I became a biblical skeptic some years ago and in my unbiased study of it; particularly the Old Testament, I began to come to the conclusion that the Hebrew "God" concept was developed out of some sort of political ambition. The Hebrew name for "God" in Genesis 1:1 is Elohim. This name denotes plurality and is used to describe the creator, as well as various idol gods and such. I came to the conclusion that there must be some sort of Hebrew pantheon that the average Sunday school teacher does not know about. I have not yet finished the book; due to conflicting interests, but so far so good. Maria Mies is a Marxist feminist scholar who is renowned for her theory of capitalist-patriarchy, which recognizes third world women and difference. Wow. I'm really surprised that no one has reviewed this book either in support of it or against it. Even though this book is more than a quarter of a century old, the concepts within it are more relevant today than they were when Mies wrote this back in the mid 1980's. Mies predicted the impact of unrestrained capitalism (born in the wake of the Cold War) on the atomization of women from all socio-economic backgrounds and across all borders. Mies offers within this book, an in-depth analysis of a concept she has coined as the process of 'housewifization', where in capitalist institutions shape global policy and perception in order to exploit women in the role of laborers from the underdeveloped world, who produce non-prodcutive consumer goods for consumption by women living in the developed world, who are objectified by capitalist systems and mobilized as one unifying class of housewives as consumers of these goods and services. Mies also details the interplay between the advent of automation and technology within the production process and how these processes have played a role in the dehumanization of people and the destruction of our environment. Mies does invoke some Marxist ideology within her writing but with a gender twist, something that Marx did not acknowledge in his analysis of capitalism. This book is a must read for students of gender studies, history, economics, geography and politics.

This is a neglected classic by an eminent German political economist. Feminists who have focused on analyzing the cultural manifestations of patriarchy will find it an eye-opener as it explains feminist economics. Learn how women produce most of the world's food but are not allowed to accumulate a surplus on their wages, to own or manage more than a tiny fraction of the world's private land, and are the unpaid "base" of market economics with their subsistence, domestic, and reproductive labor. An inspiring writer with an important economic analysis.

"Patriarchy and Accumulation on a World Scale" answers EVERYTHING.How capitalism grew out of patriarchy, the "blind spot" of Marx that includes most of humanity, the invention of the housewife, how "first world" and "third world" women are two sides of the same fabric, violence against women, violence against subsistence workers, the new international male culture, body autonomy, how women's labor is rendered invisible, the failure of socialist states, the implications of technological advancement, and the increasing "housewification" of labor (which has unfolded exactly as she predicted in the ensuing 30 years).If that's not enough for one (elegantly written) book, Mies goes on to introduce a NEW THEORY OF LABOR which is stunning in its aptness. She also lays out a vision for women across the globe uniting against the international division of labor.I could hardly contain myself in the joy of having all these seemingly contradictory pieces of a horrible (patriarchal capitalist) puzzle finally aligned so succinctly in my head. In sum, this is the most important book I have ever read.My only critique of the book is Mies' theory of the evolution of patriarchy. It veers into biological determinism, while the same breath claiming to denounce biological determinism. It is perplexing, and I wish I could ask her to clarify her thinking directly. But do not let this deter you: Her thinking everywhere else is clear and prophetic.

One of the top smartest and best books I've read in the last few years. She nails it. Accumulation is picking up at the expense of the world's women and the environment.

I have a good-sized feminist library and cannot understand why it has taken me so long to finally find a summa of feminist theory that acknowledges that men and women have qualitatively different relations to nature based on female capacity to directly produce with their bodies vs male compensation by developing a predatory, parasitic mode of "production" based on appropriation, killing, and kidnapping. The source of male domination, she asserts, is the male monopoly on weapons. Mies has a sure grasp of Marxism and in particular demolishes the classical Marxist idea that women's work of propagation, subsistence labor (growing food and so on), housework, and working for low wages or in kind in the informal economy, is not productive labor. The old Marxist distinctions between reproductive and productive labor, production and consumption, and use and exchange fall apart when these bases of women's labor are brought back into the concept of production. In this sense Mies goes farther than any other Marxist feminists I have read, who will insist that "housework" or "domestic" labor be included, and may discuss subsistence unpaid labor such as work in family fields, but who will not attempt to draw in women's propagation of the species as production. Her concise discussions of the witch craze, Engels, the history of western colonization, coerced consumerism, and a devastating critique of capitalism are each woth a full book in another's hands. Her globalism is the defining and most valuable feature of the book. We finally see the full scope of patriarchy. She wrote in the full flower of anti-feminist postmodernism, in the 1980s, and seems to have been unaffected by its destructive impact on feminist theory. Highly recommended.

This book was an easy read and has become a staple on my team. It's on my boss's list of favorite books and now that I read it I know why. This book is a MUST for anyone in any sort of leadership role.

