The Unheard, by Josh Swiller

From Publishers Weekly

Although doctors diagnosed Swiller's deafness early enough to fit him with hearing aids, the young man from Mantattan's Upper West Side still felt different. As a young adult he drifted from college to college, job to job, relationship to relationship, never quite finding what he was looking for: a place beyond deafness. He found that place in the mid-1990s, when the Peace Corps posted him to a remote corner of Zambia. During his two-year stint working in a run-down health clinic in a rural village, he fought for irrigation projects and better AIDS facilities. He befriended a young local who played chess and provided constant counsel in the ways the young white American could—and did—run afoul of local tribesmen (and women) and their age-old ways. Deafness would have provided a unique sensory filter for anyone, yet while Swiller may have his particular aural capabilities, he also has literary talents—an eye, a voice and a narrative talent—in abundance. A story in any other Peace Corps volunteer's hands might have been humdrum, but in Swiller's becomes intensified, like the rigors of day-to-day Zambian life, through deprivation. (Sept.) Review

“I thought I knew about the Peace Corps until I read Josh Swiller's hilarious, troubling, and at times frightening recreation of his time in Zambia. His wit spares no one--least of all himself--and his generosity of spirit encompasses nearly everyone. His experiences in Africa transformed him, and this book will transform readers.” ―Laurence Bergreen, author of Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe“I was riveted by this book from page one. Swiller shouldn't have lived to tell this tale, much less been sent to a village in deepest Africa that the locals called 'Gomorrah.' But he did, and he's returned with something priceless: a story suffused with humor and love about a place where corruption and death were regular visitors. Swiller hears the rhythms of language and life far better than most people with two normal ears.” ―Michael Chorost, author of Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human“As my mother used to say, ‘You got your listening ears on, bub?' This is not gimp chic, nor misery memoir, but a book as deserving, funny and brave as a deaf man digging wells in hardest Africa. Hoo boy. And I thought being blind at the bus depot was harrowing. Yeesh.” ―Ryan Knighton, author of Cockeyed: A Memoir“Josh Swiller was 22 and profoundly deaf when he applied to the Peace Corps in search of adventure. And indeed, adventure he found. His experiences in Zambia are eloquently recounted in his hard-to-put-down memoir of deafness and Africa, 'The Unheard'.” ―The New York Times, Health section“Several ingredients are crucial in a memoir like this: humor, the ability to see enough details to make the scene come alive and a dispassionate compassion. Swiller has them all.” ―Los Angeles Times“[Swiller's] appealing, intelligent narrative serves both as a coming of age story and as a penetrating light into one corner of a tormented continent.” ―Washington Post“Josh Swiller rewrites the familiar African narrative with a purity that makes the tragic beauty of that devastated continent a stunning novelty for readers. We experience the rich, tangible passions of love, honor and revenge in Africa, amplified a thousandfold in the quiet world of the deaf.” ―New York Observer

What a beautiful book! I was so moved by the author's honesty, humor, insight... and grateful for the deeper understanding into what it means to be deaf. As someone who was raised in Africa, I'm grateful to Josh for the eloquence with which he articulates the strange mix of raw, often violent existence and what he calls Africa's grace; the same mix that opens your heart as it breaks it. This book brought to the surface again why I miss Africa so much and why I don't live there any more. I wish Josh had done consecutive stints as a Peace Corps volunteer in village after village so that we could have "The Unheard: A series." As an avid reader of all things African, the greatest compliment I can give Josh Swiller is to put him up alongside Alexandra Fuller. It's an accomplishment he deserves. Bravo!

A talented writer with an incredible story. This book will give you insight into an entirely new world, one most of us will never know. It will also make you laugh out loud, be grateful for where you live, and the friendships you have. A truly beautiful story and life well lived.

