My first reaction to his little book was disappointment - I felt one page of substance for a healthy pay cheque return. All this changed to bliss after I personally shucked my own oysters, sat down with my champage and ate in style. I have never enjoyed oysters so much. Thank you Mireille.

Very short book. Everything you might want to know about oysters in Paris and Oyster culture. It drags a bit here and there but worth it. Good simple oystercrecipes at the end.

What a pleasant shock to discover that there were more than a couple of species of oysters and many ways to eat them. I took the book with me to my local restaurant that serves more than one species of oyster and enjoyed experimenting with the options of species and sauces. I shall take the book with me on my next trip to France!

Sent this book to friends in Washington state who are farming oysters...they loved it....!

Good book. Liked the questions and information.

This book did not meet my expectations. I bought it for my 6th grade son, and the book seemed geared towards much younger children even though it was advertised for kids grades 5-8.

My daughter, age 9, already knew a lot about Asperger's Syndrome, so introducing her to it wasn't an issue. She enjoys working in the workbook with me. Throughout the workbook, the child focuses on strengths and weaknesses, what the child can do and what they may need help with, etc. The child builds goals and plans for certain situations. We have not made it all the way through, some of the things are to make a homework schedule, etc., and we bought the book over the summer, so we are waiting for school to start before completing it. I really like that it helps me to be involved in her planning and tasks and gives us time to talk about things in a structured way, instead of her just venting about her problems. We are talking and working in a more productive way now, and hopefully as she works toward some of her goals she will see the benefits. My daughter is very high functioning, but I believe that it would be helpful to a wide range of children.

This excellent book is clear, well thought out,and easy to use. Those challenged by AS are presented with opportunities for self exploration and an understanding of what AS is and how it might be effecting their lives. They are encouraged, validated, and this interactive workbook helps THEM come out with solutions!!! As a parent I can't recommend this book enough! I can see it being adapted for use with many ages.

This is a wonderful workbook in which adolescents with AS can explore and embrace their own unique needs. The worksheets and concepts are very clear and pave the way for the adolescent with AS to gain critical insight into themselves and then problem solve, and plan accordingly. I HIGHLY recommend this book. The concepts and strategies can be easily adapted for use with all ages.

This is an Awesome workbook for Parent's and pre-teens. My son is almost 12 and it really helped us work thru some of the pre-teen issues that come up.

This is an inspirational story about a family that I knew when I was growing up in New York state. Jeff was a friend of mine and was full of love and joy. He was one of the most happy people that I have ever met even though he was born with severe challenges. This book chronicles my friends life, his parents struggles and joys, and the family's incredibly strong faith as they Journey with Jeff through his special life. The book is written specifically for inspiration for caregivers of people with special needs, but the story is inspirational for all people. This is one of those books that you keep after you've finished reading and turn to it when life throws you a curveball.

We've become a culture obsessed by reality TV and perhaps have sacrificed some realities of the heart. When you read Journey with Jeff, those heart realities suddenly become very real. With humor, insight, pathos and joy, a mother speaks of what at one time was unspeakable. By the time you finish reading this journey, you'll pause to marvel how those we seek to help, do so much more to actually help us. The realities of raising a child with developmental disabilities, blaming neither fate, nor circumstances, nor God, reveals the heart of love in parenting but even more important, reveals the heart of love within their son. Their journey speaks to the affirming hope all parents can discover despite the variety of challenges at their door. It's a journey and story of faith whereby a bitter reality becomes a better reality. Turn off the tube and get the book. It's good for the heart!

My friends in Rochester sent me this book after reading about it in their local Sunday paper. We are raising a 2-1/2, very spirited and loving son with DS and, although it's frustrating at times with the extra time needed for various therapies, dr. appts., etc., the joy he brings our lives far outweighs any of those frustrating moments. My friends thought they were sending me a book that would just be an enjoyable read. What they - and I - didn't realize is the impact it would have on my heart! The author tells it like it is and doesn't sugarcoat anything: her sense of loss after learning that Jeff had DS. The anger she felt with people who treated Jeff like a "non-person" ....and the love and appreciation for those who loved him as much as she did. Even the frustration she sometimes felt with the doctors and Jeff's limited abilities. And ALWAYS the joy and faith she had in the Lord and His never failing ability to confirm that He was in control. No matter how difficult things were, she always praised and thanked the Lord for confirmation that Jeff was serving a very important purpose on this Earth: to spread unconditional love to everyone he met. The book is easy to read yet has the ability to profoundly impact your life. Personally, it has helped me realize that I have spent the last 2-1/2 years believing that my son would be the "exception". And he very well may be; no one knows God's plans for our lives. But Sybil's book has helped me "ground" me in more realistic goals for his future and prepare me in case he isn't the exception. She is openly honest about the difficulties of raising a child with special needs and for that I am very grateful. I can only say "Thank you!" to Sybil for being so honest and open and for sharing her heart. I feel like I know her just by reading her story. The book is a "must read" for anyone with a young special needs child, especially if they haven't had much contact with other parents or support groups.

