Each negotiating tactic and each example Johnston discussed triggered memories of past negotiations in my career - job offers, salary negotiations, business contracts, even past purchases and relationships - that went horribly awry and for which I felt I got the short end of the stick. And I realized as I read - and re-read - the examples Johnston provided what I might have done differently to have achieved happier outcomes.

It could be just me. I like examples of people accomplishing their goals or failing as the other guy but I want to learn about the mechanism behind it. This book doesn't talk about anything related to psychology behind the process. I don't think I found more than 10% of the contents useful.

Having been a startup entrepreneur and tried to convince large companies to invest/partner/become a customer, I can relate to many of the lessons in this book and wish I had read it then. It is somewhat repetitive and some of the examples chosen aren't quite apt, but many of the insights related to business negotiations are spot-on and useful. Not that they are easy to put in practice necessarily --- that is a different ball game. Overall a great read, definitely worth it --- it'll likely make you think, and has insights that I don't recall reading/seeing in other books on negotiation. The anecdote on the photographer and the US government was particularly well chosen.

This book changed my life. Absolutely would recommend it!

We visited the Hoover Dam about 20 years ago, took the behind-the-scene tours and was fascinated by the magnitude of, well, everything there! I read a borrowed copy of this book then which brought an even deeper appreciation for men behind the near impossible construction of the dam and the complex support system necessary for a project of this size.I thought about it from time to time over the years, so decided to read it again recently. This is a very entertaining and well written story of an American treasure, especially for those of us who have a construction background.

This book was really interesting. The author on occasion made attempts to be a bit flowery with his writing, but his description of all that was involved in building Hoover Dam is in great detail and he obviously did a LOT of research. I found it particularly interesting living in the Las Vegas area, having visited the dam on a number of occasions, and visiting Boulder City often as well. This book ads a lot of color not only to the building of the dam but the political atmosphere as well. I found the information about down stream very interesting as well, the efforts to control the river, venturing into Mexico, and the great benefit the dam (and others along the Colorado River) have had on farming in California.

An extremely well written tale of the inception and construction of Hoover Dam. It covers the political aspects, the big business aspects, and especially the human aspects of building the dam in a time frame that would be virtually impossible today. One cannot help but marvel about the orchestration of men, material, and machines in close concert as the construction surged ahead.

I purchased this book after reading a review about it on someone's blog. The book presents the fascinating history of the planning and building of the Hoover Dam. I was particularly struck by the descriptions of the working conditions that the workers endured. While the text appeared to be fairly dense, it was actually a fast read. The only real complaint I have about the book is that I think it could have used a few more maps to help the reader get a sense for where things were. I believe there was one map, and it wasn't very details. If you are at all interested in the history surrounding the construction of the Hoover Dam I highly recommend getting this book.

With all of the negative press we are currently seeing, it's good to look back at what Americans can accomplish when they work together as a team.

An excellent historical account, covering all aspects of the planning and building of the dam. Very well written and very interesting. Highly recommended.

I bought this as a gift for my nephew. I was embarrassed by it's poor quality and generic illustration. It even has an half story in the back as an advertisement to buy other books. The story line was not interesting, not even for a 2 year old

It was a purchased for my 2.5 year old son. He loves it. We are trying to introduce him to the language and it's great that it reflects body parts and activities that toddlers do. Although, it does not have a pronounciation key, I'm sure that can remedied by using translation tools.

the bilingual is nice but there are some literal translations which are inaccurate.

Good book for babies. Mine is almost 2 and she enjoys this book.

Simple baby/toddler book. Contains some errors in the translation and grammar. Illustrations are nice.

great way to keep the Italian in a bi-lingual home.

Always difficult to choose online but it's a great book for the preschool children who are learning Italian.

Thank God so many things have changed for women in Ireland not completely but better!! A great read in the fact that progress has been made and that medieval Ireland is in the past..RIP Kerry Babies...