I was also a member of that first group of PCV's to serve in Zambia and Josh and I were two of the eight who completed our commitments, although a couple of those who didn't complete their stint left for health reasons. I loved his book, and was unable to put it down once I started on it. I'm only mentioned in the book once, a bit out of character. Page 42: I'm the "middle-aged alcoholic from Michigan" (I object to the "middle-aged" part, as I was but a young lad of 39 at the time). The story of Josh's departure from Munungu was never fully revealed to me until reading the book. Like all government-related organizations, Peace Corps is great at keeping secrets and rumors always abound. Josh and I were not close but we did bond a bit after he returned to Kabwe and was once again teaching the deaf students. It was only upon reading the book that I gained an appreciation for his intellect and the really horrible experiences he had in Munungu. At Peace Corps meetings or functions, he always seemed distracted, not interested, withdrawn. After reading the book, my eyes are opened to what the guy endured up there in Munungu and what being deaf is really all about.I pre-ordered the book, with low expectations. Basically, I was concerned about what he may have said about me. What I did not expect was the clarity and smooth-flow of the narrative, the exceptional descriptors of characters ("voice like firecrackers" comes to mind), the entirely accurate desriptions of life in a bush village. A lot of what he wrote brought tears to my eyes, as I had experienced similar things in my own village of Lukwesa. Plus, I knew or had met a lot of the people he talks about in the book. After reading it, I was ashamed at myself for not getting to know him better while in Zambia those two years, for underestimating his abilities, for not have taken more time while there to help him with his problems instead of selfishly concentrating on my own. The book opened my eyes to a lot of things that were happening right under my nose, but in my hearing ignorance I was blind (equally handicapped) to events as they occurred in regards to brother Josh. My apologies, Josh. This is a great story written by a courageous young man who coped with a host of things (in Zambia as well as dealing with his own deafness) way better than those of us who are not so impaired. I vouch for its truthfulness and content and I know I will be reading it over and over again until the pages are frayed at the corners and the book will lie open voluntarily at whatever page number I'm on.Greg IrishLas Vegas, NevadaMember of Peace Corps Zambia One

I met Josh very briefly about 8 months ago at Gallaudet. One of the friends I was with had arranged to meet him; I just said hello, exchanged pleasantries and left, following the rest of my group. When my friend caught up with the group, she was not too happy because I guess she was expecting Josh to recount his entire time in Africa so she wouldn't have to read the book. After that, I decided that I would read "The Unheard" on the off chance that I would meet Josh and we could have a conversation without the major stumbling block of not having read his book.By the time I got around to reading it, my own hearing loss had recently been diagnosed. It wound up being the perfect timing. I was trying to figure out where I fit in and who I was.The thing that really made this book helpful and successful for me was that it wasn't trying to be more than a memoir. He wrote about his experiences and what it meant in the context of his life. Memoirs can sometimes be so full of delusions of grandeur that they're just not worth reading. The writing was clear and concise without being short or choppy. This book wasn't trying to spell out ways to fix the way the Peace Corps works in Africa or provide a dissertation on the heirarchy within the African diaspora or be a self-help book suggesting you spend two years in the Peace Corps to learn about yourself and fix your problems. I probably wouldn't have made it through the entire book if it had tried any of those things.

Others have given a powerful and complete synopsis of the content of the book. So I'm going to take another tact and strongly recommend it because of its honesty, hubris and humor in presenting the challenges of coping with deafness. With these qualities it shines Light and uses words to describe a powerful experience of cultural compatibility and dissonance from a place of hearing as well as the wisdom/reflection of inner silence. With the highest "magic" of the universe's synchroncity I purchased "the Unheard" the day after I visited a deaf patient and her mother as a chaplain volunteer in a large hospital. I needed to ressurect my basic, rusty sign language to communicate. The next day I heard Josh interviewed on NPR and guessed that his book would sensitize me to communication issues, the deaf community, coping mechanisms, the value of experiencing different cultures, and the search for meaning in life's largest, most encompassing questions. It's all "hear" in Josh's book. I'm starting my second reading. Josh, your are philospher and poet and I hope you know it!