The author begins this book by describing the days before she knew her very young son "needed to be seen by a specialist" and then brings you through her personal experiences of caring and advocating for her child though out his all too short life. Journey with Jeff is a book that gives the reader an intimate look at the life of a beautiful and challenging person with developmental disabilities. It is very well written and it will move you. It is the perfect book for anyone who is, or expects to be, a parent or a caregiver of people. It is a fascinating look at human nature, as the reader can begin to understand the human experience through the interactions with Jeff by the many different people who touched Jeff's life in so many ways; more often than not positive and a few not so positive. Mostly this book will inspire the reader by witnessing this family's strength, persistence and faith in God, as they helped Jeff make his contributions to this world and live his life. Each chapter will give the reader a new insight into what life was like as Jeff and his family struggled with the many challenges they faced including, living with a serous seizure condition and the many resulting injuries, the efforts to learn the many skills and activities that most of us take for granted, the heart breaking good-byes when Jeff stayed in the hospital or moved to a special school or home to help him grow and, most gratifying, the many feelings of joy and jubilation when Jeff achieved a milestone. As a person who has worked in the human services field for many years (decades), I whole-heartedly recommend that everyone read this book. If you do, I know that you will be a better and more enlightened person for it.

The authors wrote in the Introduction to this 2003 first edition, "this book's goal is to give you a taste of Catholicism. It's not a catechism or religion textbook but a casual, down-to-earth introduction for non-Catholics and a reintroduction for Catholics. It gives common-sense explanations about what Catholics believe and do in plain English, with just enough why and how thrown in for it to make solid sense... We don't cover everything about Catholicism, but we do discuss the basic stuff so that the next time you're invited to a Catholic wedding, Baptism, funeral, Confirmation, or First Communion, you won't be totally confused." (Pg. 1)They point out, "The practice of attending what's called the 'Vigil Mass,' the Saturday evening Mass, wasn't universally allowed until 1983. The rationale for this relatively new practice is that in the Jewish tradition AFTER SUNDOWN means the next calendar day, so Mass celebrated after sundown on Saturday evening can count for a Sunday obligation." (Pg. 11)They explain, "In the eyes of the Catholic Church, any Baptism that uses water and the invocation of the Holy Trinity as well as the intention to do what the Church does, that is, 'I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,' is a valid sacrament. So Catholicism regards Episcopalian, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, United Church of Christ, Assembly of God, Church of the Nazarene, Church of the Brethren, Amish, Church of God, Disciples of Christ, Adventist, and Evangelical Baptisms to be valid. And if a follower of one of these Christian churches wants to become Catholic, he doesn't have to be re-baptized. That said, Catholicism doubts the baptisms in the following faith communities to be a valid sacrament: Christian Scientists, Quakers, Salvation Army, Jehovah Witnesses, Unitarians, and Mormons... The reason merely has to do with what Catholicism considers to be a valid sacrament." (Pg. 94)They observe, "A leader can retire from the active ministry or be forced to leave if he misbehaves, but no deacon, priest, or bishop can ever have his holy Orders taken away from him. A defrocked or laicized cleric can't wear clerical garb, and he can't licitly practice his ordained ministry. Being defrocked is involuntary and is imposed as a punishment for committing crime or scandal. Laicization, however, is at the request of the cleric who has not done anything immoral but wishes to be relieved of his obligations of celibacy and no longer wants to celebrate his sacred ministry." (Pg. 122-123)They admit, "By the way, no one knows the exact day of Jesus' birth... No one has found any Roman record of his exact day of birth, despite the census of Caesar Augustus (Luke 2:1-5). So how did the Church come up with December 25 as the birthday of Jesus? Some have claimed it was an attempt to coincide a Christian feast with an established pagan festival, the day of the conquering sun." (Pg. 156-157)They state, "Although tithing, giving 10 percent of your income to the parish, is mentioned in the Bible... it isn't mandatory in the Catholic Church. Most Catholics are encouraged to donate at least 5 percent of their income to the parish and 5 percent to their favorite charities. Statistically, though, Catholics are notoriously the lowest givers of all Christians, dedicating 1 percent of their incomes to the Church Mainline Protestants give 2 percent, and Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians give 5 to 10 percent." (Pg. 182)This book is literally packed with information, and is perhaps most helpful for those unfamiliar with the Catholic Church and its culture (e.g., non-Catholics, but also recent converts).

