This book does cover a lot of the earlier patterns (pre 1930's) that other general glassware books that show/list Indiana Glass patterns doesn't cover. I found this book to be real resourceful in explaining if their patterns were reissued, produced by different companies, if they bought molds from other companies, when and if they altered the molds. Federal Glass company's pattern Madrid pre WWII era is a good example of this. The molds were destroyed during WWII and in 1976 new molds were created with a "76" added into the pattern to distinguish the re-issuance and entered under "Recollection". Indiana Glass bought the molds in 1978 and removed the "76" but kept the name "Recollection". They cover the colors and time line those colors were produced, if other companies have made the patterns in different colors that Indiana Glass didn't. The photos in this book are excellent and the colors true to the pieces. I am impressed with the clarity of the photos. Tips on telling the older pieces from more current productions is a plus. There is a good section that shows the actual catalog pages with the newer pages in color. I would definitely recommend this book for identifying Indiana Glass patterns.

The book could be arranged in a better fashion. Some known Indiana products, such as the #2381/2 Relish do not seem to be included. Its not as handy as other Schiffer books have been.

This is a great book for the Indiana glass collectors and anyone who just likes glass. I live within 20 miles of the Indiana Glass Plant that produced all the wonderful items that are just recently becoming collectable. The Indiana Glass Plant only recently shut down for good. It closed its doors in 2000 if I remember correctly. I am sure that there isn't to much left of the glass that is so familiar to us around here. This book has excellent pictures and information of items that were made throughout the many years the Plant was in operation. I hope it will help you as much as it has me.

Pretty good book on products they made.

I would have like more photographs of pieces for the patterns. Just a single photograph is all it has for the patterns.

Just what I was looking for.

It didn't include anything about their vintage Indiana Glass Crystal Concord Octagonal Shaped Covered Candy Dishes, which I collect. That was a bit disappointing.

Craig Schenning has done a great job of identifying Indiana Glass patterns, including information on dates of production, colors, and lists of known pieces with current prices. Also included are several patterns originally produced by other companies but whose molds are known to have been acquired (and produced) by Indiana in later years. Lots of good color photos, although you may have to look elsewhere to identify etchings and decorations. The best book I've seen on Indiana glassware.

So glad i bought this cookbook. Very informative and the recipes are wonderful. Excellent addition to my collection. Thank you. So many great recipes.

I don't own this book, and I never will, because the sample recipes shown all use artificial sweeteners, which are poison. If someone knows of a book with NATURALLY low-carb recipes - like a bloody mary for example -- that don't need sugar to make them palatable, please let me know.

This book has many low carb drinks and makes it easy to make. The hard part is choosing. For low carb dieters and people with diabetes this makes it easy to finally have something more than the usual.

I tried half a dozen of the recipes and the drinks just don't taste right. I also had a bad aftertaste on some.I'd rather drink MUCH less of the real stuff than drink more of this awful stuff.

Persnickety's bizarre statements in his review of his other book, Beyond Atkins, appears to indicate that Persnickety is Markham or possibly a close family member (OUR accomplishments). Then Persnickety reviews his own book here! And gives it five stars, of course!Does Amazon approve of this? I don't. Do you?

Finally a book on guilt-free cocktails. So far, I've tried 5 different Low Carb Cocktail recipes and all tasted fantastic!!! This is a handy and beautiful book that was well written! I wish you health, happiness and much success! This is truly a great book on low carb cocktails!

