However, there’s one aspect to contemporaries that I am a sucker for and that is the real life and real issues brand of contemporary novels. These novels can best be described using authors like Jay Asher, Ellen Hopkins and Christa Desir. These books involve the real difficult parts of life that people seem to want to push under the rug. That’s why I was immediately interested in The V-Word, because of the attention it calls to something that’s generally hushed up. Even better about The V-Word is that it’s not a fiction book about real life but it’s a nonfiction book featuring real stories from real people about their experiences with this topic.Sex and virginity is such a loaded topic when it comes to young adults. Often times in high school if you’re a girl and you have sex, you’re automatically considered a slut. However at the same time you could be a girl and not have sex and you’d be labeled a prude. Now if it’s a guy who’s having sex, he’d probably be congratulated and a guy who’s not having sex might be the butt of all the jokes. The V-Word brings to attention the different situations that every person goes through when they have their first sexual experience. It shows you the good, the bad, the sad, the happy, and the unexpected.The V-Word is very important because of it’s focus on showing that there really is no normal to this sort of thing. As teenagers we grow up seeing movies and TV shows where the first time is romantic and sweet and perfect, just how we imagined and this becomes something that can be harmful to our psyche. We go into things expecting this grand thing but something else entirely happens and we’re uncomfortable and don’t know what to do. Some of the stories in The V-Word tell how the unexpected things happened and how you can deal with them.Another great part about The V-Word is that it shows us the different types of sexual experiences between different types of people. These stories are all very LGBTQ friendly with multiple authors sharing their personal experiences that are way outside of the norm that’s often presented to teenagers through either media or education. No one really teaches about gay sex or trans sex and so the stories in The V-Word that deal with this are ground-breaking in informing young people who identify with these categories how varied their experiences can be as well.The V-Word is very empowering. It teaches that the word virgin isn’t as important as the word voice. Once you find your voice, you can determine how and if you want your experience to happen. If you find your voice and don’t let the word virgin control you, you can find what you want and do what you want not just as it pertains to this experience, but also as it pertains to any and every other life experience.Each and every short story in The V-Word will mean something to you in one way or another. You will find yourself identifying with different things and different people. You might even find yourself relating to something that you didn’t expect. The knowledge that The V-Word bestows upon its readers is priceless. I think that this is a book that all teenagers should read. It can teach so many lessons to so many people and it can even just open a teen’s eyes if their education is lacking. This is an important experience and even though it doesn’t have to rule your life, it should still be given a semblance of significance because it has multiple potential negative outcomes if it’s not taken seriously.Review in Review:I really liked The V-Word. It’s a book that I think teenagers should read. Too often young people get a grand idea built up in their head about how something is supposed to turn out, but when reality hits and it happens, they’re not sure what to do. This book shows the vast variety of possible situations out there and it teaches how to be ready and different ways to handle it using real life experiences.

I first heard about this book on a podcast when the author was a guest. I have to say that this book and the author's message has been instrumental (and almost life-changing!) how I'm now guiding my teen daughter! The message that there should be no shame or "loss" with one's first time, and the fact that it certainly doesn't matter in what form (e.g., straight, gay, trans) one's first sexual experience is, is breathtakingly refreshing. And it's a HEALTHY attitude! The author drives this point home and keeps it relatable, especially for younger readers.I wish that I had received this book when I was a teen and I know it would have helped me have a healthier attitude in general about sex. When my dad found out I "lost" my virginity, he told me that he wouldn't punish me because I had "already lost enough." Wow. This book made me realize how wrong that was of my father and it has taught me how to approach conversations about sexuality in a loving and compassionate way with my teens. Life changing for all. I couldn't more highly recommend. Thank you, Ms. Keyser!

This collection of 17 stories is amazing. The names of some of them tell a lot: It Would Not Be an Understatement to Say I Knew Nothing; It's a Nice Day for a White Wedding; The Lion Poet and It's All in the Choosing, to name a few. Some very brave women trusted the author to tell their stories. I think she honored that trust.

Boring

While I like anthologies, for me I usually love a couple essays/stories, like a few, and skip a few. It just seems to happen when there is a mix of writing/authors. In this case ALL the stories were really strong ranging from 3 stars to 5 stars and I didn't feel the urge to skip any of the stories.The best part of this anthology is how different all the voices are, the stories. We are brought up with such a weight attached to virginity, to this idea of it being lost/taken one day and that being a monumental thing. The stories of these women and their first sexual experiences were all so different--marginalized groups were represented by far more than just one story--that regardless of whether you're reading this for information as someone looking to hand in your V-card or as someone who long ago got that card stamped it is a reminder of how different women are. We all come from different places, our brains are all filled with different thoughts, emotions, wants, ideas and as much as society might tell us what virginity means it is completely different to each individual.There were hilarious stories, a bit sad stories, honest stories--it read like a great group of friends each telling their first time story. And beyond that there's the getting to know and understanding yourself, body-image issues...And for anyone who might need or is looking for actual information the book ends with a lot of resources.

