I went to school with Kevin Gale, and heard this story from his mouth when he returned. I read this book when it was first translated from the original Hebrew and loved it. Everything in this book is true, Kevin is an honorable person and doesn't tell tales. I was thrilled to see it's being made into a movie and my old school chum's story told to an even larger audience, as it is truly a tale for the ages, an adventure you won't want to miss!

Yossi is very candid in recounting the many poor choices he made during this adventure. Several times I wondered how he came out of the circumstances alive. However, I failed to identify with him strongly because his attitude about the rainforests seemed immature to me, almost like he was going on a Disney ride rather than being equipt for survival against animals, weather, and parasites unknown to him beforehand. He was similarly immature in his connections to others, putting trust in those he ought not have and failing to make solid connections to those he should have valued better. In the Epilogue he redeemed his character very much in my eyes. (SPOILERS) Having barely survived the jungle, he came away with a love for it as a whole ecosystem. He made rainforest conservation a focus in his life and initiated several conservation sites around the world.

"Jungle” is a captivating book for explorers not just of the physical world but also of the mind.I have a personal interest in Yossy's story since I have also planned to go through the Madidi jungle. I enlisted two friends who chickened out at the last minute. My inspiration was the "Mines of King Solomon”. But recently there was a book and a movie about a related theme which is about Percy Fawcett and his search of the city of Z. Percy crossed parts of Bolivia about 6 times 100 years ago. He disappeared in Brazil to never be found again, just like Yossy's friend Marcus. The difference between Percy and Yossi is that while both got enamored of the jungle, Percy only criticised the people who hired him and paid him with gold. Yossi, on the other hand, came back to Bolivia and tried to do something beneficial for the people he encountered. The book leaves one end open and that is the disappearance of his friend Marcus as well as the mystery of his guide Karl, whose story and background remains something that in time should be known since he lived in Bolivia for over 10 years.I saw the movie and it reflects the book, but it should have been done in Bolivia. It misses natural scenarios like the so called valley of the moon.Anyway, “Jungle" is worth reading and there is something to learn.

Yossi and his companions were all dreamers looking for adventure in the jungle. Being young, naive and trusting they set off on a journey with a total stranger believing that he was a good man and would take care of them. Their experiences on the river and in the jungle are difficult to imagine surviving. Only their powerful will to live allowed Yossi and Kevin to survive. While their story is amazing, reading the book was at times tedious. The first half of the book is just walking, walking, walking thru the jungle. Day after day. Yossi's account of his journey alone in the jungle is difficult to see thru my eyes. Immersing myself into the story beside the lead character is what keeps me reading. I see what they see and feel what they feel. That just didn't happen for me here. I don't know if it is the style of writing or that so many important little details were left out to keep the length of the book manageable. This is an amazing story of his will to live and overcome so many obstacles, both physical and emotional, that should have killed him.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get the real first hand account of their journey.

There is another good one. It must be a true story. About twenty years ago, during a trip to the Bolivian jungle, I met a guide named Lazaro, on the river Beni (rio Beni), that told me about it, he claimed that he was part of the rescue team at the time. He said the title of the book in Spanish was " Regresso del (rio) Tuichi. Initially, I couldn't find an original copy of the book, however, several years later, there it was; in English, on Amazon!!!

I bought this book after watching the movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it, although it's not particularly well-written. I wish it included a map to help the reader orient him or herself while trying to follow along. My mind always went back to the movie when I was lost.

Yossi definitely has more determination than I could have ever mustered in his situation. This true account will speak volumes to you about mind over body. What a survivor!!!!

I enjoyed reading the survival portion of the book once they found themselves in that predicament, but I guess I'm just not very adventurous. The history's they encountered seemed predictable. I can't imagine wandering off into the jungle with so little training, preparation, and protection. Also, depending on a guide based only on his word and an incomplete map seems foolish to me. I tip my hat to Yossi's tenacity and life accomplishments since his jungle adventures.

