Recently completed a 1 week trip to Taipei and used this guide exclusively for planning side trips and sightseeing. Everything was in this book. Needed to go through it cover-to-cover a couple of times because of the organization of the book, but could plan a whole day of activities with it. But if I just wanted to look something up quickly (like when I was on the MRT and trying to get all the info about Tamsui and all the activities/restaurants/sights) it took a lot of scanning. The index is not complete, has some incorrect page references and transliterations are also not complete in the index. The book didn't stress how incredibly easy it was to get around Taipei on the MRT. After we got our EasyCards and took our first ride we realized that we could cover twice as much as we had planned. Taipei has the BEST rapid transit system in the world! All-in-all it was a great guide - covered a lot of material. Thanks!!

This wonderful compact country reference book came in handy during a recent family trip to Taiwan. We landed in Kaohsiung and used the book to plan day trips in Kaohsiung, Tainan and Taichung, and used the high speed railway system to get around the island based on the book's suggestions. The itineraries are well-planned and offer good options for things to do. We had an itinerary for Taipei but had to change it because of the weather, and this book provided alternatives.We found the Taipei metro map with photos helpful, and used the map with the metro "MRT" ride described in the back of the book, which highlights what there is to do along the Taipei metro. The Chinese translations under the names and addresses of restaurants and attractions around the island came in especially handy, and the "Taiwan From A To Z" section provided good information about the rest of Taiwan and its outlying islands. We truly enjoyed the restaurant guide! I can't recall a time when we've eaten so much. The restaurant guide is up-to-date and we appreciated the hotel and hot springs descriptions, which helped us find accommodations and relaxation around the island.The photos introduced us to some of the interesting foods my husband ended up trying, such as stinky tofu (I wasn't that brave) and we learned about Taiwanese culture prior to our visit from the "Taiwan From A To Z" section. We found the maps detailed and clear. After reading "Communication Corner" we had a much better idea of what to expect about Taiwanese culture. We found people friendly but not fluent in English, so we used the English/Chinese phrases in the book on several occasions.Along with the well-planned tour itineraries we discovered culture and humor as well as ample hiking, accurate hotel descriptions, and excellent restaurants. After reading this book we knew exactly what to expect, as if a local friend were helping us. In a nutshell, this book is exactly how a Taiwan travel guide should be, a well-planned communications book with both English and Chinese introducing the entire island of Taiwan. We were quite pleased with this book and recommend it to others.

I'm researching for a trip I'm planning to Taiwan with my wife and son -- and I bought this book because of the great reviews on Amazon. This book reads like a great collection of personal notes that a long time resident of the region would write on note cards and a loose leaf binder. These tidbits are grouped alphabetically by category (museums, parks, shopping, etc), so it makes it easy to find a type of place you want to visit. The book contains only smaller black and white pictures, so if you're looking for color glossies you'll need to check out other books like National Geographic Traveler: Taiwan 2nd Edition. Chinese characters are provided for many place names which is a big plus for getting directions or telling taxi drivers where you want to go. I'll update this review after the trip to comment on the accuracy and usefulness of the information.

While attempting to plan a trip to Taiwan from Australia I found practically nothing existed on Taiwan. The travel agents knew nothing about the country and even questioned why anyone would want to go to Taiwan.While reading the Travel Advisor Forum I came across a reference from another Forumer who had read "Taipei In A Day" and found it very helpful.I immediately ordered a copy from Amazon and found that the book not only covered Taipei but the whole of Taiwan. Annie Douglass Lima spent most of her childhood in Kenya and later graduated from Biola University in Southern California. She and her husband Floyd currently live in Taiwan, where she teaches fifth grade at Morrison Academy. If you're looking for a new and relaxing way to memorize and study scriptures from the bible, this book is for you. Use it to practice mindfulness and to fully study the selected verses from the bible. Also includes fun activities for when you just want something easy to do.The word scrambles serve as an interesting exercise to get you thinking. It also includes a weekly planner so it's doing double duty for you. Each day has an interesting holiday on it as well where it applies. Because some of the images are pretty small, you'll likely need a fine tip marker, fine tip pens, or colored pencils for coloring. Puzzle answers are included in the back for your reference. It's clear there was a lot of thought put into the organization of this book and a lot of care was put into making it a rich experience for the colorist.