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom is one of my all-time favorite books. I was excited when I found this book as a way to introduce my children to her. I thought the authors did a great job in helping young children understand what an amazing woman she is!Corrie and her family lived in Holland. They helped the Jews escape the Nazis and were eventually caught. She and her sister were sent to live in a concentration camp. It was a difficult time and there were tears in our eyes as we read certain parts. One of the things that surprised me the most when I first read her story was her age--she was actually in her 50's when she was caught. Her story is filled with miracles, faith and forgiveness, and is one that will inspire people of all ages!

I purchased this book for my son after he finished the book about Brother Andrew in the same series (Christian Heroes: Then & Now). All the books in this series give kids a wonderful introduction and overview of the lives of those who have dedicated their lives to serving God.I had read The Hiding Place this year, and after discussing it with my family, my son told me he wanted to read it. I was a bit hesitant, since there were some parts of the book which might be a little traumatic or descriptive for a young reader. So I was thrilled to find Corrie ten Boom: Keeper of the Angels' Den.This book was perfect. It told the story of Corrie ten Boom in an age-appropriate, but still accurate manner. My son was amazed at all Corrie and her family did to help others, and all they were willing to give up in order to do what they felt God wanted them to do.I highly recommend this book, and others in the Christian Heroes series.

We've now read several of the books in this series, and have loved every one of them so far. This book is no different. We used this book as a read-aloud for my 2nd-grader, and both of us got so wrapped up in the story, that we set aside the rest of our schoolwork for several days so we could finish the story!This story, in particular, touches my heart. Ever since I was a child, I would think about the victims of the Holocaust any time I had a particularly bad day, just to remember how blessed I am to live in this day and age. These stories are helping my children, now, to realize how blessed we are--that our discomforts and disappointments are nothing compared to what so many other people have and are experiencing. The lesson in this story, "There is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper," still rings true today. I hope this book made a firm impression on my daughter, so that when she faces tough times, she will trust in the faithfulness of God and His love for her.

This book will inspire you and teach young and old that God can do extraordinary and marvelous things even in bleak and terrifying surroundings.Corrie Ten Boom was an ordinary watchmaker's daughter when her family was arrested for helping Jewish people escape the Nazi's. They were taken to prison and suffered greatly under the hands of their captors. Yet Corrie and her sister always looked towards God and where thankful for all of the blessings he gave them, such as a patch of blue sky, a hidden Bible, the women they read the Bible too. This book tells the story of Corrie and how she survived the war and went on to help others by telling them about God's love and forgiveness. Corrie learned a lot from her prison experience, but most of all, Corrie learned that by leaning on God, she can share God's love and forgiveness to all, even to her enemies and those who hurt her.

This magnificently written Christian biography book is perfect for a book report, particularly for a student who attends Christian private school or who is homeschooled (as my 13 year old son). Corrie ten Boom truly went through hell on earth just to satisfy God in Heaven; when it is my time to go, she is one of the many individuals I would love to meet when I get there! Should you read this book, prepare your heart (and perhaps a hankie). My opinion, not enough stars to rate it! :-)

all the books that i have read written by Ms. Ten Boom are inspirational and awe inspiring...the things that God did in and through her are amazing. What a beautiful woman of faith she was.

Inspiring and instructive about how totalitarianism works. Keeps your attention. The audible version was worth the extra few dollars. Very engaging and yet professionally done.

This was an informative book explaining the Pokagon’s relationship to Chicago.

This story is new to me, but Mr. Low weaves an authentic and interesting tale touching on history, law, urban studies, environmental perception and behavior, land, life, and culture, relating to Chicago and southwest Michigan that leaves me wanting to learn more. I like the kindle format as well and the copious hyperlinked footnotes and references make for an enjoyable and useful read.

This is a very unusual and valuable book for those interested in Chicago history or the urban Indian experience. The author is a scholar who also is a member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. The book includes well-researched essays about the ways that generations of Pokagan Potawatomi have related to Chicago, striving not to be assimilated or forgotten while also participating in the wider society of their own time and place.

