This is heavy reading and takes time to absorb, but is well worth it. If you are not familiar w/the more conservative sects of Judaism, this is a good introduction, especially for those of us who have only a limited knowledge. It is spiritually enriching.

Incredible book, the Rogatchover is a holy man who is little known yet had a major impact on torah thought today. This book serves an incredible purpose and the author did a wonderful job. It's a little choppy but I think that's the nature of the person being discussed so it ties in well.

Not for the fainthearted and not for the laymen. If you toil in Torah than peeking into the life and teachings of thisTorah giant will reap you great rewards.

At last someone has seen fit to delineate the genius of Rabbi Josef Rosen, The Rogachover Gaon. His systematic analysis and the resultant framework allows for a coherent view of Torah. Using the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds with the Reshonim the Rogachover gave of 40,000 poskinim and resolved a number of machloches (disagreements) that have been outstanding for a long period. The book fails to tie all this up but is a great introduction to the Rogochover's ideas.

Those are his extremely cryptic and terse writing style, that he did not have a Yeshiva, and his lack of direct students.Contrast that with his contemporary Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik, whose 6 main students in turn created myriad Yeshivas and other students.The Rogatchover himself was a master of Talmud, all writings of Maimonides, and much more. This combined with his photographic memory and breathtaking analytical skills enabled him to show the complete unity of Torah. Schwartz provides many examples of his ability to connect many seemingly disassociated ideas and shows their symmetry.Schwartz also provides scores of examples of seemingly Talmudic contradictions, and how the Rogatchover is able to easily reconcile them.The book succeeds on numerous fronts. It provides and honest and respectable biography of the Rogatchover. More importantly, it shows how the Rogatchover was able to provide the equivalent of a unified field theory of all of Jewish thought.Schwartz does a marvelous job of bringing the Rogatchover’s worldview to English speaking readers. Let’s hope he has much more to come.

I am sure that in the print edition this book is worthy of four or five stars. Sadly, I purchased the Kindle edition, which is incomplete. None of the Hebrew quotes or footnotes appear. In their places are squares. for one who knows Rabbinic literature those Hebrew notes are of extraordinary importance. The book is incomplete without them. And the buyer is not warned about this lacuna before making the purchase. The book is important and worth a read, especially because of the influence of the Rav on the last Lubavitcher Rebbe.Buyer beware. Only buy the printed editions unless Kindle includes the Hebrew notes in its e format edition.

I have purchased 5 of these books, and I'm sure I will be buying more. This is a perfect gift for birthdays. It is my go-to present for all of my son's friends who are having birthdays. This book really is awesome. It's a pretty large book with very colorful pages. My son loves learning about the different Pokemon and their levels of evolution and powers, etc. I highly recommend this and it was an excellent price for what you get.

My son loves Pokémon and we had this book in a soft-cover from B & N. It fell apart in a week. Pages were falling out of it due to no fault of our own. When I saw that this was made for library use (a lot of use) decided to bite the bullet and buy it. So much sturdier.

I purchased this for my child who is a Pokemon fan. He loves this handbook because it shows all the Pokemons from the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos regions. This handbook is very colorful and gives you stats on the different Pokemons. It shows what each Pokemon can evolve into. It tells you how to pronounce each Pokemon, as well. Also, it even shows you their new power called Mega Evolution. Great purchase for my little Pokemon fan!

Thank golly this book exists. This 90s kid accidentally hopped into the world of Pokémon shortly after a *massive* convention at a Florida mall in the summer of 1999. Best decision ever. The cards, games, anime on Saturday mornings, the merchandise everywhere!What, another generation? Count me in! Then a third. Ah, alright. Fourth. What? Fifth. Oh, no I can't... what? Yeah, I have terrible memory and could barely memorize past the third gen release of characters. I could barely get by in the Nintendo DS games. Eventually I give in and check out how many Pokémon there are total, not including the Mega versions. Oh, man. I can't check each individual one on Bulbapedia.Fortunately this miracle hit the shelves and was my go-to for a quick briefing and then some. My only complaint is there isn't a clear way the characters are sorted such as alphabetical or by type (grass, water, fire, psychic, etc.). It's very useful the evolved stages are illustrated under applicable Pokémon or a simple "Does not evolve". The most useful thing is how to sound out the names since some might be a little tricky (hard or soft vowels).

