I have been a follower of Ayn Rand since the sixties, but still learned facts about her life from Female Force: Ayn Rand. I also purchased a copy for a friend who is just starting to get into Objectivism and it was well received. I will probably order at least one more; sometimes a short, concise presentation will be read when a longer book might not. And, it may lead to an interest in reading further.
(Reviewed by GEN LAGRECA) Bluewater Comics scored a big hit with this new addition to its series on notable women. Written by economist and Margaret-Thatcher-biographer John Blundell and illustrated by Todd Tennant, this handsome book gives a colorful introduction to the life, work, and ideas of the great female force in the battle for reason, individualism, and capitalism. The book artistically enhances some of the famous photographs of Ayn Rand to create striking images. The glowing skin and vibrant eyes of the illustrations capture the inner passion and intelligence of the novelist/philosopher.Key scenes from Ayn Rand's novels and plays are dramatically portrayed in full-page layouts that give readers a taste of her provocative stories and ideas. For example, there's a scene in which a man holds a woman in his arms in a remote valley with mountains on one side and an industrial plant on the other, and with a credo hanging from a sign on the building: "I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." After reading the comic, readers will want to grab a copy of her novel ATLAS SHRUGGED to understand the full meaning of that romantic and philosophically intriguing scene. And readers who are already familiar with her works will enjoy the visual depictions of them. The book also chronicles the compelling personal story of how young Ayn fled from the oppressive collectivism of Soviet Russia to become America's champion of individualism. One page shows how, as the Soviets are expropriating her family's property, young Ayn is discovering another world, of Aristotle and logic, displaying her remarkable intellectual independence at an early age.FEMALE FORCE: AYN RAND captures its subject's grueling professional struggle---and ultimate triumph. Like Howard Roark, the creative architect of her novel THE FOUNTAINHEAD, Ayn Rand was an innovator, a designer of ideas that clashed with the conventions of the day. The story of her professional integrity, philosophical battles with her enemies, and hard-earned achievements, portrayed vividly in the comic, will be an inspiration to readers.Among various quotes from Ayn Rand about her philosophy of Objectivism, the book includes the resounding one-sentence summary of what she called "a philosophy for living on earth": "My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute."FEMALE FORCE: AYN RAND is both easy-to-read and meaty. It's a short, economical book to enjoy and to give to others. It offers an invigorating splash of Ayn Rand and invites readers to take the full plunge into the streams and rapids of her books for philosophical adventures they'll never forget.Gen LaGreca is author of NOBLE VISION, a novel about a doctor who battles a state-run health system to save his work, his ideals, and his beautiful patient. Noble Vision
The writing is a bit simplistic, but it accurately paints the broad strokes of Ayn Rand's life and captures the essential motivating elements of her philosophy. There is some effective use of direct quotes from her work as well as some interesting collage work. However, I do not enjoy the style of some of the images as the lighting on the figures was a bit fuzzy with a "soap opera" soft focus. Overall, it is not the most brilliant piece of graphic writing, but it is a pleasure to see Rand's work being presented honestly within the medium.
It has nice drawings and some interesting biographical information about her pre-USA which is rare info for people that have only read her books.
An enjoyable and accessible introduction to Ayn Rand. FEMALE FORCE: AYN RAND brilliantly portrays in a brief 22 pages the scope of Rand's life and achievements. The illustrations are well done and convey the challenges Rand faced in her journey from a child in Russia to a profound writer and philosopher.
A fun introduction to Rand's life and works. This comic cleverly manages to provide a brief biography of Ayn Rand in 22 pages while also getting to the heart of each of her novels (not easily done given the length of most of them). The linking of Rand's life and works is well done. Having read some of Rand's novels and known a few Randians, I very much enjoyed this reminder of what I liked and disliked about Rand's world view.
The writing is so small that I can't read the words, even with a Bausch & Lomb magnifying glass! Under the glass, the words are blury. The comic does not fill up the screen and I can't seem to make it larger. All and all, a waste of money!Since Amazon is previewing this, please give me a refund. Thank you.
This comic book is misleading in many ways.First of all it has an advertisement for PETA, an organization which puts animals before humans.Such a concept is totally opposite to what Ayn Rand, the champion of rational man, valued. It seems that PETA is trying to ride on the coattails of the benevolence Ayn Rand created with us who are rational.Secondly it pretends to be supported by the Ayn Rand Institute by mentioning a collaboration with some unknown non-existing Ayn Rand Foundation. It is not supported by ARI.Don't buy this if you believe in reason and have the integrity to live by it 100%.UPDATE: The Ayn Rand Institute just had the publisher remove the PETA ad and replace it with their own ad. So all is well and I'll change my rating accordingly.
