However, this did not detract from my enjoyment of the first. Bolitar, an ex-college and NBA standout switched to being a sports agent and part-time private eye after a crippling injury forced him to drop out of NBA competition. Harlan Coben, an accomplished and award-winning mystery writer ably develops believable plots with compelling characters. Myron Bolitar manifests humor, striking good looks and a magnetic personality that turns women's heads and makes men sit up and take notice. Myron's best friend and business partner, Windsor Horne Lockwood III, better known as, Win, is the wealthy intellect of the company who loves to kick ass and kill if necessary. The beautiful Esperanza, Myron's secretary, once women's national professional wrestling champion who fought under the name, Pocohontas, adds humor and organization to Myron's outer office. Myron lands his first big client, rookie quarterback, Christian Steele. All goes well until Steele's fiancee, Kathy Culver, turns up missing. When no trace of her is found after 18 months she is presumed dead and law enforcement stops looking. Enters the gorgeous and charming Jessica Culver, Kathy's older sister and Myron's former live-in girlfriend. Jessica convinces Myron to help locate her little sister who she believes is still alive. Soon the sisters' father, and Kathy's ex-roommate turn up dead. The story is a multi-plotted page turner that keeps the reader on his toes. The ending is typical Coben—lengthy and perplexing. Deal Breaker is an action packed great starter for the Bolitar series. I give the novel a strong 4-star rating.

The Bolitar series has never let me down. I enjoy reading Harlan Coben's books - there's always a number of twists and turns in them, though this one seemed more predictable than some of the others in the series. This is a quick read and enjoyable. Was always wondering how Myron ended up with Jessica - it's here in the first novel. It's no wonder that Jessica has a thing for Myron given his work in helping here find out what happened to her sister (don't want to give away too much).

DEAL BREAKER is the first novel in the Myron Bolitar series, but I have to admit, I didn't read this book until recently.Which turns out to be a good thing, because had this been the first Harlan Coben novel I'd ever read, I'd have never picked up another book by the same author again.Why?Because of the ending. Chapter 46, to be exact, in which there's a dialog between the main protagonist, Myron, and his sidekick, Win; a chapter and a dialogue that exists for the sole purpose of explaining the plot. Many thriller and mystery writers have to resort to this kind of dialogue, but if handled skillfully, it does not wake the reader from the fictive dream. Whereas the rest of the book was very meticulously thought out and carefully, and, indeed, skillfully written, this particular chapter was sloppy, rushed, and completely unbelievable.Where was his editor in all this?Were it not for Chapter 46, I'd have given this book four stars. It was well written and well thought out. I'd have taken away a star because the plot was over-contrived, and even without the infamous, and bafflingly atrocious Chapter 46, the ending was still not handled the way I would have liked. Coben does a great job in his other books, believe me, and if I'm so tough on this particular novel, it's because I've grown accustomed to--okay, spoiled by--a much higher caliber of exposition.Authors are humans too. Even the best of them. Some books they write simply don't compare with the rest. Some are leagues above, some lightyears below. They are the statistical outliers in the writer's long list of published works.This novel might be important to some because it is the first in the series. If you are one of those readers, by all means, start off with few expectations, then go ahead and read DEAL BREAKER. Otherwise, do yourself and the gifted Mr. Coben a favor--give this one a miss.

I enjoyed this first Myron Bolitar mystery. Bolitar is the kind of competent, smart-mouthed character that I like as the hero of a mystery. I have rather more mixed feelings about his partner Win who seems to me a little amoral or sociopathic for my taste.Bolitar is a sports agent negotiating a contract for a talented quarterback when the story begins. He and the quarterback have a connection. The quarterback was the fiance of a young woman who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The young woman was the sister of a woman Bolitar had a romance with and who he hasn't gotten over.Now the woman is back in town because her father was killed and she is sure that there must be some connection between her father's death and her sister's disappearance. Bolitar and Win begin investigating and are soon deep into the porn trade and the seedy side of negotiating contracts for pro athletes.Bolitar is quick with a quip and dogged in his pursuit of the truth about what happened to Kathy Culver. I liked the twists and turns in the plot. The murderer came as a surprise to me but, looking back, I can see some hints that I overlooked as I was reading.I am eager to read more of the books in this series and will have to add them to my wishlist. It looks like I have nine more novels to read in order to catch up.