The nutritional content of baby food is much more important these days now that we know about the dangers of pesticides, etc. I got this book with the vague idea of maybe making organic baby food for my grandchildren when they are visiting, but now I am excited about the whole prospect and will be sharing the information with my daughter. I found the chapter on storing organic food especially helpful, and the penny trick is absolutely amazing! Living in a hurricane zone with frequent loss of power or threat of losing power is a common occurrence, I am surprised I haven't heard of the penny trick before now. I will definitely be utilizing the trick immediately.

I actually bought this book so I can make organic baby food for my friend who has a newborn. I love to garden and always have so many vegetables and fruits left over that sometimes they go bad. There are so many useful ideas in this book that I would have never thought of like using ice cube trays to freeze the food or using wax paper in the freezer. There are many tips and tricks offered for weaning babies too. My kids are older and they also enjoy many of the recipes found in this book such as the baked peaches and the broccoli and cheese nuggets. The book includes information about reading and understanding store bought baby food labels, food allergies and toddler finger foods.

With my first two babies, I was just too overwhelmed to try the idea of making my own baby food. It seemed like it would just be way too much work. After giving birth to my third though, I really want to give it a try. I have breastfed them all to try to give them the most natural options, so why not do the same with their first foods. This book provides the perfect overview for just starting out. I thought I would need all kinds of extra blending and storing devices, but this provided methods using things I already have in the house. The recipes at the end start with babies' first foods and go all the way to finger food options as the baby transitions into a toddler. Since my oldest has allergies, I wish I had read this when he was still a baby. I could have provided him with so many more options just by making them myself. This really does show how doable it can be and provides a lot of extra feeding tips that first time moms especially will appreciate!

I am beyond my child rearing years, but my adult son and step-children have babies so I like to see what is "new". Two of my grandchildren are ready for starting solid foods so I picked up this book. This book an excellent resource that is very thorough. It explains nutritional needs, how to know if the baby is ready for solids, food allergies, storing the food safely, and many healthy recipes. I have to admit, even as an adult, sound so appetizing! This book is a must have for any parent, grandparent, or caregiver of a baby or toddler.

This book is a good, basic guide to the idea of introducing your baby to solid food and is probably best for those who have little or no experience feeding a baby. I'd never heard of the "ice cube" method before and that will definitely be something I keep in mind when the DH and I do have a baby. Love that the author has a nod in there for the parents acknowledging weaning is hard on them too.

This is an interesting, informative book on how you can make organic baby food for your body. The book gives an overview of nutrition for babies and talks about nutrient requirements, food allergies, weaning, moving to solids, what foods to choose and recipes for organic baby foods. Examples of recipes in this book include Potatoes and Pumpkin with Apple Snack and Butternut Squash with Peas. This book also gives you info how to store organic food once you make it. Overall, I would recommend checking this book out for good info on feeding your child and making your own organic baby food.

Was looking for an informative book on feeding of babies and have found one with this well written book. We are preparing for the coming of our first great grandson and it has been a few years, since having to go through the baby thing. The author is very thorough with her presentation and breaks the subject down so that you can easily understand it. From the ounces per weight per day of formula needed, to how to freeze baby food properly. The use of the ice cube trays for freezing is a really good idea. This book would be wonderful for a new mother, offers some really good recipes for organic grown baby foods, such as chicken corn chowder to applesauce muffins for babies. It is great also for us older grandmothers and great grandmothers who have forgotten a lot.

I wish I hadn't wasted money on this book. There were typos and errors throughout and you can tell it's not based on actual research. It's like someone woke up one day and decided to write a book...and finished it before their baby's nap was over. Waste of time and money, unless you're looking for a good laugh.