The artist deserves 5 stars, but the book deserves only 2. I had high hopes because this book seemed to unite my love of Frida Kahlo, Dia de los Muertos, vibrant colors and folk art. The artist delivers on the style but the book breaks down on substance. I hate posting negative reviews of an artist's work, and the only reasons I do are- 1) to prevent others from feeling cheated by too many positive reviews, and 2) most importantly, to help the author with any future books.Heather Galler has a great style- very appealing colors and bold lines and patterns. What I'd hoped for from the book was instructions on how to paint in a folk art style, how to see things and draw in that style. I would have loved to see the images that inspired her and how she interpreted them. How did she create the patterned backgrounds and the stylized faces? There are only a few pages at the front of the book that discuss paints, other materials, techniques, styles and interpretation. I mean like 8 total, and that includes several full page paintings and lots of white space. There is only 1 photo of a Chihuahua in a hat and serape next to a painting of the dog, and 3 sentences that basically say I picked this Chihuahua because I like Chihuahuas. You could have fit all 8 pages easily on 2. The remainder of the book is 16 chapters of completed individual paintings with line drawings and instructions to just copy the drawing and then copy the colors. The instructions say things like "With a light purple paint pen, draw random sized polka dots on the purple background" right above a picture of that stage of the painting with purple dots. There are no references to why paint colors were chosen or how you can vary the background, absolutely no room for individual interpretation. This is pretty much a coloring book that you have to transfer to canvas. Several of the reviews mention something like this, but not that every single painting/chapter is like that. I really can't emphasize enough the allover skimpiness of information. The gallery at the back had some very cool paintings (especially the image of Einstein) but with no info on them at all.Overall, this book is a huge disappointment. I'm keeping it because I like her work, but if you see the sample chapter of Frida Kahlo, that's pretty much all there is to the rest of the book- 16 simplified images painted exactly the same way. There's no progression of techniques, just the same instructions over and over again.

This is a great inspirational art book for beginners. I just finished the painting that is on the front cover and had so much fun doing it. There are a few projects that are very basic, e.g. the landscapes and some that have more detail. You may be disappointed if you are already an experienced painter; as I mentioned it is more for people who are just starting out.

As the owner of many original paintings by Heather Galler, this book is a fascinating look into the making of her art. It makes a wonderful coffee table book and conversation piece. It would be a great gift for anyone who appreciates "folk art" or who is a budding artist. The selections of paintings include portraits (such as Frida Kahlo as shown on the cover), animals, cities and landscapes.

I just love Heather Galler's artwork and have ordered quite a few pieces. This book is just awesome and helps you learn how to create folk art yourself.

This book basically gives you templates to trace to reproduce the artist's version of the folk art painting. No info on folk art itself or how to really learn to paint in a folk style. Very disappointed in the book overall.

I've been a Galler fan for several years and this book is wonderful. I would recommend for anyone who enjoys mixed media work and/or folk art.

Absolutely love this book!! I wish this artist had others to buy.

I love this books and it's great easy to follow steps. Templates are available online for each painting. Can't wait to get started!

If you didn't grow up in the city and your reading this book, you'll wonder how Johnny n his friends survived school. Especially through the racial wars. It seems they all had to be violent and know how to fight at the drop of a hat at any given time. Another amazing thing is John was riding the subways at age 5 and knew how to avoid shakedowns buy the pandhandlers. His dad taught him well! SC Pike also offers an in depth look at the back room gambling and betting that went on with Matt A.and some Mob counterparts. Johnny and his dad had an amazing cheat system in place during card games that had me smiling just imagining how he through the signals.Great book!

This book was not what I expected. I thought I was buying a book based on one of Gotti's hit man and his life in "the life". However this book tells the story of John Alite's childhood. I think the author should have condensed the three books. It's an interesting story to a point, but it wasn't gripping.

Darkest Hour is gritty, honest, and raw. It showcases a time and era in the streets of New York long forgotten and swept away by history.John Alite’s tale may only be one of many but is written in such a gripping way to the reader they can’t help but be at the edge of their seat.SC Pike tells a tale of a child born to the streets which raised John to become a killer for a notorious mafia family and how he now takes his knowledge and applies it to help children escape the kind of life and better themselves. This is an intriguing story of survival and redemption.