Coloring scripture verses was fun. At first I wasn’t sure I liked the bubble letters. After coloring them in, I realized they looked quite pretty.While coloring it felt similar to a meditative state which was relaxing. It also allowed me time for quiet reflection. I especially enjoyed working on a word puzzle while listening to an audiobook! The puzzles are a great addition to the book as it is permission (if you need that) to play. One suggestion for future volumes is to alphabetize the word list for the word search!Some ideas inspired while coloring this book:Cross-stitch or embroider a verse of scripture.Discuss and illustrate favorite verses with my kids.Interestingly the first page fit perfectly with my word for the year which added to my enjoyment. I absolutely plan on finishing the rest of the activities in this book. Hope there are more volumes in the future!I received a free copy. This review was written by myself and honestly expressed.

I especially liked the unscramble words. The Hide it In Your Heart in 2019 is a great way to de-stress and memorize scripture and enjoy it at the same time.

I love the planner part. I am very busy and need to keep organized. I'm not necessarily big on the coloring part, but I can see where it would be good for a family. The kids can help color in the pages and do the puzzles. Families can memorize the verses together. Overall, a really great idea and a practical book for every day busy life.

What a treasure this calendar is. Annie has put so much thought into creating not just coloring pages and other activities, but features that are special, thoughtful, and full of encouragement, reminding us of God's loving Word.

Hide it In Your Heart is a unique coloring calendar created by Annie Douglass Lima. There are 53 Bible verses and 24 word puzzles for adults and kids. We found the pages lots of fun to color and there's a variety of pictures to choose from. Some of the details in my picture were almost too fine, making it more challenging than I had expected. Other pictures have less details for the younger ones. Amanda's page was perfect for a 10-year-old and Samantha (age 18) loved her sea themed one! I recommend this calendar for the family. The journey which this book describes, was originally written up in journal which I followed for a very long time. I enjoyed Chris' writing style, the humour, his take on the world as the explored it and the detailed accounts he gave to allow us to be part of his journey. I was worried how well he would be able to turn a long sprawling epic of a journal into an actual book.In short, he has done a brilliant job. There is a great mix of the detail that makes situations come alive with clever linking sections to condense time, a good structure that plays with when we are told information - rather than being as chronological as the journal was forced to be by being 'written on the road' - and most importantly, the book has captured the humour and quirks of Chris' approach to travel, life and a search for love. So very much recommended for people who enjoy books about travel and/or bike touring. It will make you want to get out there (mostly... there are a few quite stressful bits that I don't want happening on any of my trips!).

Chris has a humorous and self-deprecating writing style. Won't give much of it away but in his around the world bike tour, he encounters all kinds of stuff; great, bad, romance, frustrating, health, etc. He really lets you see how it is to tour (I have been touring for almost 40 years) and why we love to do it.Buy the book!

This is by far the best book I have read regarding the subject of long distance cycling and I have read many. Chris is on an amazing adventure and describes his trip with passion and in an interesting way. Many times I found myself pulling up Google maps to see exactly where in the world he actually was and the Flickr album which accompanies the book is a great source of reference to see the people and places he talks about specifically. I am currently reading Part Two (Into The Sunrise). I wish I had attempted something like this when I was his age, an incredible life experience!

I cycled around the world myself some years ago (and took almost 7 years) and through this book relived some of these experiences. Chris is setting himself some massive challenges and makes his cycling life most difficult at times but you got to respect that. Some keen observations and a story sprinkled with lots of humour, makes this book a delight to read. I am looking forward to read Part 2

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Chris has more determination in his little finger than most have in the other bits. A delightful sense of humour to go with a sometimes hair raising journey across some of the toughest terrain a traveling cyclist could take on. What an adventure! He deserves to get the girl. I look forward to the next instalment. Great read.

I love these products. For only a few dollars you get an entire formula sheet (3 to 4 pages long and laminated). I try to pick these up for any math or foreign language class that I have.

Great product on the quality, it is durable as I have it all over and no damage yet. I use it for quick reference so I'm digging back into my notes for on the fly problems. My biggest use was logic, sets, and induction for the class I had. Would buy other products from seller if needed.

This helped. I wish there was more to it, as we seemed to cover even more than the card seems to provide. Nonetheless, I would have struggled less if I had bought this earlier in the course.