Review

I cannot overstate the importance, timeliness, and helpfulness of this book. Ed has given us the wisdom that only comes from a heart shaped by the gospel and a deep compassion for people, generated by the love of Jesus. This is a must read and a must share. --Scotty Smith, Senior Pastor, Christ Community Church; author of The Reign of Grace and Objects of His AffectionAn all-too-rare combination of gospel understanding, biblical wisdom, personal empathy and long counseling experience shines through these pages. What is most needed is a course of divinely prescribed anti-depressants. Like a skilled spiritual pharmacist, Ed Welch fills that prescription for us. --Sinclair B. Ferguson, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, S.C.; theologian; author of The Christian Life"I have come to rely on Ed Welch and others at CCEF for guidance and insight in better understanding the issues of the soul that plague many people today. For those who want to address more than just the symptoms of depression, Ed's counsel is invaluable." --Bob Lepine, Co-Host, FamilyLife Today

The great preacher Charles Spurgeon often battled with bouts of depression. In deep ways he wrestled with a most heinous mental health issue which plagued him most of his life. In the midst of ministering to others he remarked that, "I have sometimes been the means in God’s hand of heling a man who suffered with a desponding spirit.  But the help I have rendered has cost me dearly.  Hours after, I have been myself depressed, and I have felt an inability to shake it off."He continues in another place;“I am the subject of depression so fearful that I hope none of you ever get to such extremes of wretchedness as I go to.  But I always get back again by this–I know that I trust Christ.  I have no reliance but in Him, and if He falls, I shall fall with Him.  But if He does not, I shall not.  Because He lives, I shall live also, and I spring to my legs again and fight with my depressions of spirit and get the victory through it.  And so may you do, and so you must, for there is no other way of escaping from it.”Depression, and it's wicked allies, are blind guides. Attaching themselves to the best of us with no regards to gender, education, social status, and leading us down paths we were never intended to travel. In my own battle with Depression, Anxiety, and a host of other issues, few things have helped me in the depths of my most desperate moments. From the moment I picked up, Depression: Looking Up from the Stubborn Darkness, I knew I had found a vital resource which would help me to dispel the fog and despair I currently face. Right from the outset I could tell that Ed Welch knew and understood depression unlike many I have read. In the midst of "pray harder" or "God must be punishing you" I found Welch to be a most comforting companion."Depressive speech is poetic. Prose does not capture the experience, so it is either poetry or silence. Depressed people are eloquent, even when they feel empty at their emotional core devoid of personhood."Welch seemed to understand me as an individual made in the image of God and not merely an autonomous person afflicted with a mental health disease. He knew that in the recesses of my darkened heart there lay a seed of hope even if he had to dig past the layers of decay which had been building up the past 33 years. He had a keen awareness of the way I viewed my existence. The only thing you know is that you are guilty, shameful, and worthless. It is not that you have made mistakes in your life or sinned or reaped futility. It is that you are a mistake; you are sin; you are futility.Ugh! My soul groans at the very reading of that quote but he's quite right. It's not that I have made mistakes in the past, though they are many, or that I have sinned, it's that I am the very embodiment of those things. I remember that I was once alive and vibrant chasing after God.Now, when I think of my status before the Almighty, pain floods in knowing that I am no longer so.I spend countless hours remembering the passion which once ran through my veins like fire. I remember that I was once enjoying a closeness with God that has now been severed, or seemingly so. I trust in the sovereignty of the triune God of the Bible who sits enthroned on the seat of heaven but I wrestle with questions of suffering and his goodness. I wrestle with the reason he chose to play things out in the way they have. What has helped most, in addition to the Scriptures, are the Confessions and Catechisms in which my doctrine finds adequate summary. I find in the Heidelberg Catechism a powerful remedy for the despair I face when walking through my darkest of days.Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death? A. That I am not my own, but belong - body and soul, in life and in death - to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. What a remarkable confession to utter when walking in the valley of the shadow of depression. The very utterance of them can make the faintest heart return with life. Surely there are days when I can barely concentrate or where the anxiety is worse than usual, but I remember that G, in his infinite wisdom, "knit me together and formed all my inward parts." (Psalm 139:13-14)Welch echoes the words of the confession in various places warming even the coldest soul. He comments that "Hope is risky" and quite rightly follows that up with an explanation why;"Underneath depression's veil of passivity is a heart that is busy making choices. Sometimes you prefer hopelessness. You want it. You aspire to it. Isn't that a reasonable way to explain why you are so immune to encouragement? You hear the words and understand them, but you don't want them. Even though self-pity and your attempts to kill hope are not working well, you are loyal to your hope-killing strategy."Can you see why Hope is risky? Hope is risky because it gives opportunity for failure. Hope can be dashed and trampled on the floor, that is, if hope lies on what is seen and what can be gained through our own efforts. We have a mediator in heaven who will never leave our hopes unfulfilled. Depression may be full of paradox at every turn and yet God works in ways we cannot understand this side of eternity. What works the best in the midst of relentless pain and suffering is a relentless love. "Depressed people, like all of us, are aware of kindness and love that is willing to sacrifice. Love always leaves its mark. As a result, depressed people who do best are cushioned by preserving love."We as Christians know of a relentless, pursuing, and preserving love. We have seen it in the face of a man bloodied and hanging on a cross. We have seen it in the very act of the Christ who stepped down from heaven, taking on our very nature, and yet was without sin. We see this love in a suffering servant who. though despised and rejected, bore our sicknesses and carried our pains. A man crushed because of our iniquities and pierced at the very act of our rebellion. Love has none great than that servant who laid his life down for his sheep. In the midst of your darkest pain, in the groaning of your most deepest suffering there is hope. Not merely a hope for right now but a hope which lasts into a glorious eternity with the author of that very hope. I will leave you here with the grace-soaked words which Welch himself concludes his most compelling volume yet;"Your own heart has much to say, but let Jesus have the final word. 'Grace' is the shorthand. In that one word, God takes us out of ourselves and turns our attention onto him, the One who showers forgiving love on us even when we don't realize all that he has forgiven. It is brimming with promises and guarantees....In your battle with the manifold features of depression, Grace to you."

This book is for Christians who know what it is like to “walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” At one time or another, that is all of us. While the book is grounded in Scripture, it is mindful of medical, psychological, and historical perspectives on depression. It does not discount any treatment approach, but it asserts that any method apart from deep spiritual soul-searching will fall short of the mark. It is a compassionate book, full of loving understanding and gentle exhortation.

Edward Welch is a gifted author and caring person. I've read his book on Anxiety and now this one on Depression. Note- if you or someone you know suffers from depression, you don't want to be reading this book in public. It will pull at your heart on every page and leave you sobbing (in a good way most of the time)!

I had this sitting in my Kindle for months before I finally decided to read it, partly because I just wasn't sure if I really wanted to read yet another book on depression. So glad I started reading it. It is by far one of the best and most practical books I have read on depression. There has already been a lot said about the book so I will only add that if you are struggling with depression or know someone who is this is a must read. Finally a book on depression that doesn't leave you feel hopeless and more depressed but offers hope and practical thoughts on how to walk through depression.

I'm encouraged after reading this book. After the death of my 26 year old son in 2013, discouragement has been unwanted visitor. I'm grateful for men wise in the scriptures to remind me of His sufficiency and love for me.

Very thorough and practical in the discussion of the symptoms of depression and the techniques to work through when it hits. Saturated with the Bible, but does NOT pigeonhole depression as only a spiritual-sin problem as (unfortunately) many pastors espouse from the pulpit. This book is a big help and I believe will be my go-to resource when I feel depression creeping up on me in the future.

Great book on depression from the Biblical Counseling perspective. It's open to secular methods and diagnoses but is strongly biblical. It's a breath of fresh air from the biblical counseling camp.

Presents hope and help for depression. Notes many causes and encourages us to look for clues to our cause and then helps us deal with each cause. Treats depression as pain and suffering and shows how the Bible teaches that suffering has a purpose and so does your depression.