David Powlison, MDiv, PhD, is Executive Director of CCEF and a counselor with over thirty years of experience. Such a great book on anger, engaging and excellently written

My two year loves this book.

There is always a need for biblical counseling in the church. Whether it is a couple trying to save their marriage or parents dealing with their wayward teenager, the ministry of biblical counseling serves as a guide to counsel from God’s Word. Married couples and parents need it. Teenagers ought to heed it. But what about younger kids? Oftentimes, the scope of biblical counseling seems to apply to only adults and teenagers. Yet, as Christians who believe the Bible applies to all of life for all stages of life, doesn’t God’s Word give direction and counsel for children too? After these incidents, Papa Squirrel realizes his wrongful response of anger and uses it as a lesson to teach his family from the “Great Book” on how anger arises out of each of their hearts because of what they want and why anger does not produce the right and good life God wants them to have. He shows them from the “Great Book” that when they get angry, they need to apologize and ask for forgiveness and they can be forgiven because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross for sinners. Jax's Tail Twitches: When You Are Angry is one of three new releases in the Good New For Little Hearts series from New Growth Press and CCEF. As a member of a church that is very committed to Biblical Counseling I was very intrigued by this new series. CCEF has produced many quality resources for adults that have been very beneficial to me and countless others. The idea that these same truths would now be made available to kids in story book form had me very excited for their release.  The series brings gospel truth to children by "focusing on an animal family's real-life issues, encouraging young readers toward a growing relationship with Jesus in the midst of challenging circumstances."Jax's Tail Twitches begins with Jax the squirrel reacting in anger because his brother Caspian trips him and beats him to breakfast. At breakfast we are introduced to the rest of Jax's family and shortly will see all of them, except baby Jolie, react to different situations in anger. While collecting nuts for the winter Papa gets angry at a neighbor who is taking nuts from his tree. Caspian continues to pick on Jax and Jax reacts in anger again. During all of the feuding Mama forgets about dinner that is cooking and after discovering that it is burned she is angry too! Jax recognizes that the entire family seems to get angry when they don't get what they want. This leads Papa to recognize everyone's anger and address it with Scripture and prayer. Each family member then ask for forgiveness from the others and Papa also reconciles with his neighbor. The book closes with a section called Helping Your Child With Anger. Here the author gives 9 points from Scripture to further discuss with your children. This is where the biblical counseling influence of CCEF is most clearly seen. This section definitely turns the book into a resource to be used over and over again with your children. There is also a Back Pocket Bible Verse section with Bible verses for kids to carry with them for when they are angry. This is a very nice addition to the book. The illustrations of the book are also very well done. Jax's Tail Twitches is a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and churches to connect the truths of Scripture with different struggles that children will face. The writing style is engaging, the illustrations are wonderfully done, and the biblical truths are clearly communicated. I would highly recommend this book to any Christian that regularly interacts with young children. I received a copy of this book from New Growth Press in exchange for an honest review.Â

I was first licensed in 2005 but don't have much on-the-air experience. I recently returned on the air after a hiatus and felt like I needed some additional guidance. This book fit the bill. It has a lot of info based on the author's experience; it is not, however, a comprehensive operating manual and is not intended to be. I rated it 5 stars based on its intended audience.The book covers types of equipment needed according to one's budget. The author also discusses various operating modes and operating etiquette. He does not get very technical and there is no discussion of electronics or complex math. The writing style is easy to read and the author occasionally throws in a bit of humor. The only negative for me is that I thought the book was somewhat pricey compared with the others I looked at but the author is, after all, sharing many years of experience. After reading the book, I felt like it helped me and I would buy it again.