I became a biblical skeptic some years ago and in my unbiased study of it; particularly the Old Testament, I began to come to the conclusion that the Hebrew "God" concept was developed out of some sort of political ambition. The Hebrew name for "God" in Genesis 1:1 is Elohim. This name denotes plurality and is used to describe the creator, as well as various idol gods and such. I came to the conclusion that there must be some sort of Hebrew pantheon that the average Sunday school teacher does not know about. Maria Mies is a Marxist feminist scholar who is renowned for her theory of capitalist-patriarchy, which recognizes third world women and difference. Wow. I'm really surprised that no one has reviewed this book either in support of it or against it. Even though this book is more than a quarter of a century old, the concepts within it are more relevant today than they were when Mies wrote this back in the mid 1980's. Mies predicted the impact of unrestrained capitalism (born in the wake of the Cold War) on the atomization of women from all socio-economic backgrounds and across all borders. Mies offers within this book, an in-depth analysis of a concept she has coined as the process of 'housewifization', where in capitalist institutions shape global policy and perception in order to exploit women in the role of laborers from the underdeveloped world, who produce non-prodcutive consumer goods for consumption by women living in the developed world, who are objectified by capitalist systems and mobilized as one unifying class of housewives as consumers of these goods and services. Mies also details the interplay between the advent of automation and technology within the production process and how these processes have played a role in the dehumanization of people and the destruction of our environment. Mies does invoke some Marxist ideology within her writing but with a gender twist, something that Marx did not acknowledge in his analysis of capitalism. This book is a must read for students of gender studies, history, economics, geography and politics.

This is a neglected classic by an eminent German political economist. Feminists who have focused on analyzing the cultural manifestations of patriarchy will find it an eye-opener as it explains feminist economics. Learn how women produce most of the world's food but are not allowed to accumulate a surplus on their wages, to own or manage more than a tiny fraction of the world's private land, and are the unpaid "base" of market economics with their subsistence, domestic, and reproductive labor. An inspiring writer with an important economic analysis.

"Patriarchy and Accumulation on a World Scale" answers EVERYTHING.How capitalism grew out of patriarchy, the "blind spot" of Marx that includes most of humanity, the invention of the housewife, how "first world" and "third world" women are two sides of the same fabric, violence against women, violence against subsistence workers, the new international male culture, body autonomy, how women's labor is rendered invisible, the failure of socialist states, the implications of technological advancement, and the increasing "housewification" of labor (which has unfolded exactly as she predicted in the ensuing 30 years).If that's not enough for one (elegantly written) book, Mies goes on to introduce a NEW THEORY OF LABOR which is stunning in its aptness. She also lays out a vision for women across the globe uniting against the international division of labor.I could hardly contain myself in the joy of having all these seemingly contradictory pieces of a horrible (patriarchal capitalist) puzzle finally aligned so succinctly in my head. In sum, this is the most important book I have ever read.My only critique of the book is Mies' theory of the evolution of patriarchy. It veers into biological determinism, while the same breath claiming to denounce biological determinism. It is perplexing, and I wish I could ask her to clarify her thinking directly. One of the top smartest and best books I've read in the last few years. She nails it. Accumulation is picking up at the expense of the world's women and the environment.

Agree with Emma, this may be the most important book I've ever read. I have a good-sized feminist library and cannot understand why it has taken me so long to finally find a summa of feminist theory that acknowledges that men and women have qualitatively different relations to nature based on female capacity to directly produce with their bodies vs male compensation by developing a predatory, parasitic mode of "production" based on appropriation, killing, and kidnapping. The source of male domination, she asserts, is the male monopoly on weapons. Mies has a sure grasp of Marxism and in particular demolishes the classical Marxist idea that women's work of propagation, subsistence labor (growing food and so on), housework, and working for low wages or in kind in the informal economy, is not productive labor. The old Marxist distinctions between reproductive and productive labor, production and consumption, and use and exchange fall apart when these bases of women's labor are brought back into the concept of production. In this sense Mies goes farther than any other Marxist feminists I have read, who will insist that "housework" or "domestic" labor be included, and may discuss subsistence unpaid labor such as work in family fields, but who will not attempt to draw in women's propagation of the species as production. Her concise discussions of the witch craze, Engels, the history of western colonization, coerced consumerism, and a devastating critique of capitalism are each woth a full book in another's hands. Her globalism is the defining and most valuable feature of the book. We finally see the full scope of patriarchy. She wrote in the full flower of anti-feminist postmodernism, in the 1980s, and seems to have been unaffected by its destructive impact on feminist theory. Highly recommended.