This is the worst and I mean worst book I've ever read. I have read every Mafia book that has been written. This was the most boring one of all. The whole book was about his childhood not one thing about his interaction with the Mafia. I'd love to get my money back. Horrible read.I wouldn't give it any stars but you have to give it a least one.

I couldn’t put this book down! S.C. Pike grabs your attention in Chapter 1 with the early life story of John Alite, a notorious Mafia Enforcer, and doesn’t let it go! The perils that John faces during his childhood and young adult life that lead him to being a hit man are perfectly captured in this book, and you will be surprised to discover that you actually like him...guaranteed! Can’t wait for Book 2!

Don't bother. It is poorly written. No message just self serving crap. Whoa is me and idiotic excuses. Stay away.

Typical mafia yarn, nothing new or different than dozens of other mob books.

Has nothing to do with the mafia. The entire book is his childhood.

Spanish Colonial Style: Santa Barbara and the Architecture of James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig

Review

"The red-tile roofs, white stucco walls, and wood-beam ceilings that have become synonymous with Santa Barbara’s Spanish-derivative architecture are owed as much to architects James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig. . . [Spanish Colonial Style] anthologizes James Osborne Craig’s works spanning 1915 to 1922 and Mary McLaughlin Craig’s later embellishments (from 1923 until 1956), creating a fluid evolution of the aesthetic that made Santa Barbara architecturally relevant on an international scale."-ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST

This is a excellent compilation of works by James Craig and Mary Craig. This book covers several architectural and interior designs of Santa Barbara style homes. In my quest for information on this subject I just by chance came upon it. I have many books that direct attention to the Spanish colonial period but this book really covers the subject well. The revival of the period came about in Los Angeles when up and coming societal families were engaging artists to create luxury homes. Los Angeles with its Mediterrean climate lended a hand in the decision of selecting designs of old Spanish colonialism. The vegetation of the Los Angeles basin strikes a wonderful accent to the stark white and umber browns. Many of the colonial homes still stand in their glory and since many were built in the Santa Barbara region, they have absorbed the name into their description.I have used this book to identify the architectural qualities of the home that I am renovating. The home was originally of Spanish colonial design. The design has lost its way with interpretations that infuse other periods into the whole and I am trying to redirect these into a strong Spanish motif. I am using the information from this book to better enhance those qualities that are already manifested in the building. I am very keen on the details of the period. This book defines the Spanish Colonial period through the arched doorways, and textural highlights. Whole houses are examined, from the blue prints to the finishing touches of exterior lighting. Examples are given of various handrails, as well as the styling of fireplaces. If you are renovating an existing home or savoring the elegance of the period, this is a collection of drawings and photographs that you will enjoy reviewing. I highly endorse this collection.

For those who love Spanish Colonial Style architecture, as I do, this is a fabulous book. And for those who love the architectural style of Santa Barbara homes and buildings this is for you. The research is excellent. The photographs are beautiful. It is a wonderful history of two amazing people who influenced the style and beauty of Santa Barbara homes and offices.

This is an excellent study of James Osborn Craig's designs in Santa Barbara. It is quite complete and well photographed. It is an excellent addition for those who are interested in Spanish Colonial Revival Architecture.

Beautiful book!

Wonderful Book.

Excellent well researched text...much new information on early Santa Barbara families. Historic photographs.

Expected more pictures.