“The most important work of pedagogy I’ve read in ten years...Dr. Emdin’s humane, and more importantly, effective practices, filled me with great hope and excitement to keep engaging with the community in which I teach.”—John Warner, Inside Higher Ed“Teaches the unlearned lesson that a hip-hop people’s critical perspective must matter in order for authentic teaching and learning to take place, but more importantly the book offers a bigger case for colleges to make room for other hip-hop scholars.”—Dr. Andre Perry, The Hechinger Report“Dr. Chris Emdin...inspired me to become fearless while teaching for social justice.”—Bryan Mooney, contributor PBS NewsHour’s Education Lounge“As the cries to recognize the relevance of Black lives in this country grow louder...Emdin’s advice about how to more effectively serve students (people) of color is a reminder that recognizing their humanity is a critical first step.”—Diverse: Issues in Higher Education"A brilliant, blistering, and bracing call to arms for those who teach and learn in urban America.…Emdin reminds us that the children and young people who throng our urban schools are worthy of every attempt to sharpen their minds and prepare them for a satisfying life far beyond the classroom. If you’re looking for the revolutionary meaning, and imaginative transformation, of teaching for the real America, you’re holding it in your hands! Christopher Emdin is Jonathan Kozol with swag!”—Michael Eric Dyson, author of The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America“Essential reading for all adults who work with black and brown young people...Filled with exceptional intellectual sophistication and necessary wisdom for the future of education.”—Imani Perry, author of Prophets of the Hood: Politics and Poetics in Hip-Hop“A compelling and accessible road map for anyone (not just white folks!) teaching twenty-first-century urban youth. It also confirms Emdin’s reputation as one of the most important education scholars of our generation.”—Marc Lamont Hill, author of Beats, Rhymes, and Classroom Life and Distinguished Professor of Africana Studies at Morehouse College“This volume is a powerful dance of teaching and art. It engages both the art and science of what teachers must do to be successful with all students. #3,288 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood... and the Rest of Y'all Too is a book for more than just white educators who teach primarily minority students. The book focusses on low income, urban schools which have a majority of black and latino students, but the themes can be applied to any scholastic or workplace setting. It is essentially a tutorial on a how to build a communal atmosphere in the classroom and then use that framework to motivate students to learn. Christopher Emdin shows why a traditional background in modern educational practices is not enough to motivate disadvantaged kids to learn. He uses his own experiences to illustrate how easy it is to falsely confirm biased preconceptions. Then he explains how the heart of the problem lies in how those elevated into administrative positions create policy based off those preconceptions. The overall tone of the book however, is optimistic. Emdin provides a strategy for making substantive change in urban education. The book effectively portrays the disconnect between white teachers and students of color. Emdin refers to these students as neoindigenous, literally meaning “new indigenous”. He believes their struggles are deeply related to those indigenous Americans experienced as the Unites States expanded and forced integration. He argues that the primary cause of discord in the past was the failure to acknowledge the value of Native American culture and incorporate it into Western dogma. Emdin claims that the same thing is happening today to black and brown students.” The leaders within the field of urban education can’t fathom the day-to-day experiences of urban students who see themselves as ready to learn despite not being perceived that way.” He proposes that schools are alienating students from their communities as they attempt to “reform” them. One of his core ideas is that Neoindigenous are failing because teachers treat them as if their culture is inferior. They think the only way to achieve progress is by erasing their identity and replacing it with obedience. Emdin makes it clear that this only leads to either rebellion or soul crushing submission. The best solution is sympathetic insight.“Addressing the issues that plague urban education requires a true vision that begins with seeing students in the same way they see themselves.”He acknowledges that it isn’t the teacher’s fault, that teachers are trying hard, but the methods they are instructed to use don’t reach neoindigenous populations. Emdin does a great job of introducing educational concepts and showing how to properly employ new techniques in the classroom. Each chapter of the book builds upon the ideas of the last to create a broad strategy. Every method he suggests is related to fostering a communal atmosphere, resulting in what he calls pentecostal pedagogy. In his own words “Pentecostal pedagogy considers the language of the students, and incorporates it into the teaching by welcoming slang, colloquialisms, and “nonacademic” expressions, and then uses them to introduce new topics, knowledge, and conversations...Pentecostal pedagogy teaches us that once student voice is prominent in the classroom, and a classroom family structure has been established, issues that traditionally plague urban classrooms, like poor management and low participation, are quickly addressed or even self-corrected.”The core tactic designed to implement pentecostal pedagogy is the cogen. Cogen is short for cogenerative dialogue, meaning a discussion among the teacher and students about their collective needs. By collecting a small, diverse group of students from the class and making them comfortable enough to share their thoughts the teacher gains a great deal of insight. After the cogen is established Emdin shows how it can be used to create a cosmopolitan classroom, one which lets students feel connected to their class and educational goals. The key is allowing students to take part in the process.“students in traditional K– 12 schools have to be viewed as partners with the adults who are officially charged with the delivery of content and be seen/ named/ treated as fellow teachers or coteachers.”Emdin chronicles his past experience with these methods by highlighting his success as well as the hurdles to proper execution. Perhaps the most demanding instruction the book suggests is that educators must go outside their comfort zone and into the neighborhoods of the neoindigenous. The majority of teachers never identify with their pupils beyond the teacher/mentor relationship. Emdin believes to really know someone you have to go where they live.“it became clear that there are three basic steps to fully learning about, and engaging with, students’ context….The first involves being in the same social spaces with the neoindigenous, the second is engaging with the context, and the third is making connections between the out-of-school context and classroom teaching.”This step is the embodiment of all the other processes in pentecostal pedagogy. Emdin contends that to really know someone and make genuine connections you have to enter their social spaces. I think Christopher Emdin does an incredible job of demonstrating how to use pedagogical techniques in any environment. The focus is the neoindiginous population but I think the insight he provides is universally applicable. The layman reader will finish this book with a deep understanding of why many kids are struggling and how to fix it. Professional educators will have a refreshing example of how to use the tools they have acquired in their own education to reach their students.

