the baseball season. The end of each chapter contained notes in regard to where the information in each chapter was acquired. The book contains 186 pages of text including the notes. The remainder of the book through page 235 includes an appendix, bibliography, index, and acknowledgments. The book contains eight pages of photographs with a glaring error showing a photo of the statue of Hank Greenberg at Comerica Park in Detroit. Unfortunately the caption under the photo states that the statue is located in Progressive Field. My stars! If you want to read a book on Hank Greenberg I would suggest either Hank Greenberg: The Story of My Life by Ira Berkow or Hank Greenberg: The Hero of Heroes by John Rosengren.

To me the greatest thing about Hank Greenberg… was the unbelievable role model he was for the Jewish people… especially during the years of Hitler’s reign. This was also the time in American history when Henry Ford was spewing anti-Semitic filth in the United States… and Adolph Hitler actually had Ford’s picture on his office wall behind his desk. Hall of Famer Greenberg was also one of the great power hitters in baseball history… and continued to succeed year in and year out… despite more anti-Semitic / racist trash being dished upon him than anyone in baseball history… until the arrival of Jackie Robinson when he broke the color barrier years later… and it was also “Gentleman” Hank who took the time to show great kindness to Jackie when he arrived on the scene. Jackie was quoted as saying: “Class tells. It sticks out all over Mr. Greenberg.” The author provides numerous timely and meaningful quotes throughout the book… but unfortunately there are also a number of typos… and the very short reporting on this one season (1938)… doesn’t really build the kind of gripping story a reader would hope for. It comes across more as month by month chapters that contain what seems almost like narrated box score and/or game summaries. It’s obvious the admiration and respect the author has for the subject… and the attempt to link the growing hateful unrest in the world with Greenberg’s quest to break the hallowed Babe Ruth’s record of sixty home-runs in a season… comes up short (58)… just like Greenberg’s chasing the Babe. It’s a very short book of one-hundred-eighty-six pages (not counting the appendixes, sources, etc.) One thing I’m very glad the author highlighted at the end was the fact of the many years that many patriotic ballplayers gave up willingly from their career to defend our country and how much higher their lifetime stats would almost definitely have been… such as Greenberg and Ted Williams as an example. Hank was so patriotic…. that after he originally enlisted… and then a few years later was Honorably Discharged due to age… when Pearl Harbor was bombed… he immediately re-enlisted… and refused to take some “powder-puff” assignment entertaining the troops like many such as Joe DiMaggio did. There are two quotes I’d like to include in my review…“I CAME TO FEEL THAT IF I, AS A JEW, HIT A HOME RUN, I WAS HITTING ONE AGINST HITLER.” Hank Greenberg“HANK GREENBERG WAS WHAT THEY ALL SAID WE COULD NEVER BE. HE DEFIED HITLER’S STEREOTYPE. FOR THAT VERY REASON, I THINK HE MAY HAVE BEEN THE SIMGLE MOST IMPORTANT JEW TO LIVE IN THE 1930’S.” Alan Dershowitz

Author tells the story of Jewish baseball great Hank Greenberg dealing with antisemitism in the USA. Interwoven with antisemitism going on at the time in Europe during WWII and the holocaust.