Pinkola Estes is not only a reputed Jungian psychologist but also a natural storyteller. She is able to link and connect naturally dream themes, concrete dreams from real people, world legends, fairytales and myths, and look at dreams as part of a whole, as a world of magic that is interrelated to other worlds of magic. She has a very mellow soothing voice, perfect for a therapist, but her whispering is not only a sweet song to your ears, but also a deep poetic and humorous exploration of our dream world. I loved some of the stories she tells, and the fact that her analysis of the motifs is really rich, deep and colourful, multifaceted, and not the usual monolithic this theme means this, and that theme means that. These themes have been discussed in many dream dictionaries and dreamwork books, but I found that Pinkola Estes's analysis brings many more things to the table than other analysts. The themes or motifs that Pinkola Estes discusses in this book are the following: 1/Animal dreams. 2/ Flying dreams. 3/ Precognitive dreams. 4/ Snake dreams. 5/ Paralysis dreams. 6/ Incommunication dreams. 7/ Dreams of blood. 8/ Disaster dreams. 9/ End of the world dreams. 10/ Dreams about giving birth. 11/ Dreams about finding a baby. 12/ Dreams about finding of losing a treasure. 13/ Teeth dreams. 14/ Toilet dreams. 15/ Dark force dreams with a nasty man or woman. 16/ Sexual dreams. 17/ and dreams of nakedness. The most important things that you'll learn from this work (beyond the interpretations and meanings that Pinkola Estes attaches to the discussed motifs) are the following: 1/ Your dreams are yours, and must be interpreted and be related to who you are, your life, circumstances, psyche and soul, and no cookie-cutter of an interpretation will fit two different people. Symbols are universal, but also fit into the psyche of different people in different ways because they are infused in the individual psyche they sit on. 2/ You cannot disregard or ignore the instinctive feeling you get when you have a dream about what or whom the dream relates to. In the past, I have found to be true for me. 3/ Dreams are not only individual, but relate to themes, symbols ad stories contained in old legends and myths and they are part of an interrelated magic world that is also very real, a world pregnant with meaning, a whispering voice that comes from your own unconscious. When your dream relates to a specific theme and that theme makes sense to you, you will get an aha moment, like two piece of a magneto getting together when put together. 4/ Finally, as the title of the book hints, dreams are like riddles, pun confusing intricate queries that are embedded with a message from your psyche to you.The main downsides of the book are three. Firstly, Pinkola Estes' tone is a bit flat and lacks coloratura, so I found difficult to keep engaged and focused for long periods of time. Secondly, these lectures should be about themes in women's dreams, but many of the themes discussed here are not specific to women, but general dream themes that everybody has; it is not always clear in which way the discussion differs if they are dreamed by men or women and, besides, sometimes the author clearly states that the theme is universal. Thirdly, the author has a tendency to talk assuming that things in our heads are as clear regarding the connection between motifs, myths, legends and specific dreams as are in hers. Finally, the question arises, if dreams are individual and particular to each person, and myths and legends are Universal, how exactly universal themes relate differently to different individuals? This is a very enjoyable audiobook, quick to listen to, and one of those books that you want to listen to more than once.

I really enjoyed listening to this. Clarissa Pinkola Estes has shown that she has great insight into women's dreams and what she said truly resonated with me. She also has a very lovely speaking voice - which makes a huge difference to how I receive the information. I have enjoyed her work since "Women Who Run With The Wolves" and this was not disappointing in any way.

As always Clarissa tells a story that engages you fully. I just love her wisdom and NEVER tire of listening to her talk. I love metaphors, they really create an understanding to life.

Her work is a gift to humanity.

...i adore the mythology woven throughout...

This author has the most depth, and versatility of any author I have ever red. This is most informative and educational material about the subject of dreams and our complex being.

Love the Myron Bolitar character, and loved his blonde "enforcer" preppy, Win, even more. What smooth guys. Batman and Robin were never this cool. Hot babes in it, too. Read this book. I think you'll also enjoy it....

DEAL BREAKER is the first in Harlan Coben's new series staring sports agent Myron Bolitar. I must say I cheated a bit by reading two of the Bolitar series before the first. However, this did not detract from my enjoyment of the first. Bolitar, an ex-college and NBA standout switched to being a sports agent and part-time private eye after a crippling injury forced him to drop out of NBA competition. Harlan Coben, an accomplished and award-winning mystery writer ably develops believable plots with compelling characters. Myron Bolitar manifests humor, striking good looks and a magnetic personality that turns women's heads and makes men sit up and take notice. Myron's best friend and business partner, Windsor Horne Lockwood III, better known as, Win, is the wealthy intellect of the company who loves to kick ass and kill if necessary. The beautiful Esperanza, Myron's secretary, once women's national professional wrestling champion who fought under the name, Pocohontas, adds humor and organization to Myron's outer office. Myron lands his first big client, rookie quarterback, Christian Steele. All goes well until Steele's fiancee, Kathy Culver, turns up missing. When no trace of her is found after 18 months she is presumed dead and law enforcement stops looking. Enters the gorgeous and charming Jessica Culver, Kathy's older sister and Myron's former live-in girlfriend. Jessica convinces Myron to help locate her little sister who she believes is still alive. Soon the sisters' father, and Kathy's ex-roommate turn up dead. The story is a multi-plotted page turner that keeps the reader on his toes. The ending is typical Coben—lengthy and perplexing. Deal Breaker is an action packed great starter for the Bolitar series. I give the novel a strong 4-star rating.