A great read. This author is very insightful and offers great information on how to educate African American children. I recommend that educators read this book. I guarantee you it will force Educators of any race to reevaluate education children of color.

This book brings cultural diverse strategies into any classroomIt also brings awareness of becoming complacent and thinking one size fits all in education

This could help Black teachers too.

although you mind find the title a bit comical - this book should be a requirement for any teacher trying to connect with urban students. Written by credible, former educators - contains plenty of theories, strategies and ideas to help you teach to your students more effectively. a culturally relevant pedagogy pioneer!

Horrible! This book was more like an essay on how white teachers are to blame for the failure of the education system. It offered no insight or real help. I want my money back.

Half way thru and my perspective has changed even as an African American teacher

This book was hard to read in the beginning. I never looked at myself from the authors perspective. The more I read the more understood. I need to change the way I address my urban classroom. I'm up for the challenge! Thanks

The Unheard, by Josh Swiller

From Publishers Weekly

Although doctors diagnosed Swiller's deafness early enough to fit him with hearing aids, the young man from Mantattan's Upper West Side still felt different. As a young adult he drifted from college to college, job to job, relationship to relationship, never quite finding what he was looking for: a place beyond deafness. He found that place in the mid-1990s, when the Peace Corps posted him to a remote corner of Zambia. During his two-year stint working in a run-down health clinic in a rural village, he fought for irrigation projects and better AIDS facilities. He befriended a young local who played chess and provided constant counsel in the ways the young white American could—and did—run afoul of local tribesmen (and women) and their age-old ways. Deafness would have provided a unique sensory filter for anyone, yet while Swiller may have his particular aural capabilities, he also has literary talents—an eye, a voice and a narrative talent—in abundance. A story in any other Peace Corps volunteer's hands might have been humdrum, but in Swiller's becomes intensified, like the rigors of day-to-day Zambian life, through deprivation. (Sept.) Review