My sons copy has at least 4 DOZEN post-it flags throughout this book. I bought it for him about 5 months ago and he still reads it all the time. Adding new flags and trying to explain the pokemon significance to me.The fact that he still reads it is important. Our library has an extensive pokemon handbook and all around reference type collection. (Staying in stock is a huge problem so we're still always seeing something old but new to us) After checking one out he doesn't usually ask to buy, renew it or check it out again later and if he sees something new he will flip quickly through to see if there is anything new. He always falls back to this one. So it must be good.He doesn't watch the tv show or movies or read the comic books. He reads the old pikachu early readers and has pokemon Omega on the DS. So that's his extent of the pokeverse for him this book is great. Since each newer book edition just adds on the new pokemon plus the 700+ old ones. Your kid will notice that none/majority of the main/new featured pokemon on tv/game are in this book. If they are playing newer games or watching the show. The book is great but for kids heavily in the pokeverse make sure you get the newet edition. It makes a huge difference.

My Pokémon obsessed toddler was thrilled beyond bits to get this Poke-bible.However, when he wants to learn more about a new Pokémon he heard about on the show, it means a painstakingly long search of the ENTIRE book, flipping one page at a time to find the said Pokémon. The book desperately needs an appendix or an index listing of the Pokémons and the page numbers they can be found on... I simply can't believe that no ones thought of such a simple solution to make this book more user friendly.

I just received my copy of this book on Tuesday night and have already read the WTF sneak peek section. I am excited to follow it Day by day! I had purchased the Kickass single mom book and loved it, so when I saw that Emma Johnson was coming out with a new book, I didn't think twice to buy. These books give Hope to all of us as single mommies. My goal is to never depend financially on a man and ever have to go through any abuse because "financially there is no way out." There is a way out! and I like to thank Emma Jonhnson for writing books that will help us. Single motherhood is hard, but I would go through it all over again for my daughter. We are warriors! Thanks Emma!

Just finished reading Johnson's book, and love it. Everyone needs this of @sskick with their money. From the challenge to embrace that money is, in fact, easy and to slash expenses like your life depends on it (because it does), it's all great advice. The challenge of networking, day 26, is especially important. So many of us get stuck in our own circle that we forget to expand our horizons and let more opportunities come our way. Also, outsource, outsource, outsource and focus on spending more time with what you're a master at doing! Great, motivating read.

Going through a divorce is really horrible (and anyone who's been divorced recognizes that sentence as the gross understatement that it is). Being a single parent is incredibly difficult (ditto). But... here we are. It can be very overwhelming, and into that pain and chaos comes... the "30 Day Kick-Ass Single Mom Money Makeover".Frankly, this book doesn't contain any new information, really, but it's exactly the strong, encouraging, "you can do this" kick in the pants that you need. (Think of the best part of Dave Ramsey mixed with the best part of Rachel Hollis and now you're getting close to the tone of this book.)Johnson does a great job of laying out simple, incremental steps to help you regain control of your life and your future. Recommend!

Gave a lot of good insights regarding money management especially when dealing with the odds and ends of child support (or lack there of). Her view gave me a different view on the expectation of funds that really are not in your control and can breed bitterness and other negative energy that's no good for mommy or children. I would recommend to other mothers. My book also had a sneak peak of Emma Johnson's next book coming out titled "WTF Wednesday" at the end which was a nice treat. I'll probably be ordering that one once it's released as well.

I loved that this book starts with working on your money mindset to get to the bottom of money issues that keep you stuck. This book helps empower single moms to be independent and successful. It walks you through setting goals and changing negative habits that are not serving you. This will help lead you to a healthy money mindset and learn to take control of your finances and life.

A wonderfully succinct and to-the-point overview of the late Karl Marx. I'd known little of his thoughts and still more less of his life aside from the derogatory stigmas that chase him around thanks to the Marxist mutations found in the likes of Stalin and Lenin. Getting a more true to form portrait of the man and his grievances against capitalism in general alongside his concerns regarding human alienation in particular was both enjoyable and insightful. This was, in no small part, due to Singer's wise navigation through Marx's life, philosophical development, and large output of ideas. Unlike other books in this series ("A Very Short Introduction"), I was never bored or hoping that the already terse journey would come to an end.Overall: helpful, thought provoking, and enjoyable.

The first thing that ought to be noted is that Peter Singer's contribution to the Very Short Introduction series is really a recycling of a volume he wrote way back in 1980 for the old Past Master's series. So far as I can tell, the only revision in the book is a few changes in tense to bring this edition beyond the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was something of a shock--or at least a surprise--to realize that what I thought was a new book was in fact an old one.Notwithstanding, Singer's Marx is a very good introduction. After a brief biographical sketch of Marx--which dispels the myth of his living and dying in penury, by the way--Singer examines his early flirtation with Hegelianism, his reflections on alienation and history, and his political economy. It's in his discussion of the last two topics that Singer excels. I've found no better text for introducing concepts such as "species being" and "labor theory of value" to my undergraduate students. Singer returns to Marx's understanding of human nature and it's relationship to alienating modes of production in his final chapter, "Assessment," and concludes that human nature probably isn't as pliable as Marx supposed. But it's also clear that Singer is sympathetic with Marx's critique of capitalism.A good introduction for absolute newcomers to Marx--which, these days, is probably everyone under 30.

It's difficult, perhaps even impossible, to summarize the prodigious output and major intellectual, socio-political and economics impact of Karl Marx in a single volume and to attempt such in a highly abbreviated work stretches credibility. Nonetheless, the topics selected for the Oxford series are of similar depth and the books are deliberately constrained to this format to make for digestible and understandable reading. Given these parameters, Peter Singer does a credible job, particularly as he attempts to factor in various biographical details, as well as summarizing Marx's work. Is this book "better" than potential competitors (such as Berlin's classic study)? Does it supplant more detailed expositions? Those are, of course, rhetorical questions but the likely answer to both is no. Perhaps there is too much emphasis on biography for such a short work. Perhaps the effort to provide context (by providing information on Hegel and other influences) distracts from the work of Marx, himself. Perhaps some deliberate elisions made by Singer (e.g., Marx on the "Jewish question") detract from the remainder of the book. Maybe the complexities inherent in a philosopher explaining another's work resulted in unneeded complexity. For whatever reason (or reasons), I found this book simultaneously more difficult and more shallow than anticipated. Given the option, I recommend Berlin's book as an introduction to to Marx and Marxism.

This is a remarkably clear introduction to the thought of Karl Marx. I was a little dubious when I picked it up (I read 3 or 4 of the Very Short Introduction books each year), since most of my knowledge of Singer is through his work either on Animal Ethics, Utilitarianism, or his critique of George W. Bush. In fact, I became a vegetarian 25 years ago after reading Singer and Gandhi at the same time. Marx, though, is a horse of a different color. I was simply not confident that he would write as well on the founder of Marxism as well as he did on practical ethics. If anything, he turned out to write even more clearly on Marx than anything else I've read.The problem with Marx is that he wrote so much, much of it in advanced draft form, that one can extract several different Marx's from his pages. It isn't that he is inconsistent that his thinking is constantly in flux as he considers one or another aspect of the issues surrounding capitalism. There truly is no final version of Marx's thought, but rather interim versions. The various books and manuscripts almost serve as commentaries on the other books and manuscripts. The trick is to extract the core of what Marx thought without unduly distorting his work as a whole and without reducing him to a caricature. Singer does a great job of highlighting major themes and trends in Marx's thought while not losing the sense of the difficult of determining with finality precisely what Marx wrote.The importance of a book like this cannot be overstressed. Anyone who knows anything at all about Marx knows that he would have been appalled at the Communist revolutions of the twentieth century. As Singer rightly points out, Marx would unquestionably have been a victim of one of the purges. Whatever complicity Marx had with the excesses of Lenin, Stalin, and Mao is tenuous and debatable (though given that all three cited Marx as their inspiration means that Marx's responsibility for what followed can be legitimately discussed, even if he is exonerated). Not everything he wrote about Capitalism (a term he invented) has proven to be true (though a great deal that he wrote remains shockingly relevant). Those who in 1989 delightedly proclaimed that history had refuted Marx got it all wrong. The fact is that all of us today, even political and economic conservatives, have had our consciousness completely altered by Marx. Nearly all history is done today with unexamined assumptions that we took from Marx. No one would undertake a study of any historical topic without a consideration of the socio-economic factors involved. Sociology, philosophy, political science, economics, and virtually every subject one can consider has been deeply informed by Marxist ideas. Those proclaiming Marx the loser in 1989 got it all wrong: he had won way before then. He has shaped the modern mind as fully as Freud, Martin Luther, Newton, or Darwin. We think through Marxist categories, even when we oppose him.This is just one reason why it is so important to understand what he was about. There are many other very good elementary intros to Marx's thought. Robert Heilbroner's book on Marx is a great one. Ernest Mandel has an excellent short introduction to Marx's economic theory. But I would put Singer's book up there with those. If you are looking for a clear first introduction to Marx, you can do far worse than this.