This story shocked and repelled me. The way this woman was treated by thoughtless and powerful men is disturbing and sadly happens too frequently. This book raises the awareness of how the innocent and marginalised so easily become the victim of male authority. Even when logic and good sense would seem to be a minimum requirement in understanding another human being's plight, this is sadly lacking. Hypocrisy from Church and the justice system is rife. I had to read this book - not because I enjoyed its content but because I need to take a stand in never allowing this incident to reoccur.Deirdre

I had to constantly remind myself that this tragedy took place in 1984, and not the 1950’s. Joanne came within a hair of being imprison and absolve later by DNA.

The book is hard to read in places, but it shows how easy it is to get mixed up in problems that would have been much easier to solve earlier. It also shows how families can be affected by one mistake.I felt truly sorry for the victim, and no pity at all for the father.

Still one of my favorite books of all time. I can't even tell how many times I have shared or given a copy of this book to a friend.

After the death of my most important loved one, I contemplated life and living without him in it...It was a dark path down a frightening road; not even a flicker of light met me on the road ahead. A friend lent me this book and I read it cover to cover in one sitting...and, amazingly I realized that someone understood me and my pain. I bought myself a copy and dragged it with me everywhere I went-it was for me as my blanky had been as a child. I read it over and over until it fell apart. I have since bought at least 6 more copies of this book, intending to keep them. And yet, somehow, I always found myself giving it away to someone I cared about. The day I bought my Kindle Fire, I downloaded it and still always have it with me...and I am not giving this copy away. :) I do however, still find myself buying this book for friends... I now read it when I am feeling content, scared, happy, or sad-it seems to speak to me regardless of my mood. When I say this book saved my life- I mean it. Surviving a loved one's suicide is the most intense grief I have ever, and will ever, experience - but this book kept my pain at bay and my loved ones from experiencing the pain of my not possibly being here. Whenever I felt the darkness creeping in, and the hope disappearing, I reached for this book and in all senses of the word-THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE AND TAUGHT ME HOW TO LIVE in a brighter, happier, and purposeful life!

A delightful, thought-provoking book that requires a second, slower and more contemplative read.My initial thoughts are that this book could be summed appropriately with the philosophy "Don't sweat the small stuff. And don't sweat the big stuff either. In fact, don't sweat at all."Equally though, it also counsels not to get overly ecstatic or confident when things go your way.The key seems to be not to let hurdles, obstacles or setbacks get you too down for too long. Equally, to not let successes think you cannot fail. Be calm and mild, either way.So, wherever you are, at any time, start from there, taking a middle path of not too much fear or sadness as well as not too much confidence and elation. After all, all feelings and situations are temporary.I'm glad I read it and look forward to having time to read it again slowly and contemplatively.

I made a decision that I wanted to be more compassionate and the same day was the first time I had ever heard of Pema Chodron. I read Amy Poehler's book and she mentioned Pema Chodron and then a week later I saw an interview Oprah did with Pema Chodron. I knew I had to find out more. I saw this book, bought it, and read it slowly. It is so diversely simple that I had to take my time to process the slogans and meanings. I really enjoyed the stories and getting to know myself while injesting the lessons about being compassionate and being human.

I was recently introduced to this author through her "Compassion Cards" series and decided to buy this on a whim - I'm so glad I did! The concept of taking everything you're going through (good, bad, and neutral) and using it to your benefit is inspiring, and I look forward to putting this into practice in my life.

This book is outstanding clearly written and magnificent in its clarity.Start where you are says it all you don't need to be in a monastery to become enlightened. Cheers

If your heart's been broken (enough), it can be hard to find your way back to a space where you can launch some love for others, where you can understand, much less forgive ... and just, go on -- in a good way! -- not victimized by your own obsessive, wounded thinking. If you find you are angry all the time, how do you heal? How do you find your way back to yourself? It seems Buddhists have been examining the problems that attend upon managing our own difficult human natures for a long time. Evidently, Pema Chodron is in the big boat with us, struggling with the same stuff. I feel better for having read this book. Nothing is solved -- but at least I have some well-tested tools, that for starters, won't make things worse and may even make things better, with practice. Highly recommended ...

This book seriously made an impact on me. Pema Chödrön's writing is clear, creative and beautiful. I feel myself slipping into a different headspace when I read this book. It may be a coincidence - but I bought this book and read it twice in February: the following months since then have been some of the most transformative of my life thus far.