“I thought I knew about the Peace Corps until I read Josh Swiller's hilarious, troubling, and at times frightening recreation of his time in Zambia. His wit spares no one--least of all himself--and his generosity of spirit encompasses nearly everyone. His experiences in Africa transformed him, and this book will transform readers.” ―Laurence Bergreen, author of Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe“I was riveted by this book from page one. Swiller shouldn't have lived to tell this tale, much less been sent to a village in deepest Africa that the locals called 'Gomorrah.' But he did, and he's returned with something priceless: a story suffused with humor and love about a place where corruption and death were regular visitors. Swiller hears the rhythms of language and life far better than most people with two normal ears.” ―Michael Chorost, author of Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human“As my mother used to say, ‘You got your listening ears on, bub?' This is not gimp chic, nor misery memoir, but a book as deserving, funny and brave as a deaf man digging wells in hardest Africa. Hoo boy. And I thought being blind at the bus depot was harrowing. Yeesh.” ―Ryan Knighton, author of Cockeyed: A Memoir“Josh Swiller was 22 and profoundly deaf when he applied to the Peace Corps in search of adventure. And indeed, adventure he found. His experiences in Zambia are eloquently recounted in his hard-to-put-down memoir of deafness and Africa, 'The Unheard'.” ―The New York Times, Health section“Several ingredients are crucial in a memoir like this: humor, the ability to see enough details to make the scene come alive and a dispassionate compassion. Swiller has them all.” ―Los Angeles Times“[Swiller's] appealing, intelligent narrative serves both as a coming of age story and as a penetrating light into one corner of a tormented continent.” ―Washington Post“Josh Swiller rewrites the familiar African narrative with a purity that makes the tragic beauty of that devastated continent a stunning novelty for readers. We experience the rich, tangible passions of love, honor and revenge in Africa, amplified a thousandfold in the quiet world of the deaf.” ―New York Observer

What a beautiful book! I was so moved by the author's honesty, humor, insight... and grateful for the deeper understanding into what it means to be deaf. As someone who was raised in Africa, I'm grateful to Josh for the eloquence with which he articulates the strange mix of raw, often violent existence and what he calls Africa's grace; the same mix that opens your heart as it breaks it. This book brought to the surface again why I miss Africa so much and why I don't live there any more. I wish Josh had done consecutive stints as a Peace Corps volunteer in village after village so that we could have "The Unheard: A series." As an avid reader of all things African, the greatest compliment I can give Josh Swiller is to put him up alongside Alexandra Fuller. It's an accomplishment he deserves. Bravo!

A talented writer with an incredible story. This book will give you insight into an entirely new world, one most of us will never know. It will also make you laugh out loud, be grateful for where you live, and the friendships you have. A truly beautiful story and life well lived.

I was also a member of that first group of PCV's to serve in Zambia and Josh and I were two of the eight who completed our commitments, although a couple of those who didn't complete their stint left for health reasons. I loved his book, and was unable to put it down once I started on it. I'm only mentioned in the book once, a bit out of character. Page 42: I'm the "middle-aged alcoholic from Michigan" (I object to the "middle-aged" part, as I was but a young lad of 39 at the time). The story of Josh's departure from Munungu was never fully revealed to me until reading the book. Like all government-related organizations, Peace Corps is great at keeping secrets and rumors always abound. Josh and I were not close but we did bond a bit after he returned to Kabwe and was once again teaching the deaf students. It was only upon reading the book that I gained an appreciation for his intellect and the really horrible experiences he had in Munungu. At Peace Corps meetings or functions, he always seemed distracted, not interested, withdrawn. After reading the book, my eyes are opened to what the guy endured up there in Munungu and what being deaf is really all about.I pre-ordered the book, with low expectations. Basically, I was concerned about what he may have said about me. What I did not expect was the clarity and smooth-flow of the narrative, the exceptional descriptors of characters ("voice like firecrackers" comes to mind), the entirely accurate desriptions of life in a bush village. A lot of what he wrote brought tears to my eyes, as I had experienced similar things in my own village of Lukwesa. Plus, I knew or had met a lot of the people he talks about in the book. After reading it, I was ashamed at myself for not getting to know him better while in Zambia those two years, for underestimating his abilities, for not have taken more time while there to help him with his problems instead of selfishly concentrating on my own. The book opened my eyes to a lot of things that were happening right under my nose, but in my hearing ignorance I was blind (equally handicapped) to events as they occurred in regards to brother Josh. My apologies, Josh. This is a great story written by a courageous young man who coped with a host of things (in Zambia as well as dealing with his own deafness) way better than those of us who are not so impaired. I vouch for its truthfulness and content and I know I will be reading it over and over again until the pages are frayed at the corners and the book will lie open voluntarily at whatever page number I'm on.Greg IrishLas Vegas, NevadaMember of Peace Corps Zambia One