Sir Richard Burton's Travels in Arabia and Africa is a handsomely printed and nicely illustrated , outsized paperback containing a printed version of four lectures presented by Sir Richard. At the time these lectures were presented he was serving as Her Majesty's Consul to Brazil and among his audience were members of the the royal household of Brazil. Sir Richard was not a professional speaker and as explained in the editors introduction and biography of Burton, generally limited his lectures to specialized, professional societies. Propriety and the requirements of his position would have restrained him from being either too shocking or other than traditional. I had hoped to find some traces of the wild man of his rather extensive and accomplished reputation, but on reflection he would have accepted the limits of the venue and accepted the need for restraint.Of the many explorations and travels made by Sir Richard Burton, his most famous would be his penetration into the secrets of Mecca and Medina, both while passing as a Muslim pilgrim of the Dervish sect and his expedition to find the headwaters of the Nile. These lectures include many details of his visits to the capitals of the Muslim faith and a slightly incomplete rendition of parts of the Nile Exploration.Biogrophers of Burton are certain that he had converted to the Muslim faith at the time he visited Mecca. If this is true, there is nothing in his account to confirm his conversion. He was an accomplished linguist and had for years before learned to pass as a native in several parts of the then Muslim world. The evidence of the lecture is inconclusive, but favors his expressed claim, that he was not the first or second successful arrival of a non-Muslim into these forbidden cities, but that he was the first to succeed while in the character of a true believer.The remaining lectures have their dramatics and include what would have been typical Victorian racial pride and negativity toward much of the native populations of Africa. Burton is almost matter of fact in describing the dangers of his trip, the regularity of human sacrifice in the African countries while saying little about the nearly desperate attacks on his health that dogged his expeditions.Given the complexity of Burton's relationship with fellow expedition member and future competitor, (if that is the right word) John Speke Burton's description of how Speke was seized in a surprise attack on their camp and suffered 11 spear wounds before escaping is a short and dry moment assigned to what should have been a heart stopping portion of his narrative.Burton was also injured in this attacked but he makes no mention of his wounds. Later, Burton's notes would be only slightly more scandalized by the remains of a mass human sacrifice that had taken place despite Burton's official delivery of a protest against this practice.The book has value to those interested in Sir Richard Burton. The point of view is the usual Victorian assumption of British and White superiority and there is little that might have been considered as unconventional or challenging to Victorian attitudes. For me the descriptions of the Mecca visit were the most vivid of the lectures.

I started watching Andy Schrock's YouTube videos about two and a half years ago, a little while after I started skating. Back then, he was working two jobs, tired, and seemingly miserable. In the time I've been watching, he's started his very own skateboard company, gotten a fiance, had a kid, and published this book. I'm on a perpetual quest to support whatever he does, so I naturally bought it. After having finished it today, I can honestly say this book is the single most relatable thing I have ever read. It's essentially autobiographical, but with obvious necessary dramatization. A large part of it revolves around coping with everyone around you changing, doing drugs, and "growing up" while you remain essentially the same, and sort of cling to your innocence and individuality. His only constant in life is his skateboarding. I think anybody that ever went through being a teenager has something to relate to it, but for a skateboarder, especially a dedicated, obsessive one, as I consider myself to be, it literally feels like I'm reading about myself. Just the thought of somebody else going through so many of the same experiences as me is absolutely therapeutic, and this is now my favorite book that I have ever read. Andy Schrock just made a lifelong supporter out of me.

I loved this book from front to back. I was interested just from reding the description on the back of the book. This book taught me many things I can apply to my life. Such a great and well told story. It makes me repect Andy even more than I already had. I definitely recommend this book to everyone. Even those who are not fond of the sport of Skateboarding.

Excellent book about the life of a skater on the right path. Not many people stay on the straight and narrow. Others are able to bring it back inline when mistakes are made. Andys youtube channel is a great subscribe and keeps your attention. He's goofy...but who isn't.

Amazing book and keep up the good work the book was kinda sad. And love the decks dude keep it up.

I literally couldn't put it down until I was done. Andy Shrock is a talented storyteller and I really hope he writes a sequel to Yesterday Erased.

Bought this book for my 13 yr old son and then got a bunch more for his friends. Its a great way to get them reading more. I think Andy keeps it interesting to boys by going honestly behind the scenes of growing up FOR REAL. He is an honest, respectful person that can serve as a role model while keeping it real. I think this book can also help others that don't have the skateboarding "bug" appreciate all the benefits it brings to kids that choose it.

Good read. I don't read much, as I tend to focus on my own writing (I know what you're going to say and I get it). Putting that aside this book changed my perspective. As a fellow skater, writer, and teen like Drew, I found the book very relatable, easy to understand, and have come to realize Andy knocked this one out of the park. Cant wait to see what he comes out with next.

This is a beautiful piece of work. Although I have been involved with the organization Radical Joy for Hard Times for several years, this book greatly deepened my understanding of what we are up to. I love the section on Joy. It reminded me of the wonderful little book Surprised by Joy by CS Lewis. I also like the analogy to fairy tales, how when the heroine kisses the frog he turns into a prince. I never thought that giving love to a damaged piece of land has that transformative effect. Brilliant. I particularly like the section about the French existentialists, and how what they were facing after WWII was certainly horrifying but nothing like what we are facing today, with the changes in climate on their way destroying human civilization. And I love the discussion about gazing, and the difference between gazing and staring. I recently read a book by the ophthalmologist Jacob Liberman called The Luminous Life, in which he talks about how the pupils enlarge when one is gazing, and how in that condition light comes out of, as well as into, our eyes. There are many other fascinating moments in this book. You can read from beginning to end, or pick and choose the delightful tidbits one at a time.

I began reading Trebbe Johnson's remarkable book just as California was dealing with three deadly wildfires, exacerbated by climate change, that took dozens of human lives, killed untold wildlife and wiped out forests and communities. I loved this book. It comes at just the right time, when those of us who are awake to the environmental, cultural and global mess we are in often feel hopeless and despairing. "Through the jagged cut edge of grief, flows, when I least expect it, the balm of beauty. Seeing and eventually making beauty in sorrow, in damage, in chaos does not deny the dark reality, but it opens [us] to "compassion, connectedness, courage, and even joy." If you want to do but three things in response to the crazy world we live in, try this: Vote. Read this book. Then, practice "guerrilla beauty."