Item as described. Purchased secondhand. So far it's been extremely informative. I've just started an RCIA class or journey as I'd prefer to call it. This book lays out the most asked questions and corrects so many peoples misconception of Catholicism. Whether you are Catholic or interested or just need to educate yourself before you try and have a conversation with someone of the Catholic faith...this is a great find and an easy read. I told my ex that he should really educate himself before slamming my beliefs. He strongly believes that I'm not a Christian because he grew up being told that Catholics aren't Christians. I told him he needed to shut his mouth until he educated himself. Christianity has been around for a very long time and it didn't start with Southern Baptists. I told him to never bring up religious conversation with me again unless he did his research. Anyway, this book is a great guide and wonderful intro to anyone whether they are new to the information or grew up in the Catholic Church.

The book I bought was identified as the 2003 edition. Subsequent to purchasing the book I found out that the latest edition is 2012. When I ordered the book, I thought it was the latest edition--which is the one I wanted. Although it was my mistake, when the bookseller learned that I was disappointed with my purchase they unilaterally refunded to me both the purchase price of the book I received AND the shipping cost. I was truly amazed at their graciousness. You don't find this kind of customer service often. I will not hesitate to purchase from these folks in the future. They really care about their customers' satisfaction.GREAT JOB!!!!

After purchasing this book for obscure information, I quickly discovered this book is a hidden gem of understanding. For the Catholic, it provides what the person never received from their catechism. For the non-Catholic, they learn the truth about Catholicism and the fact there are more than one Catholic type.The style of writing provides and easy read for the user. The downside to this is the lack of depth that I was looking for. This is not a negative for the vast majority that would read this. It will definitely make one think more positively about this religion.If you had a question this book should have the answer.

I bought this before I entered the Church. It was a wonderful introduction into Catholicism. It de3finitely debunked many'myths' that have been espoused for years about the Catholic church.I would recommend this not only for RCIA hopefuls but also for those that want to "revive" their faith in the Catholic Church and CHristianity as whole

This covers the basics, obviously for beginners. It may not go that deep with how it covers certain practices and theology, but it explains this expansive and historic faith in good detail. I've heard that the practice of the rosary is better covered in the new edition likely does a better job of that. For more inspirational work, take a look at Father Baron's DVDs and books.

A medical history page turner plus a review of the interwining of technology and ethics. I was a medical student when MCV's kidney transplant pioneer David Hume tragically flew his plane into the mountainside. And I was still in Richmond when Dick Lower was doing heart transplants. I laughed out loud reading the description of definition-of-death plaintiff attorney Doug Wilder as verbose and ambitious. He was both, all the way to the Governor's mansion. These details and the rightly deserved disdain of Barnard made this book alive on a personal, professional, and historical level. Well done.

I am a heart transplant survivor. I absolutely loved reading about the early days of this incredible medical miracle called organ transplants. Very well written and accessible even for those us who don't understand medical jargon.

Many of us remember the news of the first heart transplant, done, of all places, in South Africa. But only those on the inside knew that several physicians were on the brink of reaching this medical mile stone. Donald McRae describes four physicians working diligently toward the first human heart transplant. The efforts, creativity, egos and motivations of these doctors lay the background to this fascinating medical story. It reads like a medical research timeline, interwoven with facts and factoids about the major players involved. The descriptions of the doctors' various situations will surely appeal to a wide audience -- interesting to medical types as well as lay people. I was impressed by the degree of research and referencing of this book -- without giving it the flavor of an academic publication. I could not put the book down.

"Every second counts" is a good story about the medical pioneers who invented heart surgery procedures and devices that are commonplace today. Most telling, is the fight that the earliest practitioners had to undergo to get the US laws that defined when death occurs changed. I was a fifth year medical student and may be biased as I was there at the time but this is the right stuff of medicine. Pioneers such as Barnard,Shumway,Lillihei live again in the tense atmosphere of stopping a heart from beating for what seems like an eternity and then restarting it again.It is accurate down to the fine minutia in the animal lab next to the morgue at the medical school of the University of Cape Town.A must read!!

My four year old enjoys the Zoe's Rescue Zoo series. That said, I found this one problematic. We haven't finished the book yet (and yes I will still finish the book with her) but twice there have been scenes where the main character enters the leopard enclosure containing not just the cub, but his full grown, carnivorous mother. This is only somewhat problematic as A) I do not expect my child to have the opportunity to enter an enclosure and B) I had a discussion with her about why that behavoir was unsafe, but I do not like that being modeled in a kids book. Also, I haven't finished it yet so it's possible that it contributes to a plot point, but I don't know why the conversations with the cub couldn't have happened from outside.The plot from book to book is independent. I'd recommend skipping this one and moving on to #5.

Really sweet, my seven year old enjoyed it and we purchased a snow leopard stuffed animal to go with it as a gift. Snow leopards are her favorite!