I met Josh very briefly about 8 months ago at Gallaudet. One of the friends I was with had arranged to meet him; I just said hello, exchanged pleasantries and left, following the rest of my group. When my friend caught up with the group, she was not too happy because I guess she was expecting Josh to recount his entire time in Africa so she wouldn't have to read the book. After that, I decided that I would read "The Unheard" on the off chance that I would meet Josh and we could have a conversation without the major stumbling block of not having read his book.By the time I got around to reading it, my own hearing loss had recently been diagnosed. It wound up being the perfect timing. I was trying to figure out where I fit in and who I was.The thing that really made this book helpful and successful for me was that it wasn't trying to be more than a memoir. He wrote about his experiences and what it meant in the context of his life. Memoirs can sometimes be so full of delusions of grandeur that they're just not worth reading. The writing was clear and concise without being short or choppy. This book wasn't trying to spell out ways to fix the way the Peace Corps works in Africa or provide a dissertation on the heirarchy within the African diaspora or be a self-help book suggesting you spend two years in the Peace Corps to learn about yourself and fix your problems. I probably wouldn't have made it through the entire book if it had tried any of those things.

Others have given a powerful and complete synopsis of the content of the book. So I'm going to take another tact and strongly recommend it because of its honesty, hubris and humor in presenting the challenges of coping with deafness. With these qualities it shines Light and uses words to describe a powerful experience of cultural compatibility and dissonance from a place of hearing as well as the wisdom/reflection of inner silence. With the highest "magic" of the universe's synchroncity I purchased "the Unheard" the day after I visited a deaf patient and her mother as a chaplain volunteer in a large hospital. I needed to ressurect my basic, rusty sign language to communicate. The next day I heard Josh interviewed on NPR and guessed that his book would sensitize me to communication issues, the deaf community, coping mechanisms, the value of experiencing different cultures, and the search for meaning in life's largest, most encompassing questions. It's all "hear" in Josh's book. I'm starting my second reading. Josh, your are philospher and poet and I hope you know it!

The artist deserves 5 stars, but the book deserves only 2. I had high hopes because this book seemed to unite my love of Frida Kahlo, Dia de los Muertos, vibrant colors and folk art. The artist delivers on the style but the book breaks down on substance. I hate posting negative reviews of an artist's work, and the only reasons I do are- 1) to prevent others from feeling cheated by too many positive reviews, and 2) most importantly, to help the author with any future books.Heather Galler has a great style- very appealing colors and bold lines and patterns. What I'd hoped for from the book was instructions on how to paint in a folk art style, how to see things and draw in that style. I would have loved to see the images that inspired her and how she interpreted them. How did she create the patterned backgrounds and the stylized faces? There are only a few pages at the front of the book that discuss paints, other materials, techniques, styles and interpretation. I mean like 8 total, and that includes several full page paintings and lots of white space. There is only 1 photo of a Chihuahua in a hat and serape next to a painting of the dog, and 3 sentences that basically say I picked this Chihuahua because I like Chihuahuas. You could have fit all 8 pages easily on 2. The remainder of the book is 16 chapters of completed individual paintings with line drawings and instructions to just copy the drawing and then copy the colors. The instructions say things like "With a light purple paint pen, draw random sized polka dots on the purple background" right above a picture of that stage of the painting with purple dots. There are no references to why paint colors were chosen or how you can vary the background, absolutely no room for individual interpretation. This is pretty much a coloring book that you have to transfer to canvas. Several of the reviews mention something like this, but not that every single painting/chapter is like that. I really can't emphasize enough the allover skimpiness of information. The gallery at the back had some very cool paintings (especially the image of Einstein) but with no info on them at all.Overall, this book is a huge disappointment. I'm keeping it because I like her work, but if you see the sample chapter of Frida Kahlo, that's pretty much all there is to the rest of the book- 16 simplified images painted exactly the same way. There's no progression of techniques, just the same instructions over and over again.