Its Dostoyevsky! An interesting story of a man caught between his love for a woman, trying to help her financially, and losing her and all he has. Interesting that it is told in the first person. A good way to examine the main character's emotions and motivations.

I enjoyed this book. Well written, excellent plot, wonderfully full characters, that have great personality and are totally believable. I have purchased the next book, can't wait to dive in.

I am a big fan of Dostoevsky, but I have to say this is an odd book. From what I know, he wrote this in a hurry to pay off a gambling debt (oh the irony). This knowledge makes sense when you read it--because it doesn't have really a strong plot or structure. It is an interesting read, and far be it for me to e ver not recommend a Dostoevsky work--hes still a fabulous writer and even his worst is better than most people's bests. The worst I can do is give it 4 stars and not 5

Although I love Dostoevksy's longer works, for some reason I have some trouble getting into his shorter works. I actually really enjoyed the last half of this book, but I found the beginning to be slow. If would probably be more entertaining for people that are interested in gambling. Overall I would probably recommend it because it is a quick read and even though I didn't love the story, Dostoevsky is a fantastic writer.

It is a fantastic book. It is written humorously which makes it enjoyable to read at the same time the analysis of the characters and emotions are spectacular. I definitely recommend this book to anybody to read. I loved it. The literature is beautiful, the language is flawless and it is meaningfully.

I loved this book. I'm not sure that any book entitled "Gambling Psychology" would include a better profile of the psychopathology that is gambling addiction. The main character's massochism is also a wonderful case study of how such personalities operate and function. The plot is excellent and "granny" is so perfectly described that it's as if the author included a photograph of her. Much of the Russian psyche is on display and the reader will get a glimpse into people and lifestyles that are quite in keeping with what one might find today in our own Roulettenberg, Las Vegas. This was a concise but pleasant ride through human nature.

geez, I have a good life compared to the suffering and misery in these novels.

The quality of the paper and ink is not wonderful, but it definitely worth more than the price you pay. Just for the reference, the translation is seemed fine to me, although I'm not an avid reader.

The author does explain the motivation. The author deftly wove her circus experience into her feelings about her mother’s devastating stroke, and learning to be an adult. I wanted to learn something about the circus behind the scenes, and I did. The reality of how those tricks are done is that they are REALLY doing them, with the expected risks and accidents. An interesting book.

Once you pick up this book, it will enthrall you and you will probably forget to make dinner, do the laundry, or even get dressed. Tessa has a unique and amazing story to tell; a very personal and touching story about her experience in the last traveling sideshow as well as her relationship with her mother. She weaves these two themes together brilliantly.