This book is very clear and immediately useful. Buck’s style is entertaining and studded with memorable anecdotal images. Realistic dialogue is included to exemplify how (and how not) to proceed while making contacts. He covers two dozen topics and nearly 40 subtopics including modes, choosing equipment, grounds, antennas, operating strategies, propagation, QSO etiquette, confirming contacts, and much more. Buck is an insightful and efficient writer. Through the economy of his language, he explains concepts quickly and directly. He avoids whimsical filler. Footnotes explain terms that are unique to amateur radio. This book continues to be a ready reference in my shack. I also bought his book on DX and his prep book for the Extra ticket. As the best mentors do, he shares his knowledge with all by way of practical examples and applicable guidance.

It’s was written in easy way to understand and make it’s easier to go over the basics. If you’re a new one this is what you need to understand must of the terminology and procedures.

Very easy to read and understand. Covers everything you need to get started in HF from equipment to how to make the contacts. It is not so technical that you are lost for he explains everything. I am so happy I was given this as a gift after I earned my Armature Extra class radio lisence. a great reference to use both for new and "old" Hams. Very easy read. Enjoyed the personal experiences. Eating due to repetition from DX book seemed laborious. Highly recommend for review and fine tuning ones skills .

What a neat book! Great rhymes, and tells the story of Washington's dental problems in the way a Child will understand. My son would have liked it before he was 5, but he was started on "history" early. Wish I would have had it back then. I highly recommend the book, and your Child will be learning history in a fun way and not even know it.

My students always walk away from this read aloud with a new found appreciation for oral hygiene! This book is entertaining and interesting from beginning to end. It tells how George Washington lost his teeth. My kindergartners LOVE this as a read aloud, and always have a bunch of questions at the end. There is a great timeline in the book, and a picture of George Washington's fake teeth. My students are mesmerized from beginning to end. Your students will never again forget to brush their teeth!

Bought this book for my friend's kids (she's five, the oldest is seven). They loved it! (Well, except the six week old, but she wasn't so interested...) It was adorable and hilarious. I got them the book because the five year old didn't want to brush his teeth one day, and I warned him that George Washington didn't have any teeth at all. He didn't believe me, so I went hunting for a book to show him. They actually made me read it three times in a row before they would move on to anything else. It tells a great story, it rhymes, and it lets the kids count along with the number of teeth he has left! I couldn't have been happier.

This is one of my daughter's favorite books. She went through a very long American Revolution phase and this book figured heavily. But... it is gross! I'm a bit of dental wimp so the graphic, albeit cartoon, pictures of 18th century dental techniques were pretty hard to take! The text is a poem though and reads well. Good info at the back about the real story too - since the poem takes a few liberties. Definitely makes one thankful for modern dentistry, however uncomfortable it still is...

I am a school counselor and used this book in one of my lessons. I enjoyed the story as much as the students did. They loved the counting of the teeth and the rhythm of the book. The story of George Washington is told in such a whimsical way. Anything to get kids interested in history works for me! The illustrations in the book were great, but the section in the back with real pictures and more textbook facts were a great addition to the book.

An interesting new perspective on George Washington. It makes him seem more human to children. Young children are intrigued to have the myth of wooden teeth squelched. Ther book provides a historical timeline in the back. This is a great book for children of ALL ages. Even I, an older child and teacher, learned some things. I had no idea our first president was so obsessed with his teeth and that he had such an active role in the solutions to his dental problems. Highly recommended.

The illustrations are just fabulous! Am a retired history teacher and welcome the chance to teach my 6 yr. old grandson about our first president. Am sure he will love this book.

He's a hero with a hardly heroic problem...his teeth are falling out! My boy and I enjoy this story of the man behind the Legend, struggling with his teeth as he struggles with the English. Comical pictures make the tooth loss tragic yet not uncomfortably squeamish for the grown-ups in the room. The timeline at the end of the story provides excellent details for continued conversations about George Washington and his teeth for the curious. Recommended!

I appreciated the honesty of Deborah Copagen Kogans biography of her early work as a photo journalist and her candor in describing her life and loves along the way. She seems to have a strong idea about who she is and takes the negative experiences in her life and unlike so many of us she learns and grows from them. I heard her interviewed on NPR about her latest book when she reference this book which led me to purchase it. Her views on how women are viewed in a male dominated field like war correspondence and photography echoed themes I had just read in Cheryl Sandberg's book Lean In. More people need to expose themselves as honestly as Deborah has here. I found it courageous.