Review

“I love her. She’s so brilliant. I don’t think Rollin’ in the Deep would exist if it wasn’t for Wanda Jackson.” —Adele "Look around today and you can hear lots of rocking girl singers who owe an unconscious debt to the mere idea of a woman like Wanda. She was standing up on stage with a guitar in her hands and making a sound that was as wild and raw as any rocker, man or woman, while other gals were still asking, 'How much is that doggy in the window?'" —Elvis Costello “She’s influential to every modern female singer, whether they know about her or not. She broke down those walls in the beginning, when it was the hardest to do.” —Jack White “There’s an authenticity in her voice that conjures up a world and a very distinct and particular place in time.” —Bruce Springsteen“As you look up the history of your roots in music, you don’t find a lot of women. But Wanda Jackson was right there, at the beginning of it….“I learned to sing rock ’n’ roll by listening to Wanda Jackson, but I learned about country music from her, too.” —Cyndi Lauper“Wanda Jackson, an atomic fireball of a lady, could have a smash hit with just about anything.” —Bob Dylan

Known as the queen of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson combined grit with glamour to set a new template for country music's "girl singers" of the 1950s. With urging from Elvis, she soon showed the world that girls could rock, too! Wanda landed more than 30 singles on the country and pop charts between 1954 and 1974. She is a multiple Grammy nominee, a recipient of the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, and a 2009 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.   Scott B. Bomar is an award-winning writer who has authored or co-authored several books, including Southbound: An Illustrated History of Southern Rock; The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and California Country; and The "Odessey": The Zombies in Words and Images. I read a lot of entertainment autobiographies, and I am a huge fan of the early days of rock and roll. Ms. Jackson is indeed one of the founders of rock and roll, and I was thrilled to see her inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She tells her life story in a pleasant, honest manner. She doesn't try to hide the fact that she had a great talent and drive from an early age, but she also appears to be a very down to earth person. I didn't feel like she was being dishonest in her story. She was never overbearing in any of the parts, and she managed to keep my interests for the entire book. As a rule, I am not interested in a person's religious beliefs. However, she even kept me interested in this part of her life. I found her to be interesting, funny and honest. I really liked this book.

This is a very nice story about a very nice and talented lady. She has been performing since she was a child and is still stays pretty busy even though she is now in her 80's. Her story is about having a goal and being highly motivated to achieve her goal. She had a lot of support from her parents and other performers she met along the way. She has certainly endured the test of time. I had no idea that she was popular in so many foreign countries. Through the most difficult of times, Wanda Jackson kept singing.

I've read a lot of famous musicians' autobiographies lately, and this is one of the best. For the most part their childhood isn't that interesting, but Wanda's is - it's fun to follow her earliest musical experiences and see how her career grew with help from her family. It's well-written, and her unique voice comes through.

Wanda is the Queen and I read anything I can gets my hands on about her, so what's better than her auto-biography? My area of research is women in rockabilly music, so I didn't learn anything new, but it is great to read it in her own words.

This is one of the best biographies I've ever read. I recommend this even if you are not very familiar with Wanda Jackson.

Wanda Jackson was the trailblazer for women in Rock 'n' Roll. Her autobiography is a terrific look at her amazing life and career.

What a great book! It is very interesting, informative, and fun to read. No matter if you're interested in country, rock, or rockabilly music you need to read this book.Keith

Great biography, Wanda Jackson is a Legend!

I love reading history books, as long as they were not approved by the Texas Board of Education(because then they aren't worth a damn, apparently). However, I understand that not everyone shares my love of historical events. A lot of history books are pretty dry, at best. At worst, they are downright boring. This is not that kind of a book. This is one of the coolest history books I've ever read. I had originally bought it for my nephew, but once I actually started perusing the pages I realized that his mother would have a massive coronary if she saw the language. Even if said language adds to the ambience. The author, Ben Thompson, runs a site called [...]. He searches the history books for badasses. Not all of the badasses are men, nor are they all from the 20th century, which is refreshing. Thompson relates the stories with gusto, like a teenaged/college aged boy would describe a videogame boss fight to his friends--and this generates interest. The stories of these people maintain that interest. The humor seals the deal. There may be a bit of 'embellishment' in relating the stories, but this doesn't detract in the least. And each chapter is only at most five pages long--perfect for a short attention span or when you only have a minute here or there to read. So of course, I read the whole thing in a couple of hours, with a pause here and there. This might be a good book for a person who doesn't read a lot to improve their reading skills with a high interest book. It would be perfect for a reader who has trouble with maintaining attention when reading. In short, this is a perfect book to encourage reading in older teenaged boys. The language is really the only thing I think that a parent might take issue with, but since the profanity is a part of the schtick and not specifically gratuitous, I wouldn't have a problem if my 15 year old decided to read it.