This is a great inspirational art book for beginners. I just finished the painting that is on the front cover and had so much fun doing it. There are a few projects that are very basic, e.g. the landscapes and some that have more detail. You may be disappointed if you are already an experienced painter; as I mentioned it is more for people who are just starting out.

As the owner of many original paintings by Heather Galler, this book is a fascinating look into the making of her art. It makes a wonderful coffee table book and conversation piece. It would be a great gift for anyone who appreciates "folk art" or who is a budding artist. The selections of paintings include portraits (such as Frida Kahlo as shown on the cover), animals, cities and landscapes.

I just love Heather Galler's artwork and have ordered quite a few pieces. This book is just awesome and helps you learn how to create folk art yourself.

This book basically gives you templates to trace to reproduce the artist's version of the folk art painting. No info on folk art itself or how to really learn to paint in a folk style. Very disappointed in the book overall.

I've been a Galler fan for several years and this book is wonderful. I would recommend for anyone who enjoys mixed media work and/or folk art.

Absolutely love this book!! I wish this artist had others to buy.

I love this books and it's great easy to follow steps. Templates are available online for each painting. Can't wait to get started!

If you didn't grow up in the city and your reading this book, you'll wonder how Johnny n his friends survived school. Especially through the racial wars. It seems they all had to be violent and know how to fight at the drop of a hat at any given time. Another amazing thing is John was riding the subways at age 5 and knew how to avoid shakedowns buy the pandhandlers. His dad taught him well! SC Pike also offers an in depth look at the back room gambling and betting that went on with Matt A.and some Mob counterparts. Johnny and his dad had an amazing cheat system in place during card games that had me smiling just imagining how he through the signals.Great book!

This book was not what I expected. I thought I was buying a book based on one of Gotti's hit man and his life in "the life". However this book tells the story of John Alite's childhood. I think the author should have condensed the three books. It's an interesting story to a point, but it wasn't gripping.

Darkest Hour is gritty, honest, and raw. It showcases a time and era in the streets of New York long forgotten and swept away by history.John Alite’s tale may only be one of many but is written in such a gripping way to the reader they can’t help but be at the edge of their seat.SC Pike tells a tale of a child born to the streets which raised John to become a killer for a notorious mafia family and how he now takes his knowledge and applies it to help children escape the kind of life and better themselves. This is an intriguing story of survival and redemption.

This is the worst and I mean worst book I've ever read. I have read every Mafia book that has been written. This was the most boring one of all. The whole book was about his childhood not one thing about his interaction with the Mafia. I'd love to get my money back. Horrible read.I wouldn't give it any stars but you have to give it a least one.

I couldn’t put this book down! S.C. Pike grabs your attention in Chapter 1 with the early life story of John Alite, a notorious Mafia Enforcer, and doesn’t let it go! The perils that John faces during his childhood and young adult life that lead him to being a hit man are perfectly captured in this book, and you will be surprised to discover that you actually like him...guaranteed! Can’t wait for Book 2!

Don't bother. It is poorly written. No message just self serving crap. Whoa is me and idiotic excuses. Stay away.

Typical mafia yarn, nothing new or different than dozens of other mob books.

Has nothing to do with the mafia. The entire book is his childhood.