At first, I wasn’t sure about the premise of Tessa Fontaine’s memoirs, the Electric Women. After all, what kind of person leaves a critically injured mother, debilitated by a stroke, just to join the circus? Skeptically, I began reading, and came upon this. “There is no trick. You eat fire by eating fire” (4). That’s the point. It isn’t what you do, it’s about who you become by doing it. So, the more I read the stronger my ‘aha’ moment was when I discovered Tessa Fontaine’s Electric Woman is a feminist hero’s journey. And, in classic Maureen Murdock style, Fontaine was crafting a true feminist awakening. She had me now.As in any feminist hero’s journey, their must be a separation between the hero and society’s prescribed role of femininity. For Fontaine, this catalyst was her mother’s massive stroke that rendered her infant-like and unable to care for herself. It is then Fontaine decides to join Worlds of Wonder, a travelling sideshow circus, leaving her mother in the capable hands of her husband, Tessa’s stepfather.Fontaine’s eschewing of the conventional feminine role of caregiving, appears to give voice to her opinion of an antiquated and dying notion of femininity, and ironically, are similar views her mother had rebelled against. Fontaine recalls watching her mother perform an act atop a surfer for onlookers in Hawaii. “She performs fearlessness. The board is unsteady atop the water and the surfer’s legs shake with the effort of balance and she quivers as she flexes her muscles to stay upright, and still she keeps one arm up, up, up toward the sky, that kind of queen pointing at the sun, that high” (14). This passage works for me because it a metaphor of the passing of the feminism baton in the mother/daughter dynamic of feminist ideology.Besides the idea of Fontaine setting out on a feminist hero’s journey, what I also find appealing and works well is the literary effect of alternating the narrative between a turbulent relationship with a once dynamic mother that lived life caught between feminism and conformity, and Fontaine’s own quest to understand her issues of fear of losing her mother that had plagued her for years. By seeking out danger in the sideshow, Fontaine hoped it would steel her spine and harden her heart to that deepest fear.Along her journey, Fontaine seeks validation from her male counterparts, eager to show she is just as capable as they are. She encounters all the requisite monsters of a proper quest, such as a giant, huge snakes, lots of fire, and even a human-swallowing dragon all the while questioning her own abilities and motivations for undertaking such a journey at a time when her mother’s fragile state is a constant crisis.Slowly Tessa masters the skills of fire eating, snake wrangling, sword swallowing. Most of all she learns she’s capable of conquering her fears in a manner which celebrates the feminine aspects of herself and not as traditional patriarchy demands. As the sideshow comes to an end, it is here Tessa receives a boon. A gift of knowledge that interconnects all women. Fontaine ultimately realizes letting go of fear brought her to her gift, the sacred feminine, passed from woman to woman, mother to daughter, sister to friend. It is the understanding that they are not incidental to men, they are not other. In her efforts to lose herself, Tessa Fontaine found her way. “I didn’t know the future. But I knew I had a little power” (192).Fontaine’s memoirs are beautifully written yielding an abundance of literary fruit yet, I found the inclusion of Raymond, the adult movie movie maker, and the dragon monster, Vore, who eats dominatrixes did not work for me. It felt disjointed from the storyline adding little more than a literal representation of being swallowed by something scary. “What is it made of?” I ask. Lady bodies, Raymond says (196). In this context it seems too much ‘on the nose’ But, it is more accurate to say it is more my issue of not understanding its relevance than of the author’s intentions. All in all a fascinating read, and a must for all fans of the feminist hero’s journey.A book similar in type to Tessa Fontaine’s Electric Woman is All You Can Ever Know: A Memoir by Nicole Chung is a story about losing your roots within your family and culture and what happens when you discover them. It too is a memoir about fear and abandonment and they multi-generational journey of the mother/daughter dynamic.

I had just met a group of other caretakers who were all struggling with the occasional despair of caretaking as well as the inevitable saying goodbye when I read this book. Maybe it was just the right book at the right time, but Tessa Fontaine hit exactly the right notes for me. It was interesting to learn about joining the last remaining side-show in America and the author did a great job of revealing that life and the characters she met. But she also wove her adventures into the adventures of her mother and her step-father. This is one of the few books I will re-read. It is both poignant and life-affirming and I highly recommend it.

This memoir has everything a good book should—action, suspense, and plenty of heart. The writer joins the last American traveling carnival sideshow (called The World of Wonders) and learns the tricks of the trade, climbing the ranks from bally girl to the titular electric woman. Meanwhile, she reckons with her mother's illness and a relationship that hasn;t always been easy, though it's clear the two women care for each other deeply. There's plenty of humor and love here, and the details Fontaine shares about her experience in the sideshow are both fascinating and awe-inspiring. I can't recommend this book enough!

Wow - this book blew me away! Sure, it's long but every word from the title to the epilogue is chosen with meticulous care. The result is just beautiful. I enjoyed reading about circus life - the gritty characters, physical exhaustion, and dismal economics - and the astonishing, complicated love between mother and daughter. This one will stick with me for a long time. I highly recommend it.

I was fascinated by this book, and kept having to remind myself that it was nonfiction. I lost my own mother last year, so I enjoyed her thoughts on what it is like to lose someone, especially your mother. I was astounded by the harsh living conditions on the sideshow, and kept imagining myself trying to sleep and survive in that level of discomfort. Didn't sound good to me, so this 74 year-old will NOT be running away to the circus!