Put simply, this is a book where the author writes about 40 badasses from history, and he does so with colorful language, pop references and plenty of humor. I enjoyed it thoroughly not only because it was entertaining, but also because I learned a lot about various historical figures and events. I found myself doing quite a bit of historical research. The fact that various Sikh badasses showed up in the book was an even bigger bonus. I fully intend to purchase the second book he wrote. This isn't for everyone -- in fact I would guess that he's around my age (born 1972) based on his pop references -- but the best thing about this book is that you can simply check out his website [...]and know whether or not you will like the book, because they're the same writing style. 9/10.

Just a simple note to let you know that how fun this book is. It's not fancy reading, and you won't be a scholar of history when your done, but it reads like a what I imagine an old Navy Vet might talk like or perhaps a real cowboy from Texas telling you the story over a rye-whiskey! It's FUN to read, and since it's my poo-break book when I come home in the evenings, my girl often asks me through the door what is so funny as I am constantly laughing out loud, and I say "What a clever writer, he certainly has a way with descriptions!"Like I said, it's not definitive in a research of history like manner, thought most end of chapters have little bonus "bet you didn't know" snippets which is true, I most often didn't! Still, entertaining and quick reads make for the prefect Christmas present also as I know a guy who would find this book right up his alley!Have Fun!

Ben Thompson's "Badass" isn't just hilarious, it's educational!Never before have I laughed out loud so obnoxiously while learning about the same material I used to fall asleep to during long, drawn out, monotone lectures by professors with less personality than Ben Stein. This is the kind of history book I would've loved back in high school, and it even helped inspire my own humorous history blog. Badass spawned two other volumes: 'The Birth of a Legend' and 'Ultimate Deathmatch' (both of which I also highly recommend). This one highlights many key figures from Ancient Egypt to World War II including but not limited to: Leonidas, Napoleon, and Vlad the Impaler! Now what are you waiting for? Add it to that shopping cart! I'm waiting... any day now...-Erik Slader-(EpikFAILs.com)

By the first part of this book I was growing weary of the repetitive superlatives, but overall an interesting way to present historical figures, many of whom I'd never heard. I'm a big history buff, but prefer to read a bit more on each subject. However, if you've got a young person who doesn't like history, this is a great way to grab their attention and let them know it's not all "boring."

This book (as well as the others by Ben Thompson) are that amazing combination of history, excitement, swearing, and general awesomeness that makes my 6th grader UNABLE to put the book down. Talk about getting a kid to LOVE reading... holy smokes. Our copies of Ben's earlier books are all ratty (and one has lost its cover) because my son has read them so many times. This book arrived TODAY and he's already nearly finished it. This is a page turner and super fun to read. Plus it's packed with real history - the short stories about real battles get my kid interested and then he's off doing more research on the same topics. What a way to encourage reading! There is a bit of swearing in the book (and some rude jokes - mostly involving crushed testicles, etc), but nothing super offensive. I think it's perfect for middle schoolers and up. (And also for adults - my husband and I both love these books!) Ben has done a nice job of having a mixture of people in history, so there are badass females too. I appreciate him giving equal badass opportunities! All in all, this is a super fun book to read. This is the perfect book for "reluctant readers" who may find most books dull. THIS BOOK IS NOT BORING!! :) Our whole family loves it. Lots of excitement, lots of humor, lots of history.