You should know that the CD Audio Book CDs have .WAV files on them rather than regular CD files or .MP3s. The reader is clear and easy to follow. If you liked the book, I think you'll like the CD version too.I picked this book after reading Eckart Tolle's New Earth. Pema Chodron speaks to many of the same issues from a little different perspective that, while perhaps more religious, seems clearer to me; more understandable. At the same time, I also think it's possible that many of us need to read both perspectives to gain a better understanding.I was attracted to this book by the title. Being able to Start Where You Are was an empowering notion. It was the idea that I don't need to wait till I (grow up, finish school, lose weight, get married, get divorced, get a job, retire) to (develop spiritually, be happy, find peace). Most particularly I don't need to stop suffering to be happy, or start my journey. Instead, I can use my suffering to facilitate my development & growth. The CD version is true to all of these ideas.

Before there were selfies and Facebook updates, there were memoirs like this one where the voice of the author is authentic and the story of his life is told with humility and honesty. I loved it. I loved learning about the places in Handy's life that became touchstones for how this Alabama native intersected with music and how the music around him informed his life and in doing so moved him to validate with his own spirit and craft the genre of music called "the blues." Handy's life story is about more than the blues, however. He was an early performer in the now controversial minstrel shows, traveled on steamboats like Mark Twain and Louis Armstrong, and was an innovative businessman, establishing with his colleague Harry Pace a music company in New York that will celebrate it's 100th anniversary next year--still existing on the Avenue of the Americas after all this time. Of course, my interest in Handy's life was triggered by Nat King Cole playing Handy in the movie titled after Handy's most famous song: "St Louis Blues." And, no, I didn't just read this book--I just finished reading it for the second time. It's that good.

This is a look at how jazz and blues began, from the man who was instrumental in getting it started. W.C. Handy tells us how the transition was made from marches, classical music, dance music, Stephen Foster, vaudville tunes and folk blues to the arranged and orchestrated blues and jazz of the 20th Century. Not only did Handy help create the music, but he also helped preserve it through recordings and publications. In this book, he tells in detail how he came to compose his most famous pieces, including Memphis Blues, St. Louis Blues and Beale Street Blues. Handy is a superb storyteller who paints a vivid picture of life in the Reconstruction South, and the world of the African-American entertainer during the minstrel show days and the birth of the jazz era.

As someone who lives in Florence, AL, it was incredibly moving to read Mr. Handy's account on his life growing up in the area. It's amazing to know that he walked down the same downtown city streets that I do today. The writing is entertaining and honest. I would encourage anyone with a curiosity about Mr. Handy's life or the history of blues music to read this book.