The Bolitar series has never let me down. I enjoy reading Harlan Coben's books - there's always a number of twists and turns in them, though this one seemed more predictable than some of the others in the series. This is a quick read and enjoyable. Was always wondering how Myron ended up with Jessica - it's here in the first novel. It's no wonder that Jessica has a thing for Myron given his work in helping here find out what happened to her sister (don't want to give away too much).

DEAL BREAKER is the first novel in the Myron Bolitar series, but I have to admit, I didn't read this book until recently.Which turns out to be a good thing, because had this been the first Harlan Coben novel I'd ever read, I'd have never picked up another book by the same author again. Why?Because of the ending. Chapter 46, to be exact, in which there's a dialog between the main protagonist, Myron, and his sidekick, Win; a chapter and a dialogue that exists for the sole purpose of explaining the plot. Many thriller and mystery writers have to resort to this kind of dialogue, but if handled skillfully, it does not wake the reader from the fictive dream. Whereas the rest of the book was very meticulously thought out and carefully, and, indeed, skillfully written, this particular chapter was sloppy, rushed, and completely unbelievable.Where was his editor in all this? Were it not for Chapter 46, I'd have given this book four stars. It was well written and well thought out. I'd have taken away a star because the plot was over-contrived, and even without the infamous, and bafflingly atrocious Chapter 46, the ending was still not handled the way I would have liked. Coben does a great job in his other books, believe me, and if I'm so tough on this particular novel, it's because I've grown accustomed to--okay, spoiled by--a much higher caliber of exposition.Authors are humans too. Even the best of them. Some books they write simply don't compare with the rest. Some are leagues above, some lightyears below. They are the statistical outliers in the writer's long list of published works. This novel might be important to some because it is the first in the series. If you are one of those readers, by all means, start off with few expectations, then go ahead and read DEAL BREAKER. Otherwise, do yourself and the gifted Mr. Coben a favor--give this one a miss.

I enjoyed this first Myron Bolitar mystery. Bolitar is the kind of competent, smart-mouthed character that I like as the hero of a mystery. I have rather more mixed feelings about his partner Win who seems to me a little amoral or sociopathic for my taste.Bolitar is a sports agent negotiating a contract for a talented quarterback when the story begins. He and the quarterback have a connection. The quarterback was the fiance of a young woman who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The young woman was the sister of a woman Bolitar had a romance with and who he hasn't gotten over. Now the woman is back in town because her father was killed and she is sure that there must be some connection between her father's death and her sister's disappearance. Bolitar and Win begin investigating and are soon deep into the porn trade and the seedy side of negotiating contracts for pro athletes.Bolitar is quick with a quip and dogged in his pursuit of the truth about what happened to Kathy Culver. I liked the twists and turns in the plot. The murderer came as a surprise to me but, looking back, I can see some hints that I overlooked as I was reading.I am eager to read more of the books in this series and will have to add them to my wishlist. It looks like I have nine more novels to read in order to catch up.

Such a great book on anger, engaging and excellently written

My two year loves this book.