I love Paul Butler and greatly respect his work as an attorney, but this is a subpar piece of writing; and I'm surprised that he wrote it, given how outstanding he is in all other parts of his legal career. Citations are too few and far-between to make it good legal writing; large swaths of the book are conclusions presented as arguments, only sometimes having any support whatsoever, and oftentimes the support given is purely anecdotal; and the book overall is a strange combination of nonfiction and memoir. I wish his editor encouraged him to pick between the two. As a piece of writing, it's just very hard to get through--and that's coming from a reader who very much enjoys reading texts in this field. This is a good example of the exact antithesis of a page-turner, which is unfortunate because, again, the topics are so important.I did learn a thing or two from the book, but few (if any) of the arguments Butler makes are particularly novel. The chapter that comes closest to presenting something new is that on the connection between criminal justice and hip-hop culture; though that part begins with an exciting few pages, the argument does not come across as fully developed. I think he could have gone deeper on that thesis. (It's odd that he made that argument the thesis--and title--of his book, too, given that it occupies such a small space in the book itself.)If you're looking for something good on the problems of the criminal justice system, I'd try Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow" instead (or other beautifully written and formidably reasoned texts like James Forman Jr.'s "Locking Up Our Own").

Fortunately C.W. Day has given a detailed review of Butler's book. That helps a lot, because I'm having trouble knowing where to start in expressing appreciation for it. What I want to know is why there are so few reviews? This is important! It should have a wide audience. So why did I give it only four stars rather than five? Because I take issue with the statement on page 124, "Punishment should be the point of criminal justice, but it should be limited by the impact it has on the entire community." Everything he's said in the book would lead me to assume he has a different goal. As an enthusiast for the Restorative Practices movement, I believe, and I infer that he really believes as well, that punishment may serve a goal of individual and social justice, but is not a goal in itself. That takes us right back to the damage done by the focus on retribution, inflicting pain for pain, which has led us to the "Get tough on crime" thing in the first place. As he so aptly points out, getting "tough on crime" is nothing of the sort. It's "getting tough on criminals," which, as he points out, has the effect of increasing crime. On page 19 he says, "There is a tipping point at which crime increases if too many people are incarcerated. The United States is past this point. If we lock up fewer people, we will be safer." This point is elaborated on p. 25 by his pointing out that "Now, the United States has the largest rate of incarceration in the history of the free world."Interestingly, evidence from sources other than Butler's book suggests that the rate of imprisonment is directly related to the decision to privatize prisons. I recall a friend of mine - a former state administrator of probation - saying at the time, "Just watch. The rate of imprisonment will go up now that private ownership has to fill the beds." Toward the end of his book, Butler reflects on the advantage of alternatives like electronic monitoring. I was interested that he noted that these devices are produced by private enterprise. Given the importance of economics in our culture, perhaps this will be an opportunity to increase the involvement of private enterprise in a positive way - sort of the equivalent of green industry.I learned so much from this book, some of which hit me like, "Of course, I knew that." His summary account of the effects of excessive incarceration makes a lot of sense when elaborated. Here I'd like just to list the points, referring you to his pages 32-33.* The "replacement effect:" the vacancy created by imprisonment gets filled by someone else.* Mass incarceration disrupts families.* It changes the way people think about crime - young men expect that at some point they'll do time, a kind of rite of passage that reduces respect for the law.* It's extremely difficult for a released felon to find employment.* And it's very expensive: (p.34) Sixty billion dollars is the amount that the United States spends on prisons and jails every year. This does not include the costs of police and the courts.Again, in the class of "Of course, I should have known that," (see pages 112-118) "Like other politicians, prosecutors pander to voters. In the majority of jurisdictions, this means promising to get tough on crime, which translates to locking more people up. There are few risks to being overaggressive - even when prosecutors cross the line. Since 1976, approximately 120 people who received death sentences were later found to be innocent. In all these cases, prosecutors were responsible for these wrongful convictions. The number of prosecutors who have been disciplined for these egregious miscarriages of Justice? Zero. By contrast, the line prosecutor who goes against the "get tough" ethos too forcefully not only risks losing her job but also risks causing her boss to lose his.But what was really new to me was the option of Jury Nullification. (p.61) "When a jury disregards the evidence and acquits an otherwise guilty defendant, it has practiced jury nullification. The jury is saying that the law is unfair, either generally or in this particular case. The jury's decision is totally legal - indeed, the practice of jury nullification is a proud part of U.S. constitutional history."I'm trying to avoid getting carried away, but my next-to-the-last point is to refer to his two goals on p. 120. "Let's say we have two goals. First, we seek to reduce incarceration substantially. Our specific goal here is to return the United States to incarcerating "only" 1,750,000 people rather than the current 2.3 million. Our second objective is a major reduction in racial disparity in incarceration. The numerical goal here is to reduce the current eight-to-one black-white disparity to three-to-one, which is closer to the average black-white disparities in other measure of economic and social well-being"Finally, to get personal. One hopes that the disparity won't be decreased by increasing the number of "white" prisoners. I have seen the broad effects on the imprisonment of one (white) prisoner I care about. Having been on medical leave from work for a year in treatment for Hepatitis C, the latter six months of which consisted of treatment with interferon/Rebetol and Trzadone to treat depression caused by the interferon, he had completed the interferon injections but continued the Trzadone and had been back at work for two weeks. On a Sunday afternoon he consumed four beers between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. As he reports, "My last conscious memory was about 5:30. From that point on I was in a chemically induced blackout. My next real memory is coming to in the emergency room in ... and being informed that I had caused a crash that had ended the life of two children."After release from the hospital and three weeks at home, he admitted himself to a hospital, suffering deep depression over the lives he had taken. He was not allowed to communicate to the family his deep grief. [The latter prohibition is, I believe, part of victim protection.] Advised by his lawyer to plead guilty, he was sentenced to 12 years, six for each child. At no point did he do anything but accept full responsibility for his youthful behavior that led to the Hepatitis C or for the accident. On the other hand, the judge was never presented with the information about his medical condition. Nor was the judge aware that he had no priors, confusing his record with that of his son.At a future time, another lawyer prepared a brief making those two things clear. The Judge refused to review it. He has now been in prison since 2005, during which time his marriage has ended in divorce, the son with the priors fell off the wagon, his elderly mother, single and living alone, has suffered major health problems, from open-heart surgery to back surgery to near blindness, and many things in between, rendering her incapable of leaving home on her own. In prison he has become an instructor in the restorative practices course, earned enough credits to be close to an Associates degree, and contributed his knowledge to the prison's computer system. And at his most recent hearing he was denied parole.p.s. He was not allowed to accept the book I sent him for his birthday, even though it was shrink-wrapped and sent directly from Border's Books. Nor was he allowed to receive a self-addressed stamped envelope from me so he could send me a letter.Yes, I think this is a perfect example of the futility of incarceration. This man is in no way a violent person, trying his best to care for his family from the confines of the prison. There is nothing to be learned about accepting guilt or "going straight." If nothing else, electronic monitoring would make it possible for him to care for his mother.I hope this latter story is acceptable to the author as an example of the points he is making. At the very least, I hope it's clear that I strongly urge that more people read the book.