every blues aficionado needs this book

Like many autobiographies, this book is best before Handy becomes WC Handy the great and venerated music composer and publisher. Handy describes coming up in the hard world of the South in the years that Reconstruction was being demolished and Jim Crow segregation was being imposed. Handy's childhood decision to become a musician flew in the face of his family's and much of the Black church (Handy's father was a minister) world's view that being a musician of any kind was hardly better than becoming a criminal.Classically trained in both the violin and the trumpet and in composition and harmony, Handy always looked to the folk music of working class and farming African Americans and to rhythms and music he knew came from Africa as his source of inspiration. In fact, when Handy became a music professor at a Black state-run college in Alabama, he ended up resigning when the administration frowned on his teaching the students to venerate the music their people created. Handy gives some interesting stories of life in the Black ministrel companies he worked in. These companies were a focal point of Black entertainment between the civil war and the second world war. Not only did 19th Century figures like Banjoist Horace Weston, and the early 20th Century dance and comedy men like Bert Williams and Bill Robinson graduate from minstrelsy to Broadway, but 20th century stars like Louis Jordan, Dizzy Gillespie, and Rufus Thomas got their start in minstrel shows. These shows trained musicians and singers who became the founding stars of blues and Jazz. One such minstrel troupe had Classic Blues Divas Ma Rainey, Clara Smith, and Bessie Smith, all on the same bill. Handy discusses the danger and persecution Black minstrel companies faced in the Jim-Crow South. The railroad coach his company traveled in contained secret compartments to hide the Black entertainers from police and lynch mobs as well as places to store firearms for self-defense. Handy tells several stories that make clear that W.C. Handy might never have survived to write the Memphis and St. Louis Blues without the secret compartment or self defense with firearms. Contrary to popular misconceptions, the blues is not an ancient form of Black musical expression. It arose in the 1890s and early 20th century. Handy grew up in Alabama, lived in Kentucky, and Mississippi and was headquartered for years in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the big town in the area that produced Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, and Johnny Lee Hooker, He had heard old time Black banjo and fiddle tunes since childhood. Yet, he did not hear the blues until the early 20th Century.He points out that the real "inspiration" for him to incorporate the blues into the music he wrote for his dance band came in a small town in Mississippi where his band played a dance. The country people demanded that a ragged blues trio of mandolin, guitar, and bass play a few song. As Handy and his band were tired, they welcomed the opportunity to take a break. However with the three blusicians were finished, the crowd showered more money on them for a few songs than Handy's whole band received for a whole night's work.Playing for Black dancers, Handy explained how he had to incorporate the blues and other rhythms and music that came from Africa into his music. Then, Handy is always insistence that the base of his music is working and farming Black folk.As he enters fame, Handy remains interesting, especially when he explains the way he had to battle swindling and racism when he became a music publisher. He's also pretty adamant about demanding respect for African American entertainers and for song writers and composers as well.He's a good, friendly and often humorous writer throughout.Handy never claims to have invented Blues, but to have heard it second or third hand from folk sources in Mississippi and Memphis. His claim to fame was to have integrated folk bluses ideas into written compositions. Seeking to present himself as an innovator more than he actually was, he fails to mention that some of his early Blues, like the Memphis Blues were not actually Blues, but ragtime pieces with the title Blues appended to take advantage of the popularity the Blues was gathering among dancers and buyers of sheet music.In the 1930s, Handy was quite willing to accept without protest media claims that he invented the Blues and was one of the early innovators of Jazz. This was not to Handy's credit, particularly since although his Memphis band was one of the great ragtime bands and played many of Handy's compositions well, Handy as a bandleader, a composer, or as a musican was never known for Jazz, although he appreciated it.WhenIn the 1930s Jelly Roll Morton and others contested Handy's claims as the originator of Blues and Jazz. Morton pointed on that in the early 1900s, Handy had told Morton that it was impossible for a band to play the blues. This was at a time when Morton and other New Orleans musicians were leading Jazz bands that played the blues and. Indeed, Morton and the Jazz players had been preceded by pre-Jazz bands in New Orleans that played great Blues.While Handy does confront discrimination he faced as an African American in the South, his final chapter a paen to Ascap, stains his reputation and record. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers is a performing rights organization which licenses and collects royalties for performance of its members, composers and song writers. In the 1930s and early 1940s ASCAP demanded royalties from the recording industry, and especially from music venues and radio for music in general. However at the time ASCAP was notorious for its discrimination against African Americans composers who sought to join the organization while it maintained a few well-known African American members like Handy. For the few African Americans who were able to fight their way into ASCAP, royalties were distributed not based on the sales of music written by each composer, but an evaluation of the "value" of different forms of music. This evaluation out Jazz, Blues, and other African American music at almost no value, while white Broadway composers and classical compositions received huge sums.Black composers and song writers, led by Jelly Roll Morton protested this. Morton wrote not only many pieces that became standards for early Jazz, but several pieces that became among the most recorded songs of the Swing Era, especially "The King Porter Stomp" which was the theme song for Benny Goodman. Royalties on this music was probably worth hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. Yet, after a long struggle involving lawyers and appeals to the Justice department, when Morton fought his way into ASCAP, he was awarded less than 200 dollars per year for his compositions. Congress later investiged ASCAP and exposed ASCAP's discrimination against Black composers and song writers. The investigation and a series of court rulings forced ASCAP to change these practices.However, this came long after Handy wrote his concluding chapter celebrating ASCAP. He makes no note that the organization is openly discriminating against allowing Blacks other than a few well known tokens like himself to join. He makes no note that ASCAP collects millions from the compositions of African Americans, but paid them a pittance. He talks about ASCAP like it was the greatest invention since The Blues