Really enjoyed reading shutter babe!

The author tells a good story but not sure how much is absolutely true. Did she really almost throw a rabbi down a flight of stairs?? Her guiding star of doing good and the situations she was in were amazing and worth the read but I didn't walk away loving the book.

I think I expected to much from this book. It seems like at least once a chapter she has to bring in some story about who she had sex with and why she was taken advantage of. Reminds me of my ex wife, while we were married.. Always the victim. I think I was expecting a lot of dramatic war photography stories, not love stories.

This is an intriguing look into the life of a professional photographer who went everywhere from the caves of Afghanistan with the mujaheddin to the Red Square of Moscow when a coup attempted to oust Gorbachev. Her stories are as captivating as her photographs.

Reads like a self-centered term paper

Shutterbabe: Adventures in Love and War Having read a good portion of the reviews listed, I am left pondering whether I read the same book, Shutterbabe, and whether another review would be helpful. I must because DC Kogan has, as an artist, provided me with very much needed insight into my marriage of 18 years, and a fellow photographer, Christian, demanded that I post it so that he might read it. I first heard of this book by the late Bill Jay in his column in LensWork magazine (Jan-Feb 2005 (56), p.84) . He highly recommended it, so I put it on my reading list, but never got around to actually procuring a copy. I think I was put off by the title. When I finally did so, the book agitated me to a point of insomnia and hyperactivity. An effect that Kierkegaard described and its therapy prescribed: stop everything until one sorts it out. Kogan is a highly intelligent and artistic woman. Her provenance is impressive: trained by Christopher James (see The book of alternative photographic processes 2nd ed, 2009; p.218) and mentored by Gilles Peress (he of Magnum fame). In her junior year at Harvard, she begins what is considered today traditional photography (film: developed, stop bathed, and fixed [by which she delineates the broad sections of her book]). Before graduating she makes portraits of boorish and offensive men who accost her with sexually-charged propositions ("Shooting back") and of ecdysiasts in a local strip club. She recognizes her camera as both a weapon and ticket for entry. As Helmut Newton suggests, a photographer who does not admit that he is a voyeur is a liar. But Kogan is more than this; she is an anthropologist trying to figure out the male gender (being the elder of four sisters) and a philosopher engaged in both epistemology and the pursuit of "ontological rootedness," to quote Simon May (Love: a history, 2011; p.6) in order "to find a home for our life and being." She is also a performance artist and her experiences make up this book which she categorizes as a "love poem" to her husband, Paul Kogan. To understand this book, I believe one must start here: a love poem, not a self-aggrandizing autobiography, as some of her harshest critics suggest. In her nascent sexuality, she discovers that men live in a different world and are motivated by different goals. This greatest of mysteries inspires repeated and ardent study. She learns, early on, that they speak the language of physical sexuality--in utero, a baby boy receives a jolt of testosterone that changes the verbal center of his brain for life. As the reader will learn that she is a polyglot, it should not surprise that she attempts to learn this language as well. But, there are dangerous misunderstandings and missteps--this can never be her mother tongue (see "Aidan" who rapes her and "Gabe" ["hero of God"] who fathers a child that she aborts but whom he wanted. She loved Gabe and also "Matthew" ["gift of God"], the latter scorning her for a woman approved of by his family [this is also a foreshadowing of the husband she is yet to meet]). She enters into the world of men, as the majority of photojournalists, at least at the beginning of the end of the 20th century, are male. She states that women are cursed and in a surprising show of defiance demands that the Afghan mujahideen make her into a man. They do, at least on the outside, but her catamenia continues, of course, preventing successful deception. So too do the men who take advantage of her stature (5 feet two inches and a svelte 108 pounds) and unfortunate decisions. There is "Pascal" ["Easter child"] who beats her and "Sean" ["God is gracious"] who is a sadist. The next man she meets is the concierge of the hotel where "Sean" is staying. He is a self-righteous prick who offers her no comfort, in a time of great distress, even if, at least partly, her own doing. He and another unnamed man throw her out. As Sherlock Holmes observes in the Sign of Four, "while the individual man is an insoluble puzzle, in the aggregate he becomes a mathematical certainty." n2-n+2=x, so simple, yet so complicated with an infinite number of variables, as she recognizes and