This book addresses a question I have had for a long time: Why, with all the might and power of the U.S. has there been hardly a dent made in the war on drugs. When I saw the interview of Paul Butler on C-S[an/Book T.V., I was intrigued by both the views and the research of the author. I thought there would be answers to my questions in his work, and I was not disappointed. The sad truth is that the "fight against drugs" has an underlying purpose, which today is beginning to be openly discussed: the deliberate decimation of a target population through addiction, incarceration (often for the financial benefit of others) destruction of communities, prison release with life penalties that deny jobs, voting rights, ability to meet responsibilities to family and community, and then re-addiction--a vicious circle. Drugs are a multi million dollar business; a stone that kills more than one bird. The truth, however, is finally being exposed. According to the author, hip-hop, which many people don't understand, but may be happy to learn about, has answers that make sense.

This book was extremely worthwhile and provided a different vantage point from other books I had read on the topic. A black former prosecutor tells what is wrong with a justice system that seeks out and penalizes black drug dealers and users, while white dealers and users are mostly ignored. He gives statistics and examples to illustrate how the system is discriminatory and why we should all care. He explains the negative effects on the whole society and proposes alternate methods of dealing with non-violent offenders. He even suggests things that individuals can do to improve justice. Another book I would highly recommend that deals with the same subject is "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander.