There is always a need for biblical counseling in the church. Whether it is a couple trying to save their marriage or parents dealing with their wayward teenager, the ministry of biblical counseling serves as a guide to counsel from God’s Word. Married couples and parents need it. Teenagers ought to heed it. But what about younger kids? Oftentimes, the scope of biblical counseling seems to apply to only adults and teenagers. Yet, as Christians who believe the Bible applies to all of life for all stages of life, doesn’t God’s Word give direction and counsel for children too? The publishers of New Growth Press believe so and have put forth biblical counseling for kids in their new “Good News For Little Hearts” children’s book series.Jax Squirrel and the Problem of AngerIn this volume of the series, Jax’s Tail Twitches: When You Are Angry, we meet Jax and the Squirrel family as they prepare to gather acorns for the winter. The book opens with Jax and his brother, Caspian, arguing. Jax’s anger is on display from the beginning. When it comes time for the family to go out and gather acorns, Jax and Caspian get into another spat and Jax, in anger, begins fighting with his brother. This story doesn’t only highlight Jax’s anger. The anger of the whole Squirrel family comes to the light as they meet and argue with the McNuffle family over acorns. After these incidents, Papa Squirrel realizes his wrongful response of anger and uses it as a lesson to teach his family from the “Great Book” on how anger arises out of each of their hearts because of what they want and why anger does not produce the right and good life God wants them to have. He shows them from the “Great Book” that when they get angry, they need to apologize and ask for forgiveness and they can be forgiven because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross for sinners. Each member of the Squirrel family, including Jax, ask each other for forgiveness and reconcile with the McNuffle family as they remember forgiveness comes through Jesus Christ.Creatively Counseling Children on AngerJax’s Tail Twitches, edited by David Powlison and illustrated by Joe Hox, uses this story about Jax’s tail twitching to teach children an important lesson on dealing with anger. The book uses the imagery and characters of this story to creatively counsel children from God’s Word when they are angry. This tale does not end with a mere moral lesson either. Biblical counselor David Powlison makes sure to show we can be forgiven when we confess our anger based on the good news of Jesus Christ. This book and series show biblical counseling is not just for big people; it is for little hearts as well. It is biblical counseling for elementary-aged kids. This book is so much more than a book, though. Parents will appreciate the resources found in the back of the book, including a list of how to help their child with anger as well as back pocket Bible verses to cut out or copy for their children to use. If you are a parent who has a child that struggles with anger and you are unsure how to confront this problem, begin the conversation by taking them through Jax’s Tail Twitches: When You Are Angry today!I received this book from New Growth Press in exchange for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own and are my honest review of the book.

Jax's Tail Twitches: When You Are Angry is one of three new releases in the Good New For Little Hearts series from New Growth Press and CCEF. As a member of a church that is very committed to Biblical Counseling I was very intrigued by this new series. CCEF has produced many quality resources for adults that have been very beneficial to me and countless others. The idea that these same truths would now be made available to kids in story book form had me very excited for their release.  The series brings gospel truth to children by "focusing on an animal family's real-life issues, encouraging young readers toward a growing relationship with Jesus in the midst of challenging circumstances."Jax's Tail Twitches begins with Jax the squirrel reacting in anger because his brother Caspian trips him and beats him to breakfast. At breakfast we are introduced to the rest of Jax's family and shortly will see all of them, except baby Jolie, react to different situations in anger. While collecting nuts for the winter Papa gets angry at a neighbor who is taking nuts from his tree. Caspian continues to pick on Jax and Jax reacts in anger again. During all of the feuding Mama forgets about dinner that is cooking and after discovering that it is burned she is angry too! Jax recognizes that the entire family seems to get angry when they don't get what they want. This leads Papa to recognize everyone's anger and address it with Scripture and prayer. Each family member then ask for forgiveness from the others and Papa also reconciles with his neighbor. The book closes with a section called Helping Your Child With Anger. Here the author gives 9 points from Scripture to further discuss with your children. This is where the biblical counseling influence of CCEF is most clearly seen. This section definitely turns the book into a resource to be used over and over again with your children. There is also a Back Pocket Bible Verse section with Bible verses for kids to carry with them for when they are angry. This is a very nice addition to the book. The illustrations of the book are also very well done. Jax's Tail Twitches is a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and churches to connect the truths of Scripture with different struggles that children will face. The writing style is engaging, the illustrations are wonderfully done, and the biblical truths are clearly communicated. I would highly recommend this book to any Christian that regularly interacts with young children. I received a copy of this book from New Growth Press in exchange for an honest review.Â