I had a hard time characterizing this wonderful book. It explains the fundamentals, but it's not an introductory book like Learning Perl. It covers almost every feature of the Perl 5 language, but it's not a reference book like Programming Perl. It explains common idioms, but it's not a guide to Perl 5 fluency like Effective Perl Programming. It contains many practical suggestions, but it's not a book of tips like Perl Hacks.I can only describe it as a "textbook". If I had to pick a single book to teach Perl 5, this is the one I'd choose. As I read it, I was reminded of the first time I read K&R (C Programming Language) and how much learning was packed into it. (It's the only college programming text I still have). In a slim 250 pages, Modern Perl obsoletes most of my shelf of Perl 5 books. It's not intended for a complete novice to programming (any more than K&R was), but in the hands of a competent programmer or a diligent student it will teach everything that one needs to know to write Perl 5 well.What I especially like about Modern Perl is that it puts particular emphasis on understanding fundamental Perl 5 concepts like "context" and "scope". From these and other foundations, one can understand why certain programming idioms have emerged and one can avoid surprises in the odder corners of the language. If you want a book to spoon feed cut-and-paste code to you, this is not the book for you. If you want a book that will teach you to write your own code confidently, this is an excellent resource.If you already know some programming and want to learn Perl 5, then Modern Perl is the book you should get. If you already know Perl 5, but don't think you know it well, or if you haven't kept up in developments in Perl 5 since the late 1990's, then Modern Perl will get you up to speed.

I was pleasantly surprised by "Modern Perl". The basic premise is: here we are in 2011 (well, now 2012), with lots of powerful Perl 5.16 core (and CPAN) modules at our disposal. Let's actually _use_ them to write robust, consistent Perl programs.There's significant coverage of Moose (for doing OOP in an arguably superior way), all manner of popular and useful idioms, and a rather thorough exposition of Perl language features, shortcomings, and gotchas.In my opinion, this is not a book for beginners. The reader should already have a rudimentary grasp of Perl, and at least a small bit of experience working with it.All in all, beautifully done content. But please enlist an editor to review the Kindle edition, guys. Too many unnecessary typos. And it looks like footnotes did not get rendered properly as footnotes, instead appearing inline with the content they're supposed to annotate. Annoying.

This book was enjoyable, informative, and it reacquainted me with my old friend Perl.Perl and I used to have so much fun together. Back in the day (2000-2010), Perl was my right hand man. I used C/C++ and SQL to write project code, and Perl to analyze, automate, simulate, emulate, innovate, prototype, test, and generally blast obstacles out of the way. Some of my colleagues and managers were frightened of Perl - it was voodoo as far as they were concerned. A manager who clearly didn't get it chided me for bringing this Unix thing into his cozy little Windows shop, "Why would you use this Perl thing when you have Visual Basic available to you?" Yes, such a question can make one wince. However, Perl got results, quickly, and Perl culture was a blast.I switched jobs, and found PowerShell had become the socially-acceptable scripting language for the Windows side, Python was the lingua franca for the Linux side, and Ruby was de rigeur for Chef for both sides. Absent a role, my old friend faded from view. Such is life in DevOps.As it turns out, my old friend is now even more muscular, and still quite the party animal. However, this book shows that Perl has gotten some nice new features.To be quite clear - this is NOT a book to use to learn Perl. Stick with the Llama book for that. This book assumes that you are using it to get reacquainted, and it succeeds wonderfully at that.

I teach Perl at a community college and plan to start using this book for the upcoming term. It teaches modern techniques; but is still adequate for a beginner. It also covers several more advanced topics (like MOOSE), so will make a valuable addition to a student's library. Best of all, the price is right (especially for college students who are used to paying over $100 for a book).

If you can already program, this book is an incredible way to pick up modern perl. It's something you might not be aware of when you first approach the language, but there's a ton of material out there that teaches "the old (less than ideal) way." This book will save you from that.

I'm just starting to work in Perl after working in PHP (mostly with Drupal and WordPress) for 3 years. This book offers a fantastic introduction to a language that has a lot of history and culture supporting it. The writing style makes me feel like I'm sitting in a peer session with the author, and is very easy to digest. Make sure you follow along with the instructions, there's something special about actually typing along with an author vs trying to just read and remember. Get that muscle memory down :)Thanks for writing such a fantastic book!