yet, a "mathematical certainty." Her travels to disparate corners of the world, and their assigned time zones, leave her in a vertiginous state of homelessness and jet lag. Her life, like this, is not going to assist her in developing an "ontological rootedness." It was at this point that I had to deal with my own angst where words (both nouns and verbs) were failing me. Kogan is about three years younger than I am and while she was traveling around the world, I was working as an intern and resident in internal medicine. At one point, there was an obit page where half the names were all my patients who had succumbed despite intensive care (my care!) and a botched bone marrow biopsy that I endured without any anesthetic, as a research guinea pig. And many a failed relationship. The juiciest gossip about me surrounded an off the cuff comment from a fellow resident who questioned if I had slept on top; this was not an observation of sexual activity but rather of our sleeping arrangements as the call room contained a bunk bed and I gave her the bottom bunk, as she is short, but not much shorter than I. Shortly thereafter, I moved to another town and after an inauspicious introduction, met the woman who would become my wife. The marriage almost did not occur. The issues surrounded a deceit eventually disclosed and an obtuse inability to tell me her plans for a career. The small yet bitter seed of discontent was to be nurtured. Why had my wife married me? Why does DC Kogan marry Paul ["small or humble"]. For Kogan, the performance art, or experiment, is coming to an end. She has seen the good, or partial good, in some men, Doru and also "Ray" ["protecting hands"] who carried her into his tent, not for sexual gratification but for her comfort while Africa rained. She found him mostly wet the next morning. I was never a "Sean" but I sure could be a self-righteous prick. Now tell me, which is worse? It is when she meets Paul that she finds the right one at the right time at the right place doing the right thing. She has her "ontological rootedness" and this performance is over ("Shutterbabe is dying"). I believe that she writes this book as a testimony to the completion of her overarching work: she has indeed found her "love and her savior" in her husband, as she testifies in the last line of the book (read the acknowledgments--it even helps sort out which names have been changed; nothing like having a baby and exploring the meanings of names to guide one in choosing names for names that must be changed, unless I read too much into it-and I probably have). I would trust that most, either men or women, would not be compelled to explore these questions to such an extreme and then present the findings in such a trenchant and comprehensive oeuvre. And as an infectious diseases physician who treats sexually transmitted diseases on a weekly basis, I can hardly condone her approach and technique (but was heartened to learn she escaped unscathed from an HIV scare and understands the importance of the condom for safety; of course an interval of six months, and not two years, is all that is necessary for HIV testing in her described situation. I trust too that she has been tested for Hepatitis C given her history of the use of cocaine). But I would offer my gratitude to this author who has helped me to understand in a profound way how my own woman views me: her love and savior; I conclude that the reticence of my wife was less deceit and more incomprehension--why keep working on the equation when the solution has been found after all? To be able to untie this Gordian knot after 18 years is joyous. Q.E.D.DC Kogan shares her life with us and in so doing provides a definition for true love, from the perspective of a woman to her man, in an utterly convincing (as a philosophical argument) and elegant (as art) way. This is a book that describes a small time frame of great upheaval with expected suffering and unexpected commiseration, some of the issues that photojournalists faced prior to the ability to upload their images, and the life and events of one woman. But, it is, ultimately, a love poem, derived from her performance art, and so should be broadly appealing, especially given the quality of this work. Highly recommended, especially for men--perhaps a month before their anniversary--that they might truly appreciate the effort and decisions a woman must make to achieve "ontological rootedness" with a man.

As a photographer myself, this is a compelling look into the world of war photojournalism and the difficulties and dangers involved. A behind-the-scenes look not only of the actual shooting (guns and cameras), but of the business side of being a freelance photojournalist. As a man, it's an interesting look into how a woman sees the world and the men around her in a very male-centric environment.I found the recounting of her various relationships a comfortable counterbalance to the gritty in-your-face reality of the news she was reporting with her camera.All in all an informative and entertaining book that I thoroughly enjoyed.